Lady Pirates lose at Kamiah
For the second time this season the Prairie Lady Pirates lost to Kamiah by a score of 30-50. The game was played at Kamiah Tuesday, Jan. 22.Callie Mader goes for a shot against Kamiah. At right is Bailey Nygaard of Kamiah, daughter of PHS principal Carrie Nygaard.
With the win Kamiah clinched the #1 seed into District and will get a first round BYE while Prairie will be the #3 seed and will play Genesee at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31 at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston.
Kamiah jumped out to a 0-8 lead on Prairie as shots just wouldn’t fall for the Pirates. Callie Mader finally broke through for Prairie with a basket at the 3:41 mark. Kayla Schumacher and Tanna Schlader would each add a basket but Prairie ended the first quarter down 6-13  after hitting just 3 of 13 attempts.
Schumacher was the only one to make a basket in the second quarter, scoring 6 of Prairie’s 7 points as Kamiah upped their lead to 13-26 by halftime.
Keely Schmidt scored Prairie’s first six points of the second half but Prairie wound up trailing by 20 at 22-42 by the end of the third quarter.
The Kubs pushed the lead to 24-48 midway through the final period before Prairie closed with a 6-2 run to cut the final margin to 20.
Kayla Schumacher scored 11 points to lead Prairie in scoring with Schmidt scoring 7. Mader and Brooke Schumacher added 4 points each while Schlader scored 2 and Shelby VonBargen and Leah Holthaus scored 1 each.
Kamiah’s size and defensive play just stymied the Pirates who seemed like they were playing the Kubs better than the first time but the score ended up the same.
Rebounding was close at 37-40 with Schlader grabbing 16 rebounds for Prairie.
Schlader, Schmidt and Brooke Schumacher had 3 steals each and Mader had 3 assists.
Prairie was 13 for 48 from the field, 27%, and 4 for 13 at the line, 31%. Kamiah was 20 for 58 from the field, 34%, and 8 for 12 at the line, 67%.
With the loss Prairie ends their regular season at 15-5 overall and 8-4 in league play.
The JV team closed their season with a 49-11 rout of the Kubs.
After Kamiah tied the score at 2-2, Prairie reeled off 20 straight points to take control of the game. Leah Holthaus connected on a pair of 3-pointers and had 8 first quarter points while Hailey Danly and Sky Wilson each scored 3 points.
Prairie led 16-2 at the end of the quarter and 26-4 at the half.
Sarah Seubert had 4 of Prairie’s 10 second quarter points.
In the third quarter Prairie shut out the Kubs 18-0 to take a 44-4 lead into the final period. Danly scored 6 in the period while Wilson scored 5 and Holthaus added another 3-pointer.
Kamiah lost a player in the quarter when Wilson when hit from behind on a breakaway and the referee called an intentional flagrant foul which resulted in an ejection. A second player fouled out in the fourth quarter and since Kamiah had just 6 players suited up for the game, they played the final 4:49 with just 4 players.
Holthaus wound up with 11 points to lead the scoring while Danly scored 9 and Wilson 8. Talyss Lustig scored 5 points while Beka Bruner and Seubert scored 4 each. Kellie Heitman, Ali Hoene, Hannah Ross and Abbie Uhlenkott each scored 2.

Lady Pirates open against Genesee
District Tournament action starts this week for both the Prairie Lady Pirates and the Summit Lady Patriots at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston.
Prairie gets into action in the final game Thursday, Jan. 31 against #6 seeded Genesee at approximately 8 p.m. Early in the day C.V. will play Troy in the 4 vs. 5 game and Lapwai will play Potlatch in the 2 vs. 7 game. Kamiah has a bye as the #1 seed.
Action continues on Saturday with the Lapwai-Potlatch loser facing the Prairie-Genesee loser at 2 p.m. Kamiah will play the C.V.-Troy winner at 6 p.m. and the other winner’s bracket game will follow at 7:30 p.m. Winners of Saturday’s winner’s bracket games will advance to the championship game and both will qualify for State.
There will be two loser-out games on Monday Feb. 4 with the first at 6 p.m. and the other at 7:30 p.m.
Monday’s winners will play Friday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 with the winner of that game to play either Wallace or Lakeside on Saturday, Feb. 9 at St. Maries.
The championship game will be play at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7.
Summit actually started play on Tuesday against Nezperce and will play Deary at 7:30 p.m. Friday if they won that game and if they lost they will play on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against the loser of the game between Kendrick and the Highland-Timberline winner.
The tournament continues on Thursday, Feb. 7 with the championship game at 5 p.m. and a loser-out game between Saturday’s two winners at 6:30 p.m.
On Friday the championship game loser will play the other Thursday survivor for second place with that team to play Saturday, Feb. 9 in a state play-in game tentatively set for Grangeville at 1 p.m.
