Summit never lead in the game against Nezperce but they were never very far behind either as they were able to keep it close in a defensive battle.Abi Chmelik battles for the ball in a big scrum on the floor during Summit’s game with Nezperce at District.
Summit was held scoreless for most of the first quarter but Nezperce was only able to build a 0-5 lead. Rachael Frei finally put Summit on the scoreboard when she hit a 3-pointer with 52 seconds left in the period that cut the lead to 3-5.A
Frei then hit another perimeter shot to open the second quarter scoring that tied the game at 5-5.
A putback by Sarah Chmelik and another basket by Frei each tied the score again at 7 and at 9 but Nezperce then closed out the half with a 0-5 run to take a 9-14 lead at the break.
The third quarter was exceptionally offensive challenged as only 3 total points were scored. Abi Chmelik scored a free throw t the 5:58 mark and Nezperce got a basket at the 3:20 mark and that was it for the quarter as Nezperce took a 10-16 lead into the final period.
Things finally broke loose a bit offensively in the fourth quarter as Summit was able to double their score but Nezperce scored 8 themselves to hold off the Patriots.
The closest the Patriots were able to get was 18-21 after Jolene Chmelik drained a 3-pointer with 1:17 left. Nezperce answered though with 3 straight free throws before Jolene closed out the game’s scoring with a basket in the final seconds that cut the margin to 4.
