Knowledge Bowl team at Northwest Science Bowl
On Friday, February 1st the Prairie High School Knowledge Bowl team departed for Spokane.  They would compete in the Inland Northwest Science Bowl along with 38 other team at Whitworth College. The winning team was to win an all-expense trip to Washington D.C. to compete in the National Science Bowl.
The Prairie High School team consisted of Claire Whitley, Juraj Crnko, Joseph Halligan, Ashley Cannon, Stellina Laurino and Amanda Dinning.  We had a few ill team members that week who thought it was best to stay home – Chris Hoene and Max Patermann, and they were sorely missed. Normally, our team has 12-18 members, but many were not able to attend due to Girls’ District Basketball tournaments and the final home basketball game for the Prairie Boys.
Prairie was one of just a few small schools in the contest, and competed against some huge Spokane and North Idaho schools and Charter school teams.  Almost all of the teams we played against made it to the finals Saturday afternoon.  Lewis and Clark High School was our first opponent and they ended up 9th, but we only lost our match with them by a few points. Then we played Pullman 2, CDA Charter school team1 &the CDA Charter 2 and did not fare so well.  We were a little weary when we went up against Highland (Craigmont) and finally Lakeland 1.  We did defeat Lakeland, but only after we successfully challenged the final scoring.  Out of all of these teams – CDA Charter 1 placed 2nd, Pullman 2 – 5th and CDA Charter 2 – 6th, and Lewis and Clark High School – in the top 16.The only team we defeated – Lakeland 1 – ended up 9th overall.  I was very proud of our Prairie students as they did their very best against schools with team members who specialized in Physics, Biology, Advanced Math and other Math and Science related subjects.  The winning team, Pullman 1, has won 11 of the last 12 competitions.  One thing our team wanted to request so we are more competitive at this event in the future, is to have more challenging classes offered, such as Advanced Calculus and Physics.
The High School Knowledge Bowl Team participates in monthly meets almost every month of the school year.  We compete against Nezperce, Timberline, Kamiah, Clearwater Valley, Orofino, Kamiah and Grangeville.  Usually about 20-28 teams from these schools participate.  Prairie does a great job at these meets and we have been 2ndplace several times.  We usually have one of the top 5 teams at each meet.  At our monthly meets, questions are on many topics – Arts, Literature, Geography, History and Current Events, as well as Math and Science and Pop Culture.
Our next High School Knowledge Bowl meet is here in the Prairie High School Cafeteria on Monday, March 11th at 6:30 p.m.  We are expecting about 150 students from area schools.  We are always in need of table judges to help note if teams have the right answers.  The announcer tells the answer and you just need to hold up a sign if your team gets it right.  Contact Mrs. Karel at Prairie High School if you would like to help 962-3901 or email her at karel@sd242.k12.id.us
