Lady Pirates split games
The Prairie Lady Pirates split a pair of softball games this past week, winning a non-league game at Orofino then losing a league game to Genesee at Lewiston.
At Orofino
After a slow start the Prairie Lady Pirates scored 8 runs in the middle 3 innings and rolled to a 10-2 win at Orofino Tuesday, March 19.Ashley Cannon takes a cut in the Orofino game.
Prairie was held to just 1 hit and 2 baserunners in the first 2 innings and Orofino took a 0-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning
In the third Sky Wilson doubled to left and Hailey Danly walked. Tanna Schlader singled but Wilson was thrown out at the plate allowing Danly and Schlader to move up to third and second. Taylor Nuxoll then singled up the middle to score both runners and give Prairie the lead.
Two walks and a single enabled Orofino to tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third but Prairie came up with 3 in the fourth to take the lead for good.
Leah Holthaus led off with a walk. Kendall Schumacher then flared a single over shortstop that dropped in and the left fielder collided with the shortstop on the play with Holthaus and Schumacher able to move up a base each. Orofino’s shortstop had to leave the game with an injury. Ashley Cannon then hit a ball right to the replacement shortstop who made an error allowing Holthaus to score and Cannon to reach base. After 2 outs Danly doubled to right center to score both Schumacher and Cannon to make it 5-2.
Prairie added 3 more runs in the fifth with 5 singles and a walk. Mackenzie Rieman led off with a single. After an out, Schumacher flared another ball almost to the same spot as her previous hit for another single. Cannon then flared a single over third to load the bases. Kelsey Tidwell worked a walk to bring in a run. Wilson singled to left to score another run. After a second out, Schlader flared a single over short to score Cannon and make it 8-2.
After giving up 2 runs and 3 hits in the first 3 innings, Holthaus shut out Orofino the rest of the way with only 1 baserunner getting as far as third base.  The defense helped her out as Schumacher had an unassisted double play in the fifth where she caught a popup to first on a hit and run play and beat the runner to the bag for the second out. Holthaus then helped her own cause out when she caught a comebacker line drive in the seven and tossed over to Rieman at third to double off the runner for a game ending double play.
Prairie added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Tidwell led off with a single up the middle and Wilson walked. Danly doubled to center to score Tidwell and Wilson scored on an infield single by Schlader.
Prairie pounded out 15 hits in the game as Schlader and Schumacher each had 3 singles. Danly had 2 doubles and 3 RBI. Wilson had a double and a single. Rieman had 2 singles and Nuxoll, Cannon and Tidwell each had a single.
Holthaus gave up 6 hits and 2 runs with 5 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Vs Genesee
The Prairie Lady Pirates couldn’t muster any offense after the second inning and fell to Genesee 2-9 in a White Pine League game played at Lewiston Friday, March 22.
Kenzie Rieman catches a popup at third base in the Genesee game.It was a cold, miserable day that saw several snow flurries during the game as Genesee established themselves as the team to beat this year as they beat both Troy and Prairie during the week.
Prairie started well as Sky Wilson led off the game with a walk, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored the game’s first run on a groundout by Tanna Schlader.
Later in the inning Taylor Nuxoll was hit by a pitch and Mackenzie Rieman walked but they were both left on base as the inning ended.
In the bottom of the first Leah Holthaus struck out the first two hitters but then ran into trouble with a double, 2 walks and a single but managed to limit the damage to just 1 run.
Prairie took back the lead in the second as Kendall Schumacher reached on a dropped popup to short. Ashley Cannon walked and Jessica Kaschmitter was put in for her as a pinchrunner. Then came a controversial play as Kelsey Tidwell hit a popup that appeared to be in foul territory when it clanked off the fielder’s glove. The umps called it fair though and Schumacher was forced out at third. Wilson followed with a looper into short center that scored Kaschmitter to make it 2-1. Prairie wound up leaving the bases loaded with no more runs scoring.
Genesee took the lead for good in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs on 2 singles and a double. They continued to add runs in each inning while Prairie’s offense was held to just 2 hits the rest of the way, a 2-out double in the third by Schumacher and a 2-out single by Wilson in the 6th.
In all Prairie wound up with just 3 hits in the game, 2 singles by Wilson and a double by Schumacher.
Holthaus meanwhile gave up 16 hits and 9 runs with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.
The loss drops Prairie to 1-1 in league play and 2-2 overall.
