Lady Pirates take second at District
The Prairie Lady Pirates took second place at District and will advance to the State Tournament Feb. 20-22 at Columbia High School in Nampa for the fourth straight year.
On Saturday, Feb. 8 they clinched a trip to state with a 58-44 win that was a lot closer than the final score indicates over Genesee. On Monday, Feb. 10, they fell behind by as many as 18 points and couldn’t climb out of that hole as they lost to Lapwai 44-51 in the district championship game.
Vs. Genesee
Genesee was looking at the third time being the charm against Prairie as they managed to hang with the Pirates until midway through the third quarter.
Although Genesee managed to hang close, they never led as Prairie jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Krystin Uhlenkott opened the scoring with a 3-pointer off an inbounds play but that wound up being about the only points Prairie would score from beyond 15 feet as they struggled from the perimeter.Kyndahl Ulmer looks determined to score in the Genesee game.
A free throw by Leah Holthaus and 2 free throws by Nicole Wemhoff made it 6-0 and a lay-up by Kayla Schumacher made it 8-0.
Prairie went on to lead 11-5 at the quarter break.
Schumacher added 6 points in the second quarter and Kyndahl Ulmer scored 4 as Prairie pushed the ball inside since the outside game wasn’t working. They led 23-12 with 2:53 left in the half but Genesee closed the half with a 0-7 run to pull within 4 at 23-19.
Schumacher opened the second half scoring but Genesee scored the next 4 points to pull within 2 at 24-23 with 5:35 left in the third quarter.
Prairie went to full court pressure which led to Schumacher scoring 2 free throws and then a basket off a steal to put Prairie up 29-23 but Genesee responded with a 3-point play that cut the lead down to 29-26.
Ulmer then stole an inbounds pass under Prairie’s basket and scored a lay-up. That kicked off a 10-2 run for Prairie that put them up by 11 late in the period.
Genesee was able to cut the lead down to 7 in the fourth quarter at 44-37 and pulled within 8 twice after that, the final time at 51-43 with 2:40 left with Prairrie using free throws to hold them off.
With 1:58 left Schumacher scored a lay-up to put the lead back to 10 then Prairie scored 5 more points from the line to make it 58-43 with 20 seconds left. Genesee scored the final point to make it 58-44.
Schumacher wound up with 24 points to lead the scoring with Wemhoff and Ulmer scoring 11 each. It was a season high for Wemhoff with 7 of her 11 points coming in the fourth quarter, 5 of those at the line.
Keely Schmidt scored 5, Uhlenkott 3 and Holthaus 1.

Prairie couldn’t get any closer than 9 the rest of the quarter as they traded scores with Lapwai to finish the quarter down 32-41.
Danly, who seemed to provide a spark coming off the bench, opened the fourth quarter scoring and after a Lapwai free throw Wilson scored a basket after a steal by Danly and another Lapwai turnover led to a free throw by Danly that pulled Prairie within 5 at 37-42 with 5:24 left.
