Summit girls win 2 of 3 at District
The Summit Lady Patriots won 2 of their first 3 games in the District Tournament at LCSC in Lewiston and are still alive for a possible trip to State. On Friday, Feb. 7 they beat Logos 31-17 to advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament. On Saturday, Feb. 8 they lost to Nezperce 21-37. Finally on Monday, Feb. 10 they came up big in the second half and eliminated Highland 54-30.
They will play Kendrick in a loser-out game Thursday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will play the District 1 champion at St. Maries at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 for a trip to State.
Vs. Logos
In a loser-out game against Logos, Summit shut out the Knights in the second quarter and went on to win 31-17.Megan Rehder splits a pair of Highland defenders and looks to score. Also shown from left are Rachael Frei, Ally Hale and Rachel Waters.
Summit jumped out to a 4-0 lead on a basket each by Megan Rehder and Rachael Frei but Logos answered with 5 straight to take their only lead of the game.
Frei connected from the corner to put Summit back on top with 5:33 left in the first quarter and Sarah Chmelik turned a steal into a lay-up.
Logos cut the lead to 1 twice at 8-7 and 10-9 but a 3-pointer by Frei to end the first quarter put Summit up by 5 and Logos never got any closer than 6 the rest of the way.
The second quarter was an exercise in futility on both sides as Logos went 0 for 9 from the field and 0-2 at the line.
Summit wasn’t much better but managed to score a pair of baskets and push their lead to 17-9 at the half. Frei and Megan Seubert each scored a basket in the quarter for Summit.
Logos continued to struggle to score in the second half with just 4 points each quarter. Summit didn’t light up the scoreboard themselves but managed to add to their lead by scoring 7 points each quarter.
Frei wound up with 13 points to lead the Patriots while Seubert and Rehder scored 7 each and Chmelik scored 4.
Summit controlled the boards 49-39 with Seubert grabbing 14 rebounds while Chmelik had 11 and Rehder 9.

Vs. Nezperce
In the district semifinal against Nezperce, Summit struggled to score and the result was much the same as the league game played between the two teams at Nezperce Jan. 28.
Summit scored first when Rehder hit a 3-pointer and Ally Hale added a free throw to make it 4-0 but Summit went 8 minutes before they would score again.
In the meantime Nezperce put up 11 straight to finish the first quarter and added 3 more to start the second and take a 4-14 lead.
Seubert finally broke the scoring drought with a basket but Summit then went another 4 plus minutes before scoring again as they trailed 8-22 at the half.
Summit was unable to gain any ground on Nezperce in the second half as the Indians’ Aleesa Arnzen seemed to score every time Summit looked like it might rally. Summit could get no closer than 12 points in the second half.
Seubert wound up as Summit’s leading scorer with 9 points with Rehder scoring 6 on a pair of 3-pointers. Chmelik scored 4 and Hale 2.
Rebounding was close at 32-31 with Chmelik grabbing 13 to lead the Patriots.
Chmelik also had 3 steals and Frei had 3 assists.

Vs. Highland
Summit got off to a slow start against Highland as they fell behind 2-9 to open the game.
Chmelik hit a free throw and added a basket to make it 5-9 at the end of the first period.
Sarah Chmelik leads a break in the Highland game and is about to score a lay-up. Also shown are Rachael Frei, 2, and Megan Rehder.Summit was still down 10-14 midway through the quarter when Rehder hit a 3-pointer and Chmelik followed with a basket to give Summit their first lead of the game with 1:44 left in the half.
Rehder added 2 more baskets as Summit took a 19-16 lead at the break.
Coaches Virgil Frei and Kevin Rehder should have recorded whatever they said at halftime because Summit came out firing in the second half. They scored more in the third quarter than they did the whole first half, breaking out of the scoring funk they had been in the last several games.
Rehder opened the second half with another 3-pointer then added another basket. Seubert and Hale each scored putbacks and Rehder hit another shot to give the Patriots a 30-21 lead.
Another basket by Hale, a 3-pointer by Frei and putbacks by Chmelik and Seubert closed out the quarter with Summit up 39-27.
Summit then dominated the fourth quarter 15-3 to close out Highland and advance in the tournament.
Rehder wound up with 17 points to lead the scoring with Chmelik scoring 16, Seubert 13, Hale 5 and Frei 3.
Summit dominated on the boards 59-34 with 4 of the 5 starters hitting double figures on the boards. Hale led the way with 16 while Rehder had 13, Chmelik 12 and Frei 10. The only reason Seubert didn’t join that group is she spent a lot of time on the bench with foul trouble but still wound up with 7 rebounds.
Rehder had 3 steals and Chmelik had 4 assists.
Summit was 23 for 62 from the field, 37%, and 5 for 15 at the line, 33%. Highland  was 11 for 56 from the field, 20%, and 3 for 9 at the line, 33%.
Summit is now 17-5 on the season.
