Summit boys earn State Berth
The Summit boys basketball team did it the hard way, but earned a trip to the State Tournament this week at Caldwell.
The easy way would have been to beat Kendrick in the district championship game Tuesday, Feb. 25, but the Tigers continued their upset run through the tournament by winning 53-61.
That put Summit into the second place game against league champion Deary on Wednesday, Feb. 26. They pulled out a 47-43 win over the Mustangs to advance to a state play-in game against Kootenai at St. Maries. There they earned a state trip with a 50-43 win.
Summit will play Rockland at 1:15 p.m. MST at Caldwell High School Thursday, March 6.
Vs. Kendrick
Kendrick was the fifth seed into the District Tournament at the LCSC Activity Center but jelled at the right time. There was a scramble for a loose ball in the Kendrick game. Summit started well taking an 8-5 lead on a 3-pointer by Tyler Krogh but Kendrick answered with a pair of 3-pointers by freshman Wyatt Hardin.
Michael Waters answered with a driving lay-up and then stole the ball in the final seconds and scored to give Summit a 12-11 lead at the quarter break.
Waters scored a putback to open the second quarter for a 3-point lead.
Later Josh Lustig hit a free throw to make it 15-13 but Kendrick then went on a 2-11 run that put them in control.
Waters hit a 3-pointer just before half that cut the deficit to 20-24.
Kendrick started the third quarter with a 3-12 run to take a 23-36 lead.
Summit fought back with a 9-0 run of their own sparked by a 3-pointer by Matt Schwartz. Patrick Chmelik added a free throw and capped the run with a 3-point play that pulled Summit back within 4 at 32-36.
Sophomore Braden Smith then hit a 3-pointer to put Kendrick up by 7 entering the fourth quarter.
Summit was able to get back within 4 after a 3-pointer by Thomas Schwartz with 6:55 left at 37-41. Kendrick then went on a 0-7 run and Summit never got any closer than 6 the rest of the way.
Waters led the Patriots in scoring with 20 points with Krogh adding 10, Lustig and Matt Schwartz 7 each, Chmelik 6 and Thomas Schwartz 3.
Smith had 28 and Hardin 20 for Kendrick.
Rebounding was very close with Kendrick holding a 41-42 edge. Waters and Lustig had 10 each to lead Summit.
Chmelik had 3 steals and Lustig had 3 assists.
Summit was 18 for 64 from the field, 28%, and 9 for 15 at the line, 60%. Kendrick was 21 for 50 from the field, 42%, and 13 for 16 at the line, 81%.

Vs. Deary
In the second place game against Deary, Summit was finally able to beat Deary after two losses to them during the regular season.
Summit took and early lead after Matt Schwartz and Waters each hit a 3-pointer for  an 8-4 lead. Deary responded though with a 6-0 run of their own to retake the lead Michael Waters drives toward the key in the Deary game at District. In the background is Matthew Schwartz.and led 10-12 at the first quarter break.
Summit trailed the whole second quarter but never by more than 5 points and were still within 2 at 18-20 at the half after a free throw by Lustig.
Summit came out strong in the third quarter and took their first lead since the 3:57 mark of the first quarter when Waters hit a 3 from the corner at the 6:25 mark to make it 22-21.
Deary briefly retook the lead at 21-23 but Matt Schwartz scored a basket and then 2 free throws as Summit took back the lead and were able to hold it throughout the rest of the third quarter.
Deary was able to pull within 1 but a 3 by Nathan Beckman and a free throw by Waters pushed it back to 5.
Summit led by as many as 8 at 35-27 before a Deary basket cut the lead to 6 at the end of the third quarter.
Deary opened the fourth quarter with 7 straight points to retake the lead at 35-36.
Consecutive lay-ups by Chmelik and Waters put Summit back on top.
Deary again rallied to tie the game at 40 with 2:12 left cut Lustig hit the first of a pair of free throws to put Summit back on top. 15 seconds later Lustig was fouled again and again made the first free throw. Waters rebounded the miss of the second one and put it back to give Summit a 44-40 lead.
A steal by Waters led to another Lustig free throw, this time he made the second of a double bonus. Matt Schwartz added a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left to give Summit a 3 possession lead at 47-40.
Deary hit a 3 to cut the final margin to 4 points.
Waters scored 24 to again lead Summit in scoring. Matt Schwartz added 12, Lustig 5, all on free throws, Beckman 4 and Chmelik 2.
Summit held a 35-30 rebounding edge led by Waters with 11. Chmelik and Lustig added 7 each.
Waters had 4 steals and 3 assists.
Summit was 15 for 45 from the field, 33%, and 12 for 21 at the line, 57%. Deary was 13 for 43 from the field, 30%, and 14 for 22 at the line, 64%.

Vs. Kootenai
Saturday, March 1 at St. Maries, Summit punched their ticket to their first state tournament since 2009.
Summit got off to a strong start as they led Kootenai 15-7 at the end of the first quarter. 
Their scoring pace slowed in the second quarter but Kootenai couldn’t take advantage as Summit still led by 8 at the half, 20-12.
Kootenai cut into the lead in the third quarter by outscoring Summit 9-12 but the Patriots still took a 29-24 lead into the fourth quarter.
Summit then managed to hold on in a high-scoring fourth quarter as they outscored Kootenai 21-19 for the win.
Matt Schwartz led the Patriots in scoring with 15 points with Water right behind with 14. Krogh and Chmelik scored 7 each while Lustig scored 5 and Stubbers 2.
Chemlik led the team in rebounds with 12 while Lustig added 10.
