2 earn state medals
Dally Ratcliff and Hunter McWilliams each earned a 6th place medal at the State Wrestling Meet held Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 1 at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.
Kellie Heitman and Nathan Gimmeson were each eliminated after 2 matches.
113 lbs.-Heitman lost by pin in 2:16 to Brody Smith of Oakley in the first round. In the first consolation round she lost by pin to Dallin Atkinson of Malad in 4:27.
120 lbs.-Gimmeson lost by pin in 39 seconds to Sebastian Salazar of Challis in the opening round. In the first consolation round he lost by pin to Cody Barrett of Marsing in 2:50.
126 lbs.-Ratcliff won his opening round match against Trent Gines of Wendell in 56 seconds. In the quarterfinals he lost to Kade Sessions of North Fremont by a 4-13 decision. In the second round of consolation he won by pin over Gunner Adams of Declo in 1:29. In the consolation quarterfinals he clinched a medal by pinning Cody Edwards of St. Maries in 2:20. It wasn’t without drama though as he fell behind 0-7 by the end of the 1 minute first period and 0-8 early in the second before scoring a takedown and collecting the pin. In the consolation semifinals he lost to Casey Burley of Salmon 0-8. In the 5th-6th match he lost 4-12 to Cody Svedin of Melba to get the 6th place medal.
152 lbs.-McWilliams won his opening match by pin at 1:59 over Isaac Riley of Melba. In the quarterfinals he faced #2 seeded Eric Eliason of Malad and lost by pin at 5:51. In the consolation bracket he faced Dillyn Deno of Soda Springs and took a 7-0 lead after two periods before winning by pin in the third period at the 3:18 mark of the match. In the consolation quarterfinals, with a medal in the balance, he had a touch match with Armando Jimenez of Wendell. McWilliams scored the initial takedown but got reversed and trailed 2-4 after one period. He scored a reversal and near fall in the second period to take a 7-5 lead in the final period. He was able to limit Jimenez to an escape point in the third period and hold on for a 7-6 decision. In the consolation semifinals he had another tough match against Zach Anderson of Ririe. McWilliams again scored the initial takedown but an escape made it 2-1 after the first period. McWilliams fell behind 2-4 in the second period but an escape, takedown and near fall gave him a 7-4 lead. A reversal cut it to 7-6 by the end of the third. He started the third with an escape but Anderson scored a takedown to tie the match, sending it to overtime. Anderson scored the overtime takedown to win 8-10. In the 5th-6th place match McWilliams faced Levi Mitton of Oakley and wound up losing 5-14 to earn the 6th place medal.
As a team Prairie finished tied for 23rd with Grangeville with 24 points. There were 35 teams competing. They were 8th among 1-A teams.
After trailing for the entire match, Dally Ratcliff stunned Cody Edwards of St. Maries, getting him cradled for a pin that clinched a state medal.
Hunter McWilliams couldn’t quite get the pin against Armando Jimenez of Wendell but the near fall points he got with this double arm bar helped him clinch a state medal.
Nathan Gimmeson got off to a good start in his second round match against Cody Barrett of Marsing, taking a 4-0 lead but Barrett wound up winning by pin.
Kellie Heitman tries to cinch up a cradle in this second round match but wound up getting eliminated by Dallin Atkison of Malad.
