Summit go 1-2 at State
Summit Academy may not have brought home any hardware for their play on the court but they did bring home more hardware than most schools with the Academic Trophy and the Sportsmanship Trophy.
On the court Summit won their opener against Rockland 56-40 on Thursday, March 6. On Friday, March 7 they played tough against Ambrose School of Meridian but faltered last for a 44-59 loss. In the third place game against Kendrick on Saturday, March 8 they came up short for the second time in a row against the Tigers and lost 37-45 to finish in what amounts to 5th place at State. All games were played at Caldwell High School in Caldwell.
Vs. Rockland
In their opener against District 5-6 champion Rockland, Summit got off to a good start as they took an 18-11 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Rockland outscored them 11-13 in the second but Summit still led 29-24 at the half.
Summit extended the lead in the third quarter to 40-32 and doubled that lead in the final period as they pulled away for a 16-point victory.
Michael Waters led the scoring with 22 points including a 6 for 6 performance at the free throw line.  He also had 12 rebounds and 5 assists.
Josh Lustig added 15 points and 7 rebounds while Matthew Schwartz scored 8, Dean Stubbers 6 and Tyler Krogh 5.
A big part of the win was a 19 for 27 performance at the free throw line.

Vs. Ambrose
In the semfinal game against Ambrose, Summit was able to keep it close until the 4:30 mark of the fourth quarter when Ambrose put together a 0-12 run to finally break the game open.Michael Waters appears to be using Dean Stubbers as a springboard for this shot against Ambrose.
Ambrose jumped out to a 4-12 lead on the Patriots behind 7 points from 6’7” sophomore Travis Yenor.
Summit though rallied back to tie the score at 12-12 with their own 8-0 run. Waters and Patrick Chmelik each scored 4 points in that run. Chmelik was also having some success guarding Yenor including blocking one of his shots.
Yenor scored to open the second quarter but Chmelik scored a basket and Waters a free throw to give Summit a 15-14 lead.
Ambrose answered with a 0-6 run and led 17-22 at the half.
In the third quarter Waters scored 6 and Matthew Schwartz 4 as Summit rallied back to tie the game at 29-29 with 1:44 left.
Yenor then hit a 3-pointer and a short bank shot to put Ambrose back on top by 5. Waters hit a basket at the buzzer to cut it to 31-34 at the end of 3 quarters.
With 5:55 left Waters scored a driving lay-up to cut the lead to 35-36. Ambrose responded with a free throw and a basket to lead by 4 but Stubbers scored a pair of free throws to make it 37-39 with 4:44 left.
Ambrose then hit a couple of 3-pointers to kick off the aforementioned 0-12 run and Summit never got any closer than 10 the rest of the way. 
Waters scored 15 to lead the Patriots in scoring with Matthew Schwartz scoring 9, Chmelik 8, Krogh 5, Stubbers 4 and Lustig 3.
Ambrose had a 36-43 rebounding edge with Waters grabbing 8 to lead Summit while Stubbers, Lustig and Chmelik had 7 each.
Yenor had 28 points and 17 rebounds for Ambrose.
Waters had 5 steals and 3 assists.
Summit was 19 for 56 from the field, 34%, and 5 for 16 at the line, 31%. Ambrose was 20 for 53 from the field, 38%, and 14 for 18 at the line, 78%.

Vs. Kendrick
Patrick Chmelik and Josh Lustig battle for a loose ball in the Kendrick game.Summit still had a shot at a state trophy if they could get past Kendrick in the third place game. Unfortunately Summit struggled to score against the Tigers and went down to defeat.
Kendrick took an 8-16 lead by the end of the first quarter and still led 13-20 after a very low-scoring second quarter.
Kendrick extended the lead to 19-32 after three quarters and although Summit was able to eat into the lead in the fourth they couldn’t close the deal.
Waters again led Summit in scoring with 16 points in his final game for the Patriots. Lustig added 10 points while Chmelik scored 4, Krogh 3 and Matthew and Thomas Schwartz 2 each. It was also Matthew Schwartz’ final game for Summit as he and Waters are the team’s lone seniors.
Kendrick held the rebounding edge 36-45. Lustig had 7 to lead the Patriots.
Waters had 4 steals and Matthew Schwartz had an assist.
Summit was 11 for 55 from the field, 20%, and 13 for 18 at the line, 72%. Kendrick was 13 for 44 from the field, 29%, and 15 for 21 at the line, 71%.
Summit ends their season with a 16-8 record.
