Lady Pirates sweep Kellogg
The Prairie Lady Pirates softball team got off to a good start with a doubleheader sweep of Kellogg Saturday, March 15 at Lewiston.
Prairie won by scores of 11-1 and 20-2 with both games shortened to 5 innings on the 10-run mercy rule.Leah Holthaus heads for second as Sky Wilson can be seen about to round third on Holthaus’ second game triple against Kellogg.
Leah Holthaus was sharp in the opener, tossing a no-hitter while allowing just 4 baserunners with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.
Things didn’t start well as the leadoff batter reached on an error but catcher Sky Wilson gunned her out trying to steal.
In the bottom of the first Prairie took advantage of 4 walks, a hit batsman and an error to score 4 runs without a hit.
Holthaus drew a 1-out walk to start the rally then Hailey Danly popped up to right but the fielder had the ball bounce out of her glove for an error. Walks to Kellie Heitman and Kylie Tidwell followed with Faith Uhlenkott then hit by a pitch and then Tasha Gimmeson walked. Despite all the walks there were no runs forced in as all 4 runs scored on wild pitches.
Prairie added 2 more runs in the second inning with 6 more walks and an error. The first 7 runners all reached base with the first two getting tagged out at the plate attempting to score on passed balls. Sky Wilson reached on an error by the pitcher and Holthaus also walked. Danly walked to load the bases and Heitman and Tidwell each walked to force in a run to make it 6-0.
After a pair of 1-2-3 innings, Kellogg finally got their second baserunner in the fourth on a walk. The next batter hit the ball back to Holthaus who unsuccessfully tried to get the runner at second. The batter would have been an easy out at first so we scored it a fielder’s choice. A passed ball moved the runners up and a run scored on another comebacker to Holthaus who this time took the out at first. A fly out to left and a strikeout got Holthaus out of the inning.
Prairie added another run in the bottom of the fourth on another 5 walks with another possible run getting thrown out at the plate. Uhlenkott wound up forcing home Danly on a bases loaded walk for the run.
In the bottom of the fifth Marina Evans finally broke up the double no-hitter with a double to left. Jessica Kaschmitter and Wilson walked to load the bases and Holthaus walked to force in a run. Danly then cleared the bases with a game ending 3-run double to right that gave Prairie an 11-1 win.
Evans and Danly each had a double for Prairie’s only hits. Danly had 3 RBI while Heitman, Tidwell and Uhlenkott each had 1 RBI.
Despite her control problems, Kellogg stuck with the same pitcher in the second game and Prairie jumped on her for 9 runs in the first inning.
Wilson led off by reaching on an error as the first baseman dropped the throw. Holthaus then doubled to center to score Wilson. Danly, Heitman and Tidwell each walked with Holthaus being forced in. After a pair of outs, Evans blooped a single to right that scored Danly and Heitman. Abbie Uhlenkott was hit by a pitch and Wilson walked to reload the bases. Holthaus then tripled to right center to bring in 3 more runs. Danly followed with a triple to the right field corner to score Holthaus and make it 9-0.
Marina Evans heads for second with a double as the players in the Prairie dugout watch the flight of the ball into the outfield.Holthaus continued as pitcher in the second game and got the first two outs before Kellogg finally got to her for a pair of hits, a single and a triple, that scored a run.
Prairie answered back with 4 runs in the second on 3 hits, 3 walks and a hit batsman.
Tidwell le off the inning with a single up the middle and reached second on a bad throw in from the outfield. Gimmeson reached on a 1-out walk and Tidwell  scored on Evans’ ground out to third. Abbie Uhlenkott was again hit by a pitch and Wilson walked to load the bases. Holthaus then singled up the middle for 2 more runs. Danly followed with a single that scored Wilson to make it 13-1.
Kellogg changed pitchers for the third inning and the new hurler didn’t fare much better as she walked 2, hit 2 and gave up a single and 3 more runs.
Faith Uhlenkott led off with a 4-pitch walk and moved to third on wild pitches. Evans singled to right to score Uhlenkott. Abbie Uhlenkott forced Evans at second and Prairie loaded the bases as Wilson was hit by a pitch and Holthaus walked. With two out both were replaced by courtesy runners Krista Hess and Sarah Seubert. Abbie Uhlenkott scored on a fielders choice by Danly and Heitman was hit by a pitch to force in Danly and make it 16-1.
In the fourth Prairie added 4 more runs with only 1 hit. Faith Uhlenkott and Gimmeson walked and Evans was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Abbie Uhlenkott singled to left to scored 2 runs. Wilson then dropped a flare into right center but Uhlenkott wound up getting forced at second as Evans went to third. Holthaus hit a grounder to third but the throw got away allowing both Evans and Hess, again running for Wilson, to score.
In the top of the fifth, with a 19 run lead, coach Jeff Martin subbed in his bench players at the plate with Darlene Gehring getting hit by a pitch and Lauren Alfrey drawing a walk but nobody scored.
In the bottom of the fifth Kellogg got to a tiring Holthaus for 3 straight singles to start the inning with a run scoring. With runners on first and second the next batter hit the ball to Abbie Uhlenkott at third who stepped on the bag for the force but couldn’t get the double play at first. Holthaus was able to strike out the next batter and forced the next one to pop up to short to end the game.
Holthaus gave up 7 hits and 2 runs with no walks and 6 strikeouts.
Holthaus also had what may have been her best day ever at the plate with a single, double and triple and 6 RBI. We can remember her having 3 hits before but they were all bunt hits.
Danly had a single and a triple and 3 RBI. Evans had 2 singles and 4 RBI. Abbie Uhlenkott had a single and 2 RBI and Tidwell had a single. Heitman had an RBI on  bases loaded hit by pitch.
Prairie is now 2-0 on the season.
