Override set at $350,000
A resolution was approved to seek a $350,000 override levy this year for the Cottonwood School District at the March meeting Monday, March 17.
This amount is down from last year’s $387,000. Some of the funds gained from the sale of the old Kindergarten building was used to reduce the levy amount. It was decided previously to try and spread that amount over 3 years.
Don Curry was approved as the junior high track assistant coach replacing Tabitha Roach. Taylor Heitman would also like to serve as a volunteer assistant for track and her request was approved by the board.
In the facilities report superintendent Rene’ Forsmann reported they have been having some water issues at the art room at the junior-senior high from snowpack on the new roof and rain seeping between the brick wall and the new annex. She reported Morris Arnzen will do the repair with insurance picking up about $6,100 of the cost, which should cover most of it.
Updates will be done at the district office over spring break with the classroom cabinet work to be done during the summer.
Mark and Jennifer Spears were present at the meeting with concerns about possible loss of the choir. They would like to see the school still support the competitions.
In her elementary principal report, Forsmann said parent-teacher conferences are set for March 26-27. No School on March 28 with school out for Spring Break through April 6. School resumes April 7.
Missoula Children’s Theatre is this week. The Elementary students will be bused to the high school for the 1 p.m. performance on Friday, March 21.
In her superintendent’s report Forsman said they have 20 or fewer students interested in band in grades 7-12. With that information they looked at options from within. They advertised for a K-12 music/instrumental person and had 2 applicants with music only endorsements. They were hoping for some with additional endorsements. They are working on a schedule to offer 7-12 music and 7-12 drama, adding a sociology course and giving the elementary a 1-period PE teacher for 7th period. This would make them increase a current part-time employee from 2/7 to 5/7.
On her report Carrie Nygaard gave a shout out to the girls and boys basketball teams and cheerleaders for their state championships and the sportsmanship award at the girls tournament. She also congratulated Garrett Crenshaw for taking 2nd at the regional spelling bee on March 8.
Senior projects are now being presented the first round was March 11 with further presentations set for April 8 and April 15.
Showcase night is set for March 26 from 3:30 to 7 during the parent-teacher conferences. Conferences will continue on March 27.
Driver’s Ed is set to begin April 30 with a parent meeting.
HOSA students were to help with the March 18 blood drive and are also holding a “pennies for cystic fibrosis” fundraiser March 24-27.
Prairie hosted Knowledge Bowl March 10.
FFA students will travel to state competition in Twin Falls on April 9-12.
The Mother-Daughter Tea is set for Sunday, April 13.
Chemistry night went well.
The meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m. Starting with the April 21 meeting the meeting time will go back to 7 p.m.
