Barn Quilt project started
In an effort to promote the agricultural heritage of Idaho County, provide education about the art and history of quilting and encourage economic development by promoting rural tourism a Barn Quilt project is ongoing in the county.
Annelle Urbahn of Grangeville said barn quilts are quite popular back east with people taking guided tours to check out all the local barns and the quilt patterns on them.  Nationwide it is estimated there are more than 3200 painted quilt blocks that decorate barns in more than 30 states.
This effort would also highlight the historical barns inside the county and later this spring  you will be able to pick up quilt trail maps with the locations, barn heritage and quilt square name for those barns already so decorated.
A “Corn & Beans” Quilt square will be placed on one of the barns at the Fairgrounds this spring along with 4 more new squares throughout the county.
Urbahn has a “Bear Paw” quilt pattern copied from her grandmother’s quilt on the Urbahn’s barn on Meadow Street in Grangeville.
If you’d like to become a part of Idaho County’s Quilt Trail, contact Urbahn at 983-2333 for more information.
Quilt squares can be 2 x 2, 4 x 4 or 8 x 8 foot sizes. Most are painted on plywood and then hung on the barn but some of them are actually painted right on the barn itself.
In most of the pictures she had, the quilt square is placed in the peak area on one of the ends.
The accompanying photo is a “Corn & Beans” quilt pattern similar to what will go up on the barn at the Fairgrounds.
