Lady Pirates beat Troy
In their final game before Spring Break the Prairie Lady Pirates jumped out to an early lead and held on to beat Troy 11-6 in a league game at Cottonwood Tuesday, March 25.Kylie Tidwell makes a catch in centerfield against Troy.
Troy had scouted Prairie at the Asotin Tournament and saw the trouble they had hitting a slow pitcher so they tried one in the first inning. The only problem was she couldn’t throw a strike, walking 7 of the first 8 batters she faced with just 2 called strikes.
Sky Wilson, Leah Holthaus, Hailey Danly, Kellie Heitman and Faith Uhlenkott all walked to start the game with just 3 strikes total among the 5 hitters.
Kylie Tidwell ran the count full before popping up with an infield fly being called. Natasha Gimmeson and Holli Uhlorn each walked on 4 pitches. Jessica Kaschmitter took a strike then hit a grounder that was mishandled for an error with 2 runs scoring.
At that point Troy’s coach changed pitchers, going to his regular starter, Brittany Hosley. Wilson greeted her with a 2 run double down the left field line that made it 8-0. Hosley then got out of the inning.
Troy got a run off Holthaus in the second on a leadoff homer over the left field fence.
Prairie got that run back in the bottom of the second when Faith Uhlenkott looped a single over shortstop. She stole second and scored on Gimmeson’s pop fly that fell into short right field for a hit..
Troy put a rally together in the fourth as Holthaus walked the leadoff hitter then gave up a single and 2 doubles that scored 3 runs. An error on what should have been the third out let another run score to cut the lead to 9-5.
In the bottom of the fourth Prairie managed to plate 2 runs without benefit of a hit. Heitman walked then was forced at second by Marina Evans, pinchhitting for Tidwell. Tidwell went back in to run. Gimmeson reached on an error and Uhlorn walked to load the bases. A passed ball allowed Tidwell to score and a wild pitch allowed Gimmeson to score to make it 11-5.
Troy loaded the bases with 2 outs in the fifth on 2 singles and an error but Holthaus induced a comebacker to get out of the inning.
In the sixth Troy came up with another run. A hit batsman and a single put runners on first and second. The next batter hit the ball to Danly at shortstop who tagged the runner coming off second and appeared to beat the runner coming from first to the bag but only the first out was called. A single followed to load the bases and a run then scored on a forceout at third where Abbie Uhlenkott field the grounder and tossed to Danly who was covering the bag. Another grounder to Danly ended the inning.
Prairie wound up with 4 hits with Wilson and Uhlorn each collecting a double while Gimmeson and Faith Uhlenkott each had a single.
Holthaus gave up 10 hits and 6 runs with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.
Prairie goes into Spring Break with a 7-0 record, 2-0 in league play.
