Lady Pirates take second at District
After 9 straight championship game appearances the Prairie Lady Pirates had to settle for third place at this year’s State Softball Championships held May 16-17 at Caldwell.
Prairie opened with a 1-8 loss to District 3 champion Horseshoe Bend. They then kept their season alive with a 14-0 win over Notus. On Saturday morning they met up with Horseshoe Bend again and were eliminated 0-10.
Opener vs. Horseshoe Bend
Horseshoe Bend was a very young squad last year when Prairie beat them 2-1 in an elimination game at State. This year they were all a year older and added some solid freshmen. Leah Holthaus stands at the plate against Horseshoe Bend at State. Photo by Kathy Seubert.
Coach Jeff Martin said they were the fastest team he has seen. They made very effective use of the bunt on offense.
Prairie meanwhile struggled offensive against the Mustangs pitcher, racking up just 6 hits and not scoring until the seventh inning.
Prairie had chances as Sky Wilson led off the game with a single but was caught stealing. Hailey Danly had a 2-out double and advanced to third on an error but was stranded there.
In the third Kellie Heitman led off with a walk and Wilson followed with a single but they were still on second and third when the inning ended.
In the seventh Jessica Kaschmitter led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, to third on a passed ball and scored on Wilson’s single to right for Prairie’s only run.
Pitcher Leah Holthaus held the Mustangs in check for the first 3 innings, allowing 1 unearned run in the second on 3 errors.
Horseshoe Bend got to her in the fourth though for 5 runs, again with errors costing the Pirates. 5 errors contributed mightily to the scoring as the Mustangs had just 1 hit.
The Mustangs added 2 runs in the 6th on a hit and another error.
In all Holthaus gave up just 6 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.
Prairie had 6 hits with Wilson collecting 3 singles and an RBI while Jessica Kaschmitter had 2 singles and Danly had a double.

Prairie took the lead in the top of the first as Leah Holthaus singled with 1 out and scored on Sarah Seubert’s double to left.
Prairie added 2 more in the second as Kaschmitter reached on an error as did Kellie Heitman. Both scored on Wilson’s double to center.
Prairie broke it open with a 4-run fourth inning. Wilson led off with a single and Holthaus followed be reaching on an error. Both scored on Danly’s double to left. Danly scored on Kylie Tidwell’s single and Tidwell came around to score when Kaschmitter’s reached on an error.
In the fifth Prairie put up 7 runs as Heitman led off with a double and Wilson reached on an error with Heitman scoring. Wilson eventually scored on a passed ball. Holthaus reached on an error and scored on Danly’s triple to center. Seubert singled home Danly and Seubert scoring on Abbie Uhlenkott’s triple to right center. Natasha Gimmeson doubled in Uhlenkott and Gimmeson eventually scored on a passed ball.
That gave Prairie a 10-run rule win in 5 innings.
The Pirates had 11 hits in the game led by Danly with a double and triple. Seubert and Wilson each had a single and double. Holthaus had 2 singles. Uhlenkott had a triple. Heitman and Gimmeson each had a double.

Saturday vs Horseshoe Bend
Saturday’s game against Horseshoe Bend was much like the game the day before as the Mustangs pulled away late for the win.
Horseshoe Bend scored 3 in the first on 4 hits but Holthaus shut them down in the second and third innings. They broke it open in the fourth with 5 runs and scored 2 in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the 10-run rule.
Prairie meanwhile struggled even more offensively the second time around against the Mustangs sophomore pitcher. They tallied just 4 hits. Two by Wilson and a single each by Seubert and Heitman.
Horseshoe Bend rolled from that win through Genesee twice in a row to claim the first championship for a southern Idaho team in the 1-A fastpitch tournament since Council in the very first one in 2002.
Prairie winds up their season with an 18-9 record.
