5 vie for 2015 Fair Royalty
There are 5 young ladies this year vying to be a part of the 2015 Idaho County Fair Royalty.
They are Laina Sonnen of Cottonwood, Madison Ulmer of Kooskia, Brooke Eades of Kamiah and Jolene Chmelik and Lauren Goldman of Grangeville.
The young ladies will be judged at the Royalty Luncheon, which is set for Wednesday, July 30 at the Nazarene Church in Grangeville, 515 W. North 2nd St. The 2015 Royalty will be crowned Friday evening during the Idaho County Fair.
Laina Sonnen
Laina Marie Sonnen is the 15 year old daughter of Melvin and Joyce Sonnen of Cottonwood.
She will be a sophomore at Prairie High School.
Youth organizations she’s involved with are 4-H, Drama Camp, Vacation Bible School and Church youth group.
Past fair involvement includes sheep, rabbit, backpack and hiking, sewing, cast ceramics and Citizen Washington Focus 4-H projects as well as open class projects.
She enjoys taking pictures, hunting and fishing.
Plans after high school include getting a higher education, getting married and having a family and helping others understand the importance of education.
Three life goals are making a good impact on Idaho County, helping someone else reach their goals and becoming a better human being.
She feels kindness is her strongest personal quality because she is able to make friends easily and helps the ones she has. She is also very forgiving.
The most important parts of her life are family, friends and dreams because they have made her the person she is today.
She lives with her parents, older sister Whitney and younger brother Paul on a farm outside Cottonwood.
She has lived in Idaho county all her life.
Madison Ulmer
Madison Ulmer is the 15 year old daughter of Doug and Tina Ulmer of Kooskia.
She will be a sophomore at Prairie High School this fall.
She has been involved with HOSA, swim team, volleyball, Prairie League, youth group, basketball and softball.
She has been involved in 4-H the past two years in Lewis County and will be switching to Idaho County this year.
For employment she does babysitting.
Hobbies include swimming, hanging out with friends, taking walks and watching movies.
Plans after high school include graduating from LCSC then attending and graduating from medical school.
Her life goals are to graduate from medical school, become a doctor and then to work for Doctors Without Borders.
She feels her strongest personal quality is her determination. She likes seeing things through to the end and finishing them correctly.
The most important part of her life is her family. Without them she would not be where she is today. They give her so much encouragement to do what she loves.
She says her family is amazing. The love and support they give her cannot be topped. They are her rock. Without them she would be lost in this world. She has an older brother Garrett and an older sister Kyndahl.
She has lived in Idaho County all her life.
Brooke Eades
Brooke Eades is the 17 year old daughter of Patrick and Marci Eades of Kamiah.
She is a homeschooled senior who plays sports for Kamiah High School.
She plays volleyball and track at Kamiah, goes to the Nazarene Church and helps coach the middle school discus and shot put throwers. She also goes to youth group, has gone to teen conference for 3 years and is part of the CVRA rodeo drill team.
Past fair involvement includes being a former Idaho County 4-H Ambassador. She has been in 4-H for 10 years and has done lamb, horse, goat, rabbit, sewing, archery and tole painting 4-H projects. She has also done cake decorating, scrapbooking and meat goats. She has been a teen leader for her club’s decorations committee for the past three years and has made a majority of the decorations.
She works at the Sacajawea Café in Kamiah as a waitress and also grooms dogs and cats. Her mom is the county dog groomer.
She enjoys riding horses, 4-wheelers and dirt bikes. She also loves to draw and paint. She also plays recreational volleyball every Sunday. She also like to ski, snowboard, write music, sing and hang out with friends.
After high school she plans to go to beauty school in Coeur d’Alene and then use her skills to start her own salon. She does not plan to go to beauty school until 2016.
Three life goals are to start her own salon, become a 4-H leader to better the community and to play college sports of some kind.
She feels her strongest personal quality is that she is very outgoing and her parents taught her to work hard and help out others. She is not afraid to be herself and loves to help anyone needing a helping hand.
The most important parts of her life are her family and God. Her family always supports her in her decisions and helps when she needs help. They have also brought her to know God so that she can better know herself.
She has two brothers, Michael and Gabriel. Her father works in Orofino and her mother grooms dogs at home so she can take care of her family.
She has lived in Idaho County for 16 years.
Jolene Chmelik
Jolene Chmelik is the 16 year old daughter of Joe and Julie Chmelik of Grangeville. She will be a junior at Grangeville High School.
She is currently a member of the Idaho Drug Free Youth Group and has played volleyball for 1 year and basketball for two years.
She has participated in the Idaho County Fair for the past 5 years with 3 years of hogs, 2 years of sheep and 2 years of dog projects.
She works at the Primeland Country Store in Craigmont.
She enjoys spending time with friends and family, horseback riding and going to the river.
After high school she plans to attend college at Washington State University and graduate with a veterinary degree.
Her three life goals are to graduate college, open her own vet practice and do missionary work in Africa.
She feels her strongest personal quality is her honesty. She says she has a hard time lying to people. If she does tell a lie it puts a knot in her throat and the truth comes out.
She feels her family is the most important thing in her life. They helped form the person she is today. They have helped her through everything and she knows they will always be there for her.
She is the second oldest of 4 girls. Her family enjoys being outside and they all love to go horseback riding and go to the river during the summer months.
She has lived in Idaho County for 14 years.
Lauren Goldman
Lauren Goldman is the 15 year old daughter of Jeff and Becky Goldman of Grangeville. She will be a sophomore at Grangeville High School.
She is a member of band, the school play and Varsity Blue at school, Church Youth Group, Horse Bowl, volunteers at the city library, makes visits to the local nursing home, helps with Vacation Bible School and is a 4-H member.
In past fairs she has had 4 years of poultry projects, 3 years of rabbits, 3 years of lambs, 2 years of horses, 4 years of dogs, 1 year of horseless, 1 year of vet science, Know Your Government, and is the president of the Hold Your Horses 4-H Club and secretary for Lively Livestock.
She makes money doing babysitting and housesitting.
She enjoys 4-H, her animals, playing with friends, riding horses, swimming, rafting, riding 4-wheelers and music.
After high school she would like to go to veterinary school at either Boise State or Washington State or go to medical school at Vanderbilt.
Her 3 life goals are to graduate high school with honors, go to college for veterinary or medical school and raise a family in Idaho County and enroll her children in 4-H.
She feels her strongest qualities are she loves people, is enthusiastic and is optimistic about life. She loves meeting new people, playing with children and doing work.
The most important thing to her are her friends, family and faith. She has constant encouragement to do great things in her life from her family, church and friends. They all support her in all that she does.
Her father is a general contractor and football coach at Grangeville. Her mom is a stay at home mom (as Lauren adds – the hardest job in the world!). She has one older brother, Wesley, a senior at GHS and a younger brother Stephen, an 8th grader at Sts. Peter & Paul. Both play football.
She has lived in Idaho County for 6 years.
