School Board meets
The school board held their annual meeting in conjunction with the regular July meeting Monday, July 21.
Gus Hoene was re-elected as chairman and Lynn Guyer was also re-elected as vice-chairman. Denise Uhlenkott will continue as clerk/treasurer with Amy Sigler and Lynn Rehder serving as assistant treasurers.
Meeting dates and times will continue to be the third Monday at 7 p.m. during the summer months and 5:30 p.m. the rest of the year.
Uhlenkott, Hoene and Guyer will continue as check signers with at least two signatures needed on district checks.
Hot lunch prices were raised from $1.70 to $1.75 at the Elementary, from $2.10 to $2.25 for junior and senior high school students and from $3.75 to $4.00 for adults. Breakfast will continue to be free for students but adults will be charged 25 cents per ala carte item.
Bus rental, per diem and facility use rates will stay the same as last year.
Shane Chapman was approved for hire as the new art teacher. He has been in Kansas the last several years but has family in the Slate Creek area.
Jennifer Spears was approved for hire as the summer school teacher. Summer school will run from July 28 through August 8.
A couple of funds transfers were approved.
Extracurricular assignments for the 2014-15 school year were also approved. (see below.)
A concussion policy change discussed at the June meeting was also approved.
A change in the extracurricular activity athletic policy was approved. This was made to eliminate starting the season in one sport and switching midway through as happened a couple times last year.
Superintendent Rene’ Forsmann introduced a strategic planning document to the board members. There will be a committee that will get together and go over this and it will be posted to the school website within a week or two so that patrons can review it.
In the facilities update Forsmann noted cabinets for Elementary classrooms are at the school and ready to be installed. There has also been a lot of painting done at the Elementary. Floors have been redone and some painting done at the junior-senior high school as well.
A possible future project is a centralized bus garage likely to be placed on the athletic field complex near the Primeland gas pumps. It would be made large enough to get all the buses under cover. Forest fund money could be used to pay for it.
In administrative reports Forsmann noted that the Elementary School open house will be Wednesday, August 28 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. She also noted that $936.80 was collected from the sale of old cabinets, shelves, etc. from the elementary classrooms. There may be some more of this available once the new cabinets are all installed.
In her superintendent’s report she said they are working with the City of Cottonwood to provide a resource officer in the schools once a week and at after school functions. Safe and Drug Free monies could be used along with residual funds from a grant the city received would allow them to continue to use Jason Rambo in this position. The city would be the fiscal agent.
Carrie Nygaard’s report noted that back to school registration is set for August 13 beginning at 8 a.m. Also on that date there will be a parent/athlete night for sports at 7 p.m. at the high school gym. Paperwork will be covered.
Volleyball will begin play on August 25 with a jamboree at Grangeville.
On August 26 there will be a First Aid/CPR class with all coaches and bus drivers participating.
The meeting adjourned at 5:40 p.m. It had started at 5 at the request of board members wanting to attend the Noelle Pikus-Pace event at Grangeville.
