Lady Pirates win 2 matches
The Prairie Lady Pirates opened their season with a pair of match victories winning a 5-game set at Lapwai, Tuesday, Sept. 2 and a 3-game sweep at Grangeville Thursday, Sept. 4.
At Lapwai
The season and White Pine League opener at Lapwai proved to be a struggle as Prairie had to come from behind to win 25-19, 22-25, Kayla Schumacher tips the ball over against Lapwai. She had a big service run that turned the match around for Prairie. #13 is Holli Uhlorn.14-25, 25-20, 15-10.
Prairie fell behind in the opening set 2-8 but rallied to take the lead when Hailey Danly scored 5 straight aces on jump serves to give Prairie a 14-11 lead.
Lapwai came back to retake the lead at 15-17 but a cross-court kill by Krystn Uhlenkott and a 7-point service run by Chaye Uptmor that included 2 aces, 2 kills by Uhlenkott and a kill each from Natasha Gimmeson, Shayla VonBargen and a back row score from Uptmor, put Prairie up 23-17. Eventually VonBargen recorded the game-ending kill for the 6-point win.
The second game was a back and forth battle with 4 lead changes and neither team leading by more than 3 points.
It looked like Prairie might pull out the win when they took a 19-16 lead but Lapwai came back to take the lead for good at 20-21 and went on to win by 3.
In game 3 Prairie jumped out to a 4-0 lead on jump serves by Danly but Lapwai came back and pretty much dominated the rest of the game.
A 7-point service run by Lapwai put them up 8-19 and Prairie never got closer than 10 the rest of the game.
In a do-or-die game 4 Lapwai carried the momentum from game 3 and took leads of 0-3 and 1-5.
Lapwai held that lead until a stuff block by Kayla Schumacher made it 11-15 and put her on the service line.
Schumacher had a huge 11-point service run with just 2 aces as Uhlenkott dominated at the net scoring 7 kills. Gimmeson added a kill as Prairie turned a 5 point deficit into a 22-15 lead.
Lapwai got back within 5 at 22-17 but then bricked a serve. An ace by Uptmor got Prairie to game point but Lapwai fought off 3 game points until Gimmeson scored the game-winning kill.
Danly started off the fourth game with a 4-point service run with an ace plus a kill and a stuff by Holli Uhlorn and a kill by Schumacher.
Prairie was able to hold on to the lead throughout the clinching game with Schumacher scoring 3 kills for each of Prairie’s final 3 points of the match.
Uhlenkott finished the match with 20 kills and 3 aces. Schumacher, after struggling with her hitting through the 2 losses, got hot late and wound up with 14 kills including a stuff and 5 aces plus 14 service winners. VonBargen had 10 kills including a stuff and 2 aces. Uhlorn had 10 kills including a stuff. Danly had 43 assists, 1 kill and 10 aces. Gimmeson had 5 kills and 11 assists. Uptmor had 1 kill and 5 aces. Sarah Seubert had 2 back row kills and Kellie Heitman had 1 back row kill.
The JV team beat Lapwai 2 games to 1, 15-25, 25-13, 15-13.
In the opening game service runs of 7 and 5 points by Lapwai turned a 4-2 Prairie lead into a 7-15 Lapwai lead and the Wildcats held on for the win.
Prairie turned things around in the second game as Britney Bianchi had a 7-point run that included 6 aces that put Prairie up 10-1. Two aces each by Mykaela McWilliams and Sierra Latimer and 3 aces by Josie Peery help keep the Pirates in control and they cruised to the 12 point win.
The deciding third game was close all the way although Lapwai led only twice at 1-2 and 2-3. A free ball point by Angela Wemhoff tied the game at 3-3 ad Prairie took the lead with 2 kills by Sydney Bruner.
Lapwai was able to tie the score at 6, 8 and finally at 13 but could never regain the lead.
A kill by Bruner broke the 13-13 tie and Leah Higgins served up an ace to win the match.
At Grangeville
The non-league match at Grangeville was a study in domination as Prairie won 25-7, 25-13, 25-16.
Shayla VonBargen pounds the ball at Grangeville as Hailey Danly watches after making the set.Grangeville scored the first point in the opening game but that was the only time they led. They bricked their first serve to tie the game and Schumacher served 2 aces and Uhlorn scored a stuff to put Prairie up 4-1.
After trading sideouts, Uptmor served 5 straight points with an ace plus 2 kills by VonBargen and a kill each by Gimmeson and Uhlenkott.
After several sideouts, Uhlenkott scored a kill to put herself on the service line. Going exclusively to the jump serve she served 9 straight points, 6 of them aces. Schumacher added 2 kills and VonBargen scored the other as Prairie took a 22-4 lead.
Danly wound up scoring the game-winning kill.
Uhlorn scored a sideout kill to open the second game and Danly then jump-served 3 aces in a row for a 4-0 lead before a violation  for having a wrong number on the lineup sheet ended the run. Since it wasn’t caught until 4 points had already been scored it didn’t cause any points to be lost but Grangeville was given a point and the serve.
3 jump serve aces by Uhlenkott made it 13-4 and 3 more jump serve aces by VonBargen put Prairie up 17-6.
Grangeville got back within 7 at 18-11 and 19-12 but that was as close as they would get as Prairie won by 12.
The third game saw Prairie break open a close game of 5-3 with a 5 point service run by Uptmor. She had an ace with Schumacher, Uhlenkott and VonBargen adding kills at the net and herself adding a back row kill.
Prairie built an 11 point lead at 16-5 after 2 aces by Uhlenkott and a kill by Schumacher.
They led by as many as 12 at 21-9 and 24-12 only to see Grangeville put together a bit of a rally to get the margin down to 8 before Uhlenkott scored the match-winning kill.
VonBargen had 13 kills in the match including 2 stuffs. She also had 4 aces. Uhlenkott had 10 kills including 2 stuffs plus 11 aces. Schumacher had 7 kills and 3 aces. Danly had 3 kills 25 assists and 4 aces. Uhlorn had 5 kills including a stuff. Gimmeson had 3 kills, 9 assists and 2 aces. Uptmor had 2 kills and 2 aces.
Prairie is now 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in White Pine League play.
Much like they did at Lapwai the JV team lost the first game but came back to win the match 23-25, 26-24, 15-4.
Wemhoff served Prairie to a 7-0 lead to start the match with 4 aces plus 2 kills by McWilliams and another by Sierra Latimer.
Unfortunately they gave it all right back as Grangeville answered with 10 straight points.
Prairie trailed until Latimer served them into the lead late. A bricked serve by Grangeville put her on the service line where she served an ace to tie the game at 20. A bump kill by McWilliams and 2 more aces put Prairie up 23-20 but that was it. A net violation ended Latimer’s run and Grangeville scored the final 5 points of the game to win.
In the second game Wemhoff again served Prairie to an early lead with 2 aces plus a kill each by McWilliams and Leah Higgins for a 5-1 lead.
Grangeville came back and took a 12-14 lead before missing on a spike attempt.
Wemhoff then served 3 straight aces to put Prairie up 16-14.
Grangeville again took the lead at 17-19 but a kill by McWilliams  who then served an ace tied it at 19. A kill by Bianchi put Prairie up 20-19 before a sideout. Grangeville bricked their serve and Higgins served an ace to put Prairie up 22-20.
Grangeville came back though with a 1-4 run to set up match point at 23-24. A net violation tied it and Bruner was then able to serve the final 2 points. McWilliams scored a kill and then Bruner served an ace to win it and tie the match at a game each.
In the deciding game Latimer served Prairie into control of the game. She took over at 1-2 and served 7 straight points, 4 of them aces. McWilliams added a pair of kills and Sam Remacle made a great save that wound up falling in for a kill.
Grangeville scored a sideout and cut the lead to 8-4 before McWilliams scored a kill and then took over at the service line where she proceeded to serve out the match. She had 3 aces while Higgins and Remacle each added a kill as Prairie won in convincing fashion 15-4.
