Lady Pirates win District Title
The Prairie Lady Pirates knocked off Troy in 4 games Wednesday, Oct. 22 at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston to claim their first District Volleyball championship in 11 years.Krystin Uhlenkott was able to cut her spike past the Troy blockers.
It was their first ever at the 1-A level. The 2003 District title ended a run of 8 titles in 9 years and was the last year Prairie was at the 2-A level.
Prairie won by scores of 25-20, 20-25, 25-14, 25-23. After numerous close calls over the years they were finally able to get past Troy in a District match.
Prairie started well as Hailey Danly served them to a 4-0 lead with an ace plus 2 kills and a stuff block from Kayla Schumacher.
Prairie pretty much held on to that margin the rest of the game, leading by as many as 7 but never trailing.
Troy did cut the lead to 1 at 17-16 but a kill by Krystin Uhlenkott ended that rally and a kill by Shayla VonBargen and an ace by Natasha Gimmeson put Prairie back on top by 4.
A tip by Danly on second touch got Prairie to game point and Holli Uhlorn scored the game winner when she stuffed a Troy spike.
Prairie again scored the first 2 points of the second game on a kill each by Uhlorn and Gimmeson. From there on though the second game took a different turn as Troy came back for a 5-7 lead.
From there the two teams battled back and forth as the score was tied 9 times, the last time at 16-16.
At that point Troy’s 6’ plus outside hitter Abby Blum stuffed a Prairie spike and Troy never relinquished the lead again as they won by 5 to even the match.
Danly served 2 aces to open the third game and after a sideout, Uhlenkott score a kill to put Schumacher on the service line. A kill each by Gimmeson and Uhlenkott and a stuff by Uhlorn with an ace by Schumacher made it 7-1.
Troy never got any closer that 3 at 7-4 the rest of the game as Prairie dominated.
The Pirates’ biggest lead came at 24-12 on a kill by Uhlenkott. A violation and an ace allowed Troy to fight off 2 game points but Uhlenkott then scored the kill for the game winner and a 2 games to 1 lead.
In the fourth game Troy had an early lead at 3-4 but a kill by VonBargen, another by Schumacher and a jump serve ace by Gimmeson put Prairie into the lead for good.
Troy stayed within range the rest of the game, pulling within 3 several times.
Prairie took a 23-17 lead on an ace by Chaye Uptmor.
Blum scored a pair of kills and Brittany Hosley added another as Troy closed within 23-20.
A kill by VonBargen off a Troy block put the score at quadruple match point at 24-20.
A kill by Blum for the sideout was followed by a couple of hitting errors by the Pirates as they were maybe trying too hard for that District title winning kill with one hit going into the net and another going just wide.
Prairie finally got the match winner when VonBargen scored on a tip, a strategy that worked many times during the match, especially for Schumacher who picked up several kills by tipping the ball over the blockers with Troy failing to cover.
Schumacher had 19 kills including a stuff plus 1 assist and 3 aces. Uhlenkott had 18 kills and an ace. VonBargen had 15 kills including 2 stuffs plus 4 aces. Uhlorn had 9 kills including 3 stuffs. Danly had 6 kills, 33 assists and 4 aces. Gimmeson had 5 kills including a stuff block of Blum, 24 assists and 4 aces. Uptmor had 3 assists and 3 aces.
Prairie takes a 19-3 record (including the matches at the Genesee Tournament) into the state tournament.
