Lady Pirates win twice
The Prairie Lady Pirates picked up a pair of wins over teams with Bulldog nicknames to head into Christmas Break with a 10-1 record.
On Tuesday, Dec. 16 they gave Genesee their first loss by a 46-31 score at Genesee. On Friday, Dec. 19 they beat Grangeville 51-32 at Cottonwood, quite a change from the 3-point win last week at Grangeville.
At Genesee
After a tight first quarter that saw the two teams tied at 8-8, Prairie pulled away in the second quarter to take a 27-14 lead at halftime.
Prairie led 37-23 after three quarters.
Defense was the key for the Pirates as they held Genesee’s Kaleigh Ranisate, who had been averaging over 20 points per game, to just 4 points. They had a variety of defensive looks including a box and one, with Krystin Uhlenkott getting the primary assignment.
Shayla VonBargen led the scoring with 16 point and 18 rebounds plus a bunch of blocked shots.
Kayla Schumacher scored 10 points, Uhlenkott 9, Hailey Danly 7, and Angela Wemhoff 4.
Prairie also won the JV game 49-25.

Vs. Grangeville
The return bout against Grangeville was a lot more lopsided than the first game which was a 3-point win for Prairie.
It started out like it was going to be lopsided in Grangeville’s favor as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-10 lead, scoring 10 straight after a game-opening free throw by Wemhoff.Kayla Schumacher drew a lot of attention from the Grangeville defense but still managed to score 11 points.
About midway through the first quarter things started to swing the other way. Prairie held Grangeville scoreless the final 4:42 of the quarter and started to chip away at the lead.
VonBargen scored a pair of free throws and a steal by Schumacher led to a putback by Wemhoff. 
VonBargen added a free throw and Chaye Uptmor and Wemhoff each added a putback. Wemhoff’s tied the game at 10-10. 
A steal by Uptmor led to a basket by Schumacher that gave Prairie a 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Uhlenkott opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer and Grangeville finally broke their 5 minute plus dry spell with a basket.
A lay-up by Uptmor kicked off an 8-0 run by Prairie that made it 23-12. Each team added a free throw to make it 24-13 at the half. After trailing 1-10, Prairie had outscored Grangeville 23-3.
The Lady Pirates extended that run to 31-3 by scoring the first 8 points of the second half. Schumacher, who had been held to just 2 points in the first half, scored 5 of those 8 as Prairie led 32-13.
Grangeville finally broke through with 4 straight points by Addie Lutz but Prairie then went on an 8-2 run to extend the lead to 40-19 after Natasha Gimmeson converted a 3-point play.
Grangeville scored just before the buzzer to make it 40-21 after 3.
Prairie extended the lead to as many as 23 at 49-26 in the fourth quarter before settling for a 19 point win.
Despite her slow start, Schumacher led the scoring with 11 points with Danly scoring 10, Uptmor 7, Wemhoff and VonBargen 5 each, Uhlenkott and Sarah Seubert 4 each, Gimmeson 3 and Kylie Tidwell 2.
Prairie dominated the boards 53-35 with VonBargen and Schumacher grabbing 10 each. Wemhoff and Danly added 8 rebounds each.
Uhlenkott had 5 steals and Danly and Schumacher had 3 assists each.

Prairie is now 10-1 overall and 5-1 in league play. They won’t play again until January 6 at Moscow.
Prairie also won a low-scoring JV game 28-25.
Prairie opened the game with a 4-0 lead on baskets by Leah Higgins and Kylie Tidwell, fell behind 4-6 then rallied to tie the game at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Selena Davila scored on a putback to open the second quarter and Prairie never trailed again although Grangeville did manage to tie the game a couple of times.
Grangeville tied it at 14-14 in the second quarter but Prairie ended the half with a 6-0 run on 2 baskets by Tidwell and a putback by Davila for a 20-14 lead.
Prairie scored just 2 points in the third quarter while Grangeville scored 6 to cut the lead to 22-20 after 3 quarters.
Grangeville tied the score at 24-24 with 4:48 left but Sierra Latimer and Davila each scored to put Prairie up 28-24 and Grangeville could muster only a single free throw in the final 4:48 of the game.
Tidwell and Davila each scored 8 to lead the JV’s in scoring. Sarah Seubert and Talyss Lustig each scored 4 while Higgins and Latimer scored 2 each.
Prairie had a 38-35 rebounding edge led by Lustig and Davila with 9 each.
Lustig, Davila, Tidwell and Seubert had 3 steals each while Tidwell and Josie Peery had 2 assists each.
Prairie was 13 for 51 from the field, 25%, and 2 for 8 at the line, 25%. Grangeville was 11 for 38 from the field, 29%, and 3 for 10 from the line, 30%.
The C team also won, 45-31.
