Lady Pirates win twice
The Prairie Lady Pirates won their final two regular season games, both played at Cottonwood. They beat Asotin 73-36 Wednesday, Jan. 28 and on senior night they defeated Highland 71-19 on Friday, Jan. 30.
The two wins give them a 17-3 record. They concluded their league season last week with a 10-2 record good for second place. They will play their first District game on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 8:15 p.m. They will play either Troy or Genesee, whoever won their game Tuesday, Feb. 3
Vs. Asotin
The Lady Pirates broke open a close game with Asotin in the second quarter, thanks in large part to their full-court trapping defense.
Prairie led just 15-13 at the end of the first period but outscored Asotin 22-11 in the second quarter to take a 37-24 halftime lead.
They kept it going in the third as they outscored the Lady Panthers 28-9 to take a 65-33 lead in to the fourth quarter, which was played with a running clock.
Krystin Uhlenkott filled up the stat sheet with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals. Kayla Schumacher chipped in 14 points and led in rebounds with 12. Angela Wemhoff and Hailey Danly were also in double figures in the scoring column with 13 and 10 points respectively. Shayla VonBargen added 6, Chaye Uptmor 5, Talyss Lustig and Tasha Gimmeson 3 each and Sarah Seubert 2.
Uhlenkott had three 3-pointers as part of her team high 17 points with Schumacher and Danly each adding a triple each.
Prairie had an even easier time of it in the JV game as they routed the Panthers 52-11.

Vs. Highland
The Senior Night game against Highland was an easier than even expected win because Highland coach Rusty Lorentz did not start his regulars, apparently not wanting to take a chance on getting one of them hurt in a non-league tilt before their District opener on Tuesday. From left, Shayla VonBargen and Prairie’s 2 seniors, Kayla Schumacher and Tasha Gimmeson look up to see whether Schumacher’s shot went in against Highland on Senior Night.
That resulted in Prairie jumping out to a 16-0 lead and a 36-4 lead by the end of the first quarter thanks in large part to 17 Highland turnovers.
Danly and Uhlenkott were the scoring beneficiaries of the Highland turnovers with 11 and 8 points respectively in the first quarter alone.
The only change to Prairie’s regular starting lineup was to insert Gimmeson for Uptmor. Gimmeson and Schumacher are Prairie’s only two seniors.
Prairie coach Lori Mader pulled off the press in the second quarter and got her own bench players in on the action as Prairie took a 47-14 led at halftime meaning Prairie outscored Highland just 11-10 in the quarter.
The third quarter continued in that vein as Prairie led 54-19 with 3:30 left in the third quarter, outscoring Highland 8-5 to that point of the quarter.
From that point on the game tilted completely to Prairie’s favor as the Pirates finished the game with a 17-0 run.
The two seniors contributed well to the contest as Gimmeson had 8 points, 6 steals, 5 rebounds and 4 assists while Schumacher had a game high 14 points with 8 rebounds and 8 steals. Maybe with an eye toward the postseason, Mader put Schumacher at the top of her zone defense in the second half and Schumacher’s quick reactions had her snagging a couple of passes out of the air and converting them to easy transition scores.
Also scoring in double figures were Danly with 12 and Uhlenkott with 11. Wemhoff scored 8, Uptmor 6 and VonBargen and Peery 2 each. Everybody got into the scoring column as Lustig, Seubert and Kylie Tidwell each added 2 points. Seubert was the last one to get into the scoring column as she scored on a putback with 12 seconds left.
Prairie had a 44-31 rebounding edge led by Schumacher and Danly with 8 each with Uhlenkott adding 7.
Angela Wemhoff added 5 steals to the totals racked up by Schumacher and Gimmeson. Gimmeson’s 4 led the team in assists.
Prairie was 31 for 74 from the field, 42%, and 8 for 15 at the line, 53%. Highland was 8 for 34 from the field, 25%, and 1 for 2 at the line, 50%.
Prairie takes a 17-3 record into the District Tournament where they were to face the Troy-Genesee winner Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 8:15 p.m.
The JV game was just as lopsided as the varsity game as Prairie rolled to a 56-10 win over the Nezperce JV’s despite not using any of the varsity swing players and not using their usual full-court press. Nezperce did not use any of their varsity swing players either.

Also shown is Chaye Uptmor and cheerleaders Madison Ulmer, Heidi Holubetz, Beth Dinning, Jessi Reiner, Kirsten Latimer and Britney Bianchi.Prairie still managed to force 14 first quarter turnovers as they rolled to a 19-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. They spread the scoring out as Ally Sonnen came off the bench to score 6 points with Leah Higgins adding 5 and Selina Davila 4.
Sarah Ross scored 6 of Prairie’s 15 second quarter points as Prairie shut out the Indians to take a 34-2 halftime lead.
With the game well in hand Prairie’s defense packed their zone into the paint in a pre-agreed upon strategy and Nezperce was able to connect on some out side shots.
Prairie still outscored Nezperce 12-6 in the quarter thanks to Sonnen’s dominance in the paint offensively as she scored 6 in the quarter, 4 off of putbacks.
The fourth quarter turned into an effort to get everyone into the scoring column in the JV’s final game of the season. Going into the quarter everyone but Jade Peery and Sam Remacle had scored. Peery banked in a shot with 3:15 left and that left Prairie running their offense through Remacle the rest of the way and she finally got a shot to go in with 10 seconds left.
Sonnen led the team in scoring with 12 points with Davila adding 10 as Nezperce had no one to match up with Prairie’s two post players. Sierra Latimer and Ross scored 6 each with Higgins scoring 5, Trista Latimer 4, Delaney Uhlenkott 3 and Sydney Bruner, Alexis Shears, Sierah Poxleitner, Peery and Remacle 2 each.
Davila and Sonnen each had a double-double with Davila grabbing 15 rebounds and Sonnen 12 to lead Prairie to a 57-25 dominance on the boards.
Higgins had 5 steals while Davila had 4 and Bruner had 3 assists while Higgins, Uhlenkott and Peery had 2 each.
Prairie was 26 for 74 from the field, 35%, and 3 for 10 at the line, 30%. Nezperce was 5 for 33 from the field, 15%, and 0-4 at the line.
