Goodbye to the Chileans

“Cocoa” Maria Jose Garcia and “Nachi” Maria Ignatius Garcia are presented by Mrs. Amy Rose with Summit Academy’s “Patriot Award.” The girls, exchange students at Summit Academy from Chile, had to return home at the end of January. Photo provided by Summit Academy.
The entire Summit Academy gathered on Jan. 28 after lunch to wish foreign exchange students “Cocoa” Maria Jose Garcia and “Nachi” Maria Ignacia Garcia “Adios!” for their return to Chile, South America.  Cocoa and Nachi arrived in September, 2014.  Since then, they have improved in English, expanded their understanding US culture and experienced life on the Prairie.
And as they were positive, well-behaved students during their Summit stay, Cocoa and Nachi were honored with the “Patriot Award”: “At Summit Academy we are not only true patriots of our country and our founding Fathers, but we are also true lovers of our Faith,…the Church, and its Founder,  Jesus Christ.”  Cocoa and Nachi participated in all of their classes, completing homework assignments, although not required to do so.
Cocoa and Nachi were recommended to study at Summit Academy by Father Reuben who serves as a missionary priest in Chile.  The Summit students wrote letters of au revoir.   Molly Seubert provided cake and refreshments; Nick and Sherri McDonough served the food at the farewell.  Nachi and Cocoa will be greatly missed.

The Kindergarten class of Summit Academy hosted the Summit Senior Class of 2015 for lunch last Friday.  The Kindergarteners recited poems, at pizza, and played “Capture the Flag” with the Seniors.  It was a lot of fun! Photo provided by Summit Academy.

Summit Pushes the Limits!  With only two weeks to spare, the Chemistry Class at Summit Academy rallied in the “Chem E Cars Challenge.” Discovering different types of chemical reactions, the students built, advertised and showcased their model cars on Wednesday, January 28.  In order to win, the students had to pass the finish line (10 feet) and have the most votes from the students. The first contestants were “the Chileans” Nachi and Cocoa Garcia.  They designed a soda-propulsive car.  With vigor and swiftness, Coca and Nachi combined Diet Coke™ and Mentos™.   Pushing, pushing, pushing, the car only traveled a few feet—“back to the drawing board.”   The powdery and gum-like substances in Mentos™ with Diet Coke’s™ carbonation usually builds quite an explosion! Next, Ashlee Stubbers, Thomas Schwartz, and Megan Seubert presented “Speedy Feet,” propelled by a mixture of baking soda and vinegar.  Faster, further and freer, “Speedy Feet” darted straight down the runway, traveling about 6 feet—still short of the finish line.  The acidic-basic exchange unleashed excellent effervescent energy! With “Barbie™ Car,” Nathan Beckman, Josh Frei, and Josh Lustig fatally blew their car, transporting Barbie™, sky-high into the air!  With a potassium nitrate mixture,t he conveyance overturned several times in the process, moving approximately 7 feet.  The fuel, oxidizer, and additives provided a real ride. Last, the concocted “Thunder Horse” traveled with the greatest controlled momentum.  Rachel Waters, Caleb Currier’s and Dean Stubber’s jalopy was fueled by another potassium nitrate mixture, stopping at 7 feet. The rocket powered “Thunder Horse” raced down the runway with much more consistency than “Barbie Car”, although with less emotional intensity.   Because the goal of the “Chem E Car Challenge” is to cross the finish line with the most votes, no one officially won the event, but everyone did receive honor awards.   Models were also judged on engine performance, safety specifications, and marketing eloquence.   The junior and seniors have been studying chemical reactions with their teacher, Miss Kimberly Frei, learning more of how God’s beautiful creation is filled with potential energy, waiting to be discovered, pondered and appreciated!  Shown are Miss Kim Frei, Nachi Garcia, Cocoa Garcia, Megan Seubert, Nathan Beckman, and Ashlee Stubbers test-drive their vehicles.

Summit wins 2 of 3
The Summit Patriots won 2 of their 3 games this past week. On Tuesday, Jan. 27 they traveled to Weippe and beat Timberline 57-34 in their only league game of the 3. On Friday, Jan. 30 they hosted Potlatch at Craigmont in a non-league encounter and picked up a surprising loss 55-61. Finally on Monday, Feb. 2 they hosted Salmon River at the Grangeville Middle School gym in another non-league contest and won 79-69.
At Timberline
In the league game at Timberline Thomas Schwartz had his biggest scoring night of his varsity career as he hit three 3-pointers and scored 17 points, mostly in the first half as Summit rolled to an easy win.
Summit jumped out to a 20-9 lead after one quarter and made it 38-14 at the half.
They eased off a bit in the third quarter but still took a 49-22 lead into the fourth quarter.
Tyler Krogh wound up leading the Patriots in scoring with 19 points with Josh Lustig posting his third straight double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Patrick Chmelik led in rebound with 13 and added 4 points. Chris Osborne added 4 points while Justin Wassmuth scored 2 and Nathan Beckman 1.
Schwartz added 6 steals and 2 assists.
Timberline won big in the JV game by a score of 38-65.

Vs. Potlatch
The loss to Potlatch was somewhat surprising as the Loggers have been at the bottom of the White Pine Division 1 standings while Summit is atop the White Pine Division 2 standings.
The Loggers got a double barreled attack from Kenny Sheffler and Devin Richards who combined for 55 of the Loggers’ 61 points.
Richards went 7 for 10 from 3-point range in the first half to pile up 23 points and lead the Loggers to leads of 14-19 at the end of the first quarter and 29-32 at the half.
Summit switched over from their usual zone to a box and one on Richards in the second half and that allowed Sheffler to score 21 points and keep Summit from taking over the lead.
Summit trailed 41-44 after 3 quarters.
Summit got 22 points from Krogh, including four 3-pointers with Chemlik scoring 9, Schwartz 8, Lustig 7, Osborne 5, Stubbers 3 and Beckman 1.
Krogh and Lustig both fouled out which hurt Summit’s chances to rally late. A 13 for 22 performance at the free throw line for the Patriots didn’t help either.
Potlatch also won the JV game 44-56.

Vs. Salmon River
After giving up eleven 3-pointers against Potlatch, Summit ran into another 3-point happy team in Salmon River as the Savages sank 13 3-pointers against the Patriots.
Summit was able to counter by owning the glass, limiting Salmon River usually to just 1 shot and getting several second chance Summit’s Josh Lustig comes up with a loose ball. Summit called a timeout to avoid a jump ball call.opportunities on their own end.
An example of second chance opportunities came in the first quarter. Krogh had trouble finding the hoop with his shots but on 4 of his 6 misses, Summit rebounded the ball and scored on putbacks. Chmelik, Beckman, Lustig and Osborne each scored after a missed shot by Krogh as Summit cut a 9-14 deficit down to 1 point at 15-16  by the end of the quarter.
Chmelik opened the second quarter with a pair of free throw and Schwartz scored after stealing the ball to put Summit up 19-16 and they never trailed again although the Savages were able to keep it close.
Salmon River pulled within 1 at 19-18 but Chmelik scored on an inbounds pass from Lustig and Krogh broke out with a 3-pointer to put Summit up by 6.
Twice more in the quarter the Savages were able to pull within 2, at 29-27 and 33-31, but Summit was able to answer.
Salmon River got within 1 with 1:45 left after a 3-pointer by Tucker Boyd but Krogh answered right back with a 3-pointer and Beckman scored on a putback to end the half with Summit up by 6 at 40-34.
Summit extended the lead to 10 points at 49-39 in the third quarter but Salmon River roared back with a couple of long 3’s by Jimmy Shepherd and later in the quarter.  The Savages got back within 3 points at 53-50 but a basket on an inbounds play by Chmelik and a putback by Osborne made it 57-50 at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter Salmon River was able to cut the lead down to 2 at 66-64 when Shepherd converted all 3 free throws after being fouled on a 3-point try.
Krogh got fouled and made both ends of a 1 and 1 and then stole the ball which led to a basket by Chmelik to put Summit back up by 7 at 72-65 with 1:20 to play.
Salmon River twice got back within 5 but could get no closer as Summit made enough free throws down the stretch to finally win by 10.
Josh Lustig wasn’t far from a triple-double in the game as he led the team with 22 points which included 3 out of 4 from 3-point range. He added 12 rebounds and 8 assists. Chmelik and Osborne each had a double-double as Chmelik had 18 points and 13 rebounds and Osborne had 16 points and 13 rebounds. Krogh had 13 points and 3 steals while Schwartz had 4 points and 6 steals. Beckman added 4 points and Stubbers added 2 points.
Summit dominated on the boards 48-22.
The Patriots were 31 for 59 from the field, 53%, and 12 for 28 at the line, 43%. Salmon River was 20 for 55 from the field, 36%, and 13 for 30 from 3-point range, 43%. They were 15 for 19 at the line, 79%.

The JV team lost to Salmon River 35-52.
They started well as they took an 8-5 lead as Osborne scored 6 but Salmon River then went on a 0-17 run to take control of the game.
Caleb Currier finally broke the scoring drought with a 3-pointer and Luke Schwartz added a basket but Summit trailed 13-24 at the half.
With Tyler Krogh providing an offensive spark as he came in for Alejandro Kopczynski who left temporarily due to an injury, Summit was able to get within 9 at 28-37.
Salmon River took a 28-39 lead into the fourth quarter and held off the Patriots to win by 17.
Currier scored 10 to lead the JV team with Schwartz and Krogh scoring 8 each, Osborne 6 and Justin Wassmuth 3.
Salmon River dominated the boards 27-49. Jacob Stubbers led the Patriots with 9 rebounds with Currier adding 7.
Schwartz had 5 steals and Stubbers had 2 assists.
