Lady Pirates clinch state berth
The Prairie Lady Pirates clinched their fifth straight trip to State with a 53-32 win over Genesee Wednesday, Feb. 4 at the District Tournament at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston.Kayla Schumacher scores on a lay-up against Genesee at District. Also shown is Shayla VonBargen.
It will be Prairie’s 26th appearance at state in the 39 years of the program.
The Pirates’ defense came through for them as they held Genesee to single digit scoring in 3 of the four quarters and helped make up for a rather ragged offensive effort.
Genesee sat back in a zone and tried to force Prairie to beat them from the outside, which Prairie was able to do on occasion.
The Pirates jumped out to a 5-0 lead thanks to offensive rebounding as Hailey Danly and Krystin Uhlenkott each scored on a putback.
Genesee finally scored on a pair of free throws by Kaleigh Ranisate at the 4:04 mark but Prairie answered with a 3-pointer by Uhlenkott on an inbounds feed from Angela Wemhoff.
A steal by Chaye Uptmor then led to a pair of free throws by Kayla Schumacher that put Prairie up 10-2.
Genesee freshman Courtney Burt finally scored Genesee’s first basket at the 1:57 mark but Prairie answered 20 seconds later with another 3-ball by Uhlenkott on another inbounds feed from Wemhoff to make it 13-4. That’s where the score stood as the first quarter ended.
Genesee scored to open the second quarter but Prairie answered with a 10-0 run, 6 of those basically on one possession. Wemhoff connected on a jumper from the elbow and right after that Genesee coach Brandon McIntosh picked up a technical foul as he was complaining to the referees about what he thought should have been a 3-second call against Prairie. Schumacher made both free throws and the ensuing possession led to Uhlenkott hitting another jumper, from just inside the 3-point line that gave Prairie a 19-6 lead.
Schumacher stole the ball on Genesee’s following possession and drove the length of the court for a lay-up. She added another basket on a putback that gave Prairie a 23-6 lead.
Krystin Uhlenkott sites in a 3-pointer against Genesee. She hit 3 of 4 long distance attempts in the game. At left is Hailey Danly.Genesee was able to cut the lead down to 14 at the half with a late 3-pointer by Burt.
Genesee had a good third quarter with Ranisate connecting on a pair of 3-pointers, 1 from about 25 feet, before picking up her fourth foul. Genesee post Rachel Linehan took over the scoring after that as Genesee was able to cut the lead down to single digits at 32-24 before Danly scored on a drive to the hoop to give Prairie a 34-24 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Uhlenkott opened the fourth quarter scoring with her third 3-pointer of the game and Schumacher followed with a basket inside to put Prairie up 39-24. That turned out to be Prairie’s last basket of the game as the rest of their points came at the free throw line.
Danly hit 2 0f 4 from the line to finish off a 9-0 run and give Prairie a 41-24 lead.
Genesee was able to cut the lead down to 12 at 44-32 with help from some missed Pirates free throws but then Prairie finished off the game hitting 9 of their final 14 attempts at the line while Genesee went scoreless over the final 2:44.
Schumacher wound up with a double-double, leading Prairie in both scoring and rebounding with 18 points and 11 rebounds. She was 10 for 12 at the free throw line. Uhlenkott scored 16 and was 3 for 4 from 3-point range. Danly added 11, Wemhoff 3, Uptmor and Sarah Seubert 2 each and Shayla VonBargen 1.
Prairie had a 36-33 rebounding edge.
Schumacher, Uhlenkott and Danly each had 4 steals as Prairie forced 23 turnovers from Genesee while committing just 13.
Danly had 6 assists to lead the team.
Prairie was 15 for 45 from the field, 33%, and 20 for 35 at the line, 57%. Genesee was 11 for 42 from the field, 26%, and 6 for 8 at the line, 75%.
Prairie is now 18-3 on the season and will play Lapwai for the District Championship Friday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
If they win that game their state opener would be at 3 p.m. MST Thursday, Feb. 18 at Columbia High School in Nampa against the District 3 runner-up. If they lose they would play at 8 p.m. MST on that same date against the District 3 champion.
