With the loss Prairie winds up second at the District Tournament and will take on District 3 champion Liberty Charter at 7 p.m. Pacific Time Thursday, Feb. 19 at the State Tournament at Columbia High School in Nampa.
Lapwai meanwhile gets District 3 runner-up Idaho City at 2 p.m. PST and Genesee, which won both of their play-in games, will take on District 4 champion Raft River at 12:15 PST.
District 5-6 champion Challis and District 4 runner-up Oakley play in the other half of Prairie’s bracket. Prairie would play one of those teams on Friday, 7 p.m. PST if they win, 2 p.m. PST if they lose.
Prairie struggled against Lapwai’s full-court press from the start as they committed 10 first quarter turnovers and they got very few uncontested shots when they did beat the press.
Lapwai jumped out to a 2-10 lead but a basket by Shayla VonBargen and 2 free throws by Chaye Uptmor cut the deficit to 6-10.
That was the last time Prairie was close though as Lapwai finished the first quarter with a 2-7 run for an 9-17 lead.
A 0-9 run in the second quarter put the Wildcats up by 21 and they led 13-32 at the half.
Lapwai took off the press in the second half but hit 12 of 19 shots as they shot over Prairie’s zone, hitting 5 of 5 from 3-point range.
Prairie had a chance to close up the final score from the free throw line in the fourth quarter as they went to the line for 15 attempts but made just 7.
Schumacher wound up with 15 points to lead Prairie in scoring while Krystin Uhlenkott scored 13. VonBargen added 8, Uptmor 3 and Hailey Danly and Angela Wemhoff 2 each.
Lapwai also had a 32-35 edge on the boards. Schumacher had a double-double for Prairie with 11 rebounds while VonBargen added 7.
Uhlenkott and Wemhoff had 5 steals each and Schumacher 4 as the turnover battle came out surprisingly even at 26 turnovers each. Uptmor had 2 assists.
The major difference was in field goal shooting where Prairie was 15 for 53, 28%, and Lapwai was 29 for 50, 58%. Lapwai was also 10 for 16 from 3-point range, 63%. Prairie was 14 for 28 at the line, 50%, while Lapwai was 4 for 7, 56%.
