Lady Pirates 2nd at State
The Prairie Lady Pirates made it to their third state championship game in the past 4 years but had to settle for second this time at Nampa Feb. 19-21.
They opened the tournament with a 60-25 win over Liberty Charter on Thursday, Feb. 19 then knocked off Challis 53-30 Friday, Feb. 20 to reach the state championship game. Both of those games were at Nampa’s Columbia High School. On Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Ford Idaho Center, also in Nampa, they lost for the fourth time this season to Lapwai, 43-65.
Prairie finished the season with a 20-5 record with 4 of those losses coming to Lapwai while the other loss was to Moscow, a 4-A school.
Vs. Liberty Charter
In the state opener against Liberty Charter, Prairie’s offense took a back seat to their defense in the first half.Angela Wemhoff provided a first half scoring spark off the bench against Liberty Charter, scoring 3 baskets when everybody else was struggling to score.
Prairie struggled to find the hoop against Liberty’s zone, hitting just 4 of 20 shot attempts in the first quarter.
Defensively though Prairie forced 9 first quarter turnovers and limited the Patriots to just 6 shot attempts, allowing Prairie to take a 9-7 lead into the second quarter.
Liberty kept it close through the second quarter despite 9 more turnovers as Prairie still struggled with their shooting, hitting just 5 of 16 attempts.
Midway through the quarter freshman Angela Wemhoff came off the bench and provided an offensive spark hitting 3 of 4 attempts which led to a 20-15 lead. Kayla Schumacher got fouled late in the half and converted both free throws for a 22-15 halftime lead.
A change to the basket on the other end provided a dramatic difference in the third quarter as all of a sudden Prairie’s shots started to fall. That allowed Prairie to blitz the Patriots with a 16-3 run over the first 4 minutes of the third period and turned a 7 point halftime lead into a 20 point lead at 38-18.
Liberty Charter answered with 4 straight points but Prairie outscored them 10-1 over the final 3:07 to take a 48-23 lead into the final quarter.
Prairie then completely shut down the Patriots in the final 8 minutes holding them to just 4 shot attempts, of which they made 1, and 3 missed free throws. Prairie opened the quarter with 10 straight points and finished with their biggest lead of the game.

Schumacher then hit a jumper from 15 feet and Uhlenkott scored a lay-up after a steal to push the lead back to 16 at 28-12. Prairie led 29-15 at the half.
Challis was able to get the lead back down to 10 late in the third quarter at 36-26 but Danly was fouled on a 3-point try as the quarter ended. She made just 1 of the 3 free throws but then hit a perimeter shot to start the fourth quarter scoring that kickstarted an 11-0 scoring run that put the game out of reach.
Challis started jacking up 3-point attempts and scored just 4 points in the final period as Prairie again had their biggest lead of the game at the final gun as Danly finished off the game with a buzzer beater.

Vs. Lapwai
For the fourth time this season Prairie and Lapwai squared off in the championship game and Prairie was able to keep it close for a half.Hailey Danly looks to make a play after going to her knees after a loose ball in the Lapwai game.
Lapwai forced early turnovers with their press and jumped out to a 0-7 lead but Schumacher showed she wanted to finish her last game as a 2-time state champion by scoring the game’s next 6 points to cut the deficit to 6-7.
Lapwai scored to take a 6-9 lead into the second quarter.
Schumacher scored again to open the second quarter on a feed from VonBargen and Danly followed with a putback to give Prairie their first and unfortunately only lead at 10-9 with 7:13 left in the half.
Lapwai responded with three straight 3-pointers to take a 10-18 lead but Prairie was able to close the half with a 9-3 run that brought them within 19-21 at halftime. 7 of those 9 points came at the free throw line which had the Lapwai fans crying about the officiating like they did in last year’s title game.
Lapwai opened the second half with a 3-pointer by Shiniah Holt but Danly responded with 2 free throws to make it 21-24.
At that point Lapwai took control with their 6’ junior post Taylor Whitney scoring 6 straight points before going to the bench with her fourth foul. When Whitney went out, senior guard Marquel Shawl took over scoring Lapwai’s next 6 points as the Wildcats took a 24-40 lead. They led 26-42 heading into the fourth.
Prairie was able to get the lead back down to 11 at 32-43 when Schumacher rebounded her own missed free throw and putting it in to turn a potential 3-point play into a 4-point play. Prairie had more chances to cut into the lead but missed their next 6 free throw attempts.
