Seubert takes 2nd in essay contest
Megan Seubert earned 2nd place in Idaho for the Daughters’ of the American Revolution Scholarship contest.  She presented this essay on February 21 and was awarded $50.
Following is her essay:
A Warning for America
Megan Seubert, a senior of Summit Academy, challenges us to remember the past.  Her essay “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It” calls us to take hold of the truths that made America a strong country.  If we succumb to societal self-centeredness, should we expect to survive?  Below are excerpts from her paper.Megan Seubert
“Can we look back on our history and predict our future?  Can we take the lessons we learned in the past in order to prevent the same mistakes from occurring in the future?  Yes, indeed we can!  History is one of the most essential subjects to learn because history does in fact repeat itself.
“So what can our American history prepare us for in our upcoming future?  It is important to understand our past and the way that our society operated at that certain point in history so that you can compare the events and people to our present time in order to predict the future.
“During the American Revolution, when the revolutionists were fighting to succeed from Great Britain, all that they cared about was their freedom from the Parliament.  The first generation citizens of the United States of America dedicated their entire life goals and aspirations to seeing that America was an independent and stable society, founded under God and free from the reign of Britain.
“When our Founding Fathers established our nation, they formed the Constitution of the United States of America in which they inscribed a set of principles based upon one nation founded under God, independent from all other governments, and prided itself on the equal rights bestowed upon all of its citizens.
“As John Adams once stated, “I must study politics and war so that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy.”
“John Adams was pleased to go through fire, war and politics just so that his sons, you and I, may live in a self-ruling nation and study whatever we like.
“So now let us compare the past events to our present day.  In today’s American society, our generation, especially the younger generation, takes our freedom for granted.  We find it hard to recognize the price that was paid in order to have a nation where we attend college, to own a car or possess private property.  But most importantly, we forget how we obtained those rights long, long ago at the establishment of our nation.  Now our founding values are being overturned as if nothing is wrong and many of our citizens could care less even to call themselves an American or not.
“If we continue to head in the direction of taking our freedom for granted, corroding our American values and not being proud of the American name, then soon and very soon all of the founding principles that were so difficulty grasped will vanish.”
