Students release fish
On May 21, the Agricultural Class from Nezperce and Highland, 4th grade students from Highland and Prairie and 7th and 8th grade students from Summit Academy completed their “Hatchery in the Classroom” program with the release of over 300 (2 to 3 inch long) steelhead into Lawyers Creek.
Casey Mitchell, Nez Perce Tribe Fish Biologist, Dworshak Fisheries, delivered 100 steelhead eggs to each classroom in March.  He explained to the students how to take care of the fry and their life cycle.  The students, with the assistance of their teachers, monitored the water temperature and clarity.  When the fish eggs hatched the students took charge of feeding them in addition to the monitoring duties.
The LSCD received a grant in 2013 from the Nez Perce Tribe to purchase aquariums for the schools as part of their ongoing Information and Education programs. This hatchery project demonstrates the commitment the Lewis Soil Conservation District (LSCD) has towards improving fish habitat and water quality.
The LSCD wishes to thank Kyle Stapleton, Josette Nebekar, Danette Horrocks, Kim Schumacher, Becky Higgins and Kimberly Frei for their vigilance in rearing the fish in their classrooms, also thank you to Casey Mitchell and Jill Olson, Dworshak Fisheries, for their support in making the project such a success.

Students from area schools released their fish Thursday, May 21 into Lawyer’s Creek to complete their “Hatchery in the Classroom” project. 4th graders from Prairie Elementary and 7th and 7th graders from Summit Academy were among those involved in the project.
