30 girls out for volleyball
The Prairie Lady Pirates have 30 players turned out for volleyball this year with 9 on the varsity and the other 21 making up the JV and C teams.
4 starters return from last year’s state championship team although one of those, Chaye Uptmor, is in a different position.
Seniors Hailey Danly at setter, Krystin Uhlenkott at outside hitter and Shayla VonBargen at middle blocker are the other returning starters. Uptmor, a junior, played libero last year and will be an outside hitter this year.
Moving into the starting lineup are juniors Sarah Seubert at outside hitter and Mykaela McWilliams at middle blocker.
Making up the reserves are sophomores Angela Wemhoff, Leah Higgins and Sydney Bruner.
Prairie ought to be competitive again with perennial powers Genesee and Troy for the league and possibly the district and state titles.
Danly looks to be the full-time setter this year instead of the 2-setter attack they had last year with departed senior Tasha Gimmeson. Although they could run some 2-setter action again if Wemhoff or Higgins is in the lineup as both set for the JV team last year.
JV players are junior Britni Bianchi, sophomores Josie Peery, Darlene Gehring, Nicole Poxleitner and Trista Latimer, and freshmen Jordyn Higgins, Theresa Wemhoff, Kristin Krogh and Madison Pecarovich. Anna Vinsova, an exchange student, is also listed as a freshman.
C players are sophomores Alexis Shears, Jade Peery and Trista Latimer and freshmen Koleen Hasselstrom, Noelle Uhlenkott, Sabrina Lustig, Kodi Tidwell, Madison Hinkelman, Ellea Poxleitner and Emma Gehring.

Lady Pirates take 3rd at Lewiston Tournament
The Prairie Lady Pirates competed in the Lewiston Volleyball Tournament Saturday, August 29 and placed third while fellow White Pine League team Genesee took second. They were by far the smallest schools in the tournament but showed well against the bigger schools.Sarah Seubert had a lot of key serving runs for Prairie as they took third at the Lewiston Tournament.
Prairie opened the day with a 1 games to 2 loss to Kellogg then got rolling with a 2-game sweep of host Lewiston and a 2 games to 1 win over Pendleton in pool play. That gave them a first place finish on a tiebreaker over Kellogg in pool play and the third seed into the Gold Bracket.
In a one-game to 25 match against Moscow they prevailed 25-20 to advance. They then swept #1 seeded Sandpoint despite losing starting middle blocker Mykaela McWilliams to an ankle injury midway through the second game.
That win advanced them to a match with Lake City of Coeur d’Alene, the #2 seed. They won the first game but lost the next 2.
Coming off that tough battle they faced a rested Genesee team that only had to play 1 game to beat Sandpoint.
Prairie played well early but ran out of gas about halfway through the 1-game match and wound up settling for third place.
Vs. Kellogg
In their opening match Prairie lost to Kellogg 18-25, 25-20, 11-15.
The opening game against Kellogg started well then the Pirates ran into a snag when Kellogg put together a 7point service run that turned a 2-point deficit into a 5-point lead.
Prairie was able to pull within 1 at 16-17 but a pair of 3-point runs by Kellogg gave them the game.
The second game threatened to be a repeat when Kellogg put together another 7 point run to turn what had been a 12-8 Prairie lead into a 12-15 deficit.
Prairie kept it close and then finally got over the hump at the finish once Sarah Seubert took over at the service line. A kill be Krystin Uhlenkott made it 19-20 and sent Seubert to the line. 4 more kills by Uhlenkott, an ace by Seubert and a net violation by Kellogg and Prairie had pulled out a 25-20 win.
The decisive third game went back and forth early on and saw Prairie take a 10-7 lead after a kill each by Hailey Danly and Shayla VonBargen.
Kellogg then put together another big service run of 5 straight points to take a 10-13 lead in a game to 15.
After a trade of sideouts Kellogg scored the match winning point to win 11-15.
Vs. Lewiston
After a tough, 3-game loss, Prairie had to come right back and play Lewiston without any break other than warmup time. They were able to pull out a 25-22, 25-23 win which quite possibly may be Prairie’s first win ever in a varsity volleyball match against Lewiston. Although we’re not sure they have even played each other very many times.
Prairie fell behind 4-7 in the opening game against Lewiston and still trailed at 8-12 before mounting their comeback.
VonBargen scored a 1st touch kill at the net to put herself on the service line. After an ace and a kill by Chaye Uptmor, Prairie was within 1.
After trading sideouts, Seubert went to the service line. McWilliams scored on a stuff block and Seubert then added 2 aces to put Prairie ahead 15-13.
Prairie lead until a 4-point run by Lewiston gave them a 17-18 lead.
The two teams traded scores until Lewiston took their last lead at 20-21. Uhlenkott scored a kill and VonBargen followed with an ace.
Lewiston scored the sideout but a kill by McWilliams, an ace by Seubert and a kill by Uhlenkott gave Prairie a 25-22 win.
Prairie again fell behind early in the second game, trailing by as many as 5 at 8-13 and 9-14.
At 11-15 VonBargen scored a kill to put Uhlenkott on the service line. 3 aces plus a kill each by Uptmor and VonBargen gave Prairie a 17-15 lead.
Scoring went back and forth for a bit with Lewiston taking the lead at 22-23 after an ace.
McWilliams then scored a kill to put Uhlenkott on the service line. Uptmor scored a kill for match point and Uhlenkott served up an ace to win it.
Vs. Pendleton
Prairie had a match off before having to face Pendleton and it wound up being an extra long break as the power got knocked out for about 90 minutes.
When Prairie and Pendleton finally faced off their starting time was about 2 hours later than what it was scheduled for and Prairie went on to win 20-25, 25-12, 15-13.
With Pendleton having lost all 4 games they had played so far, Prairie coach Cheyenne Hudson got her bench players some action and that went well for awhile as Prairie took a 14-12 lead.
Pendleton then got things turned their way and outscored Prairie 6-13 the rest of the game to pull out a 20-25 win.
Prairie went back to their main 6 for the second game and after taking a slim lead early, broke things open with a 5 point service run by Uhlenkott for a 15-8 lead.
Prairie lead 16-11 when VonBargen scored a kill to send Danly to the service line.
Danly had an ace and Seubert and Uptmor each added a kill and VonBargen had a stuff plus a kill for a 22-11 Prairie lead.
After a Pendleton sideout, VonBargen scored another kill and a stuff and Uhlenkott added the game-winning kill.
The third game saw Prairie jump out to an 11-5 lead after a 5-point service run by Uhlenkott that included 3 aces.
Pendleton bounded right back with their own service run as they scored 7 straight to take an 11-13 lead.
A kill by McWilliams finally ended the run and McWilliams followed with an ace to tie the game at 13. After a Pendleton timeout, Danly scored a kill and VonBargen finished off the match with a kill.
That gave Prairie a 5-3 record in pool play games, tying them with Kellogg. Point differential was tiebreaker and Prairie had the edge giving them the #1 seed from their pool. Since the other two pool winners went 3-0 in their matches, Prairie was made the #3 seed into the championship bracket.
In the championship bracket the first round was 1 game to 25. After that it was best 2 of 3 in the winner’s bracket and 1 game to 25 in the loser’s bracket, full double elimination.
Vs. Moscow
PChaye Uptmor goes up for a spike against Kellogg at the Lewiston Tournament. Also shown is Mykaela McWilliams.rairie did not start well against Moscow as they fell behind 3-8. That changed when Moscow bricked a serve and Seubert took over and served 4 straight aces to tie the game.
After a Moscow sideout Prairie took their first lead of the game on a kill each by Seubert and Uptmor. A kill by Danly followed and Uhlenkott added an ace for a 12-9 lead.
McWilliams had a 4-point service run that featured 2 kills by Danly, a stuff by Uptmor and a kill by Uhlenkott that created some separation at 17-10.
Moscow was able to rally back within 2 at 22-20 but were then called for a foot fault on a serve and Seubert followed with an ace and Uhlenkott ended the 1-game match with a kill for a 25-20 win.
Vs. Sandpoint
Next up Prairie played #1 seeded Sandpoint who had won their matches a little more convincingly than #2 seed Lake City had. Prairie won in straight sets 25-19, 25-20 but lost McWilliams for the remainder of the tournament.
In the second game she had leapt and come down on Uhlenkott’s foot, rolling her ankle. At the time they were afraid it might be broken but we’ve heard it was a bad sprain instead.
Prairie scored the first 3 points to start the first game then gave up 6 straight to fall behind.
Prairie fought back and took back the lead with Seubert serving. She took over at 6-8 and served 4 straight. Danly and Uhlenkott each had a pair of kills in the run.
Sandpoint tied it at 10 but Prairie took the lead for good on a stuff by McWilliams.
Prairie was able to keep Sandpoint from scoring more than a point or 2 on serve the rest of the game and pulled out the 6 point victory.
In the second game Prairie had taken a 9-4 lead after a 3-point run by Seubert when McWilliams got hurt on the ensuing sideout. Angela Wemhoff was put in to take McWilliams place which led to a couple of position changes. Uptmor and Uhlenkott wound up playing middle when VonBargen was in the back row while Wemhoff played right side hitter.
Somehow Prairie managed to keep the lead although Sandpoint trimmed it to just 1 at 10-9.
Prairie built it back to 4 at 18-14 only to see Sandpoint pull back within 1 at 18-17.
A tip by Uptmor held them off and Wemhoff served up an ace for a 3-point lead.
Sandpoint again pulled within 1 at 21-20 before VonBargen scored a stuff. Uptmor then served out the match with 2 aces plus a match-winning kill by Uhlenkott.
Vs. Lake City
Next up was a best 2 of 3 match against Lake City of Coeur d’Alene, the #2 seed. Prairie took the first game 25-22 but then lost 21-25 and 10-15.
As seemed to be their custom on the day, Prairie fell behind 0-4 in the opening game and trailed at one point by 9 points at 8-17.
At that point VonBargen scored a kill for the side out and Danly served an ace. A kill by Seubert and another ace by Danly cut the lead to 12-17.
After a Lake City sideout, VonBargen scored another kill and Seubert followed with a back row kill to cut the lead to 4.
After another Lake City sideout, VonBargen scored another kill for a sideout to put herself on the service line where she served 3 aces to cut the lead to 1 at 18-19.
Lake City scored another sideout and Uptmor answered with a kill to put Wemhoff at the service line. Wemhoff served 2 aces but only 1 of them wound up counting on the scoreboard. So instead of taking their first lead at 21-20 it was just 20-20.
Lake City then scored a sideout to take back the lead but a kill by Uhlenkott tied it at 21.
A kill by Seubert gave Prairie their first lead on the scoreboard at 22-21. After Lake City tied it, Seubert scored another kill to put Prairie up 23-22.
VonBargen then scored a first touch kill at the net and Danly scored the kill on a bump over the net on second touch for the game winner.
In the second game Prairie again fell behind early and were down 7-15 before a kill by VonBargen. A net foul was followed by a pair of aces by Danly to cut the lead to 11-15. The comeback stalled their though as Lake City answered with 6 straight points.
With Seubert serving Prairie got 5 of them back as Uhlenkott scored 2 kills, VonBargen had a kill and a stuff and Wemhoff added a kill to cut the lead to 17-21.
Two aces by Vonbargen got the Pirates within 2 at 20-22 but Lake City was able to hold them off and win by 4.
Prairie led only once in the deciding game, at 3-2. They fell behind 3-6, rallied to tie it at 6-6 but then fell behind again and lost by 5.
Vs. Genesee
The loss to Lake City dropped Prairie into a 1 game to 25 match against Genesee to see who faced Lake City for the championship. The winner would have to beat Lake City in 2 straight matches to take the title.
Prairie led only once in the game against Genesee at 8-7 and kept it close until they just seemed to run out of energy after tying the score at 12-12.
Genesee outscored them 3-13 the rest of the way to advance to the championship match.
In the first game of the championship match the power went out again in Booth Hall and Lake City was declared the winner.
