Letters to the editor from this week's Chronicle:

No. 25 10/12/15
So much for asking the question: "Why would anyone want to be a DEMOCRAT today?" One reader responded to the question in the Tribune some time ago, citing many of his beliefs nearly identical to mine... "equal rights for everyone... people of any color, religion, poor people, rich...; the sick, the healthy... the unwanted child, as well as the unborn." He goes on to include other issues which he claims are supported by Democrats, but not by Republicans; like their concern that "every born child...should receive the same adulation that Republicans...give the unborn, but refuse to provide beyond birth to those who are 'different.' " Interesting charge, but can it be defended? Many web sides claim that conservatives donate substantially more than liberals to charitable causes of the needy!
Then his "Though I do not believe in abortion, I would never force my opinion on any woman. She has the right to rule her body..." forces me to disagree a bit! The writer I assert, falls into the same trap blundered into by Jim Fisher on the Opinion Page of that same 9/27/15 Tribune, when he graciously announced that he had checked the "organ donor" box on his driver's license. Jim goes on to ask, "So tell me why it should be any different with the parts of a fetus that has been removed from the body of a woman who has chosen to abort it?" And, "Is harvesting the parts of a dead fetus any more horrifying than harvesting dead me?"
Yes, Jim, IT IS DIFFERENT, and "more horrifying" than harvesting you, WHO HAS GIVEN CONSENT, and the innocent and defenseless unborn child, WHO IS NOT ASKED FOR, NOR IS CAPABLE OF GIVING CONSENT! A far more valid comparison would ask if you would agree to someone approaching you with a medical team that tells you you must give up your heart, because some famous person needs yours. Unwilling or not, you will be taken to a hospital room, where over all your squirming and protesting, you are sedated, drugged to death, then cut up into "harvested parts," with your heart in particular going to save that famous person!!
Yes, Jim... there is a BIG DIFFERENCE!! And one other not insignificant one! You will be "sedated" before being killed, whereas many of the aborted fetuses are chemically burned, torn assunder, etc., WITH NO SEDATION AT ALL. Significant difference, I say!!
And the Tribune writer who would "never force my opinion on any woman... with the right to rule her body..." raises an interesting question! Does that mean that the writer gives her an absolute right to destroy an emerging human life just because for one reason or another, she finds it inconvenient, possibly dangerous, or maybe just embarrassing? I wonder??!!
Perhaps one should give greater attention to the miraculous facts of any new child's birth, as can be found in a book by Og Mandino, THE GREATEST MIRACLE IN THE WORLD (1975). Said to be "the most widely read inspirational and self-help author in the world at the time," Mr. Mandino in making the case that every life is a miracle, cites page after page of medical data testifying to the amazing intricacies of life which begins prior to the abortion process.
With space limited, consider just a few! The human heart! "Feel its rhythm, pulsating...day  and night, 36 million beats each year...pumping blood through more than 60,000 miles of arteries, veins...more than 600,000 gallons each year! Man has never created such a  machine!" And your brain! "The most complex structure in the universe. Inside it, are 13 billion nerve cells...in those cells, more than 1000 billion billion protein molecules!" Would you allow an abortion?
Not me! And not Mandino!! He claims life is "The Greatest Miracle in the World!!!
