School Board meets
The school board passed a motion to call for bids for the new bus barn/shop at their December meeting Monday, Dec. 21.
They went with the option of four 25 foot wide openings rather than eight 12 foot openings in the bus barn portion. They also went with the option to make it so that doors could be added, if it becomes necessary, in the future. Bus supervisor David Shears said he didn’t see the need for doors at this time but couldn’t rule out the possibility that at some future time they might want them.
Bid opening would likely be at the January meeting.
Section 1 of the policy manual update was approved with the changes suggested at the November meeting incorporated. Superintendent Rene’ Forsmann says she hopes they get Section 2 ready to look at by the next meeting.
The meeting dates for January and February were discussed as both regular meeting dates are holidays. It was decided to keep the January meeting on the 18th but change the time to 7 p.m. At this time they left the February meeting on the regular date and time.
It was also approved to hold the January meeting at the High School. When Shears commented it might be kind of cold since the boiler won’t be fired up on a non-school day it was decided to move the meeting to the shop building where an independent heating system was installed over the summer as the first stage of an upgrade on the heating systems at the high school.
The school calendar was discussed and it will be available on the school website for review. The board will take into account any comments received in the interim when adopting the calendar in January. See below..
In the facilities update Forsmann and Carrie Nygaard talked about remodeling the high school office. The idea is to get school secretary Cheri Holthaus up front where she can see people coming in and they can see her. Her current office space would then be turned into a workspace with the copier and fax machine. The board can see what they are looking at doing when they have the January meeting at the Junior/Senior High School building.
In the administrative reports Forsmann noted that the Brownfield Cleanup Grant was submitted December 18. They would know whether or not they get it in April.
It was also noted in the facility inspection by the state that there were no demerits reported. Kudos to Jake Forsmann.
Forsmann reported the Elementary Concert was a big success. Of concern though is the disruption of people coming and going throughout as their children perform.
She reported there will be a hunter safety class at the Elementary from January 25-29 for fifth grade students.
A parent survey will be going out in January as part of the Title I audit.
Nygaard reported they are looking at another dual credit course offering for next year as they hope to offer calculus. That would give them 10 dual credit courses.
Also next year all sophomores will take a semester of Microsoft IT Academy to be taught by Ryan Hasselstrom. Through this course they can get a Microsoft Office Certification or a Microsoft Software Development Certification.
The Idaho County Shootout was a huge success with the total raised now over $11,000.
The junior class held a movie night fundraiser Saturday, Dec. 12. Other activities kept the attendance down but they are looking at doing another one sometime.
Lauren Alfrey submitted the winning Father of the Year essay written about Bill Schacher.
The Junior/Senior High concert held Dec. 16 went well. Millie Wimer also had her scrap quilts made by her sewing students on display and awards were given for the top quilts.
Jan. 4 is Financial Aid Night at the PHS library.
January 12 is the only home event for the wrestling team. It will start at 6 p.m. in the gym.
Jermaine Galloway will be here on January 19. He will do a presentation for the student body at 10 a.m. and then do another for the community that evening. He is a world renowned authority on substance use, abuse and the routes bringing drugs in and out of states. Nygaard highly recommends him as she has heard him speak when she was at Kamiah.
The meeting adjourned at 6:40 p.m. The next meeting will be Monday, January 18 at 7 p.m. at the jr./sr. high school.
