Lady Pirates second at District
Lapwai dominated for 3 quarters then Prairie put on a furious fourth quarter rally only to fall short 48-58 in the District Championship game Friday, Feb. 12 at the LCSC Activity Center.Angela Wemhoff gets fouled as she goes for a shot against Lapwai in the District Championship game. Also shown is Hailey Danly.
Prairie struggled against Lapwai’s pressure defense from the onset, committing 11 first quarter turnovers as Lapwai took a 6-17 lead. Kylie Tidwell, Angela Wemhoff and Chaye Uptmor each scored a basket for the Pirates.
Prairie cut down on the turnovers in the second quarter, just 5, but couldn’t get a shot to fall as they went 1 for 9 in the quarter with the only basket being a 3-pointer by Tidwell. Wemhoff was 3 for 4 at the line as Prairie trailed 12-31 at the half.
Lapwai’s Iris Domebo was 3 for 4 from 3-point range in the half as she had 13 for the Wildcats.
Things started to change some in the third quarter as Prairie committed just 3 turnovers and Hailey Danly, after a scoreless first half, hit a 3-pointer and was 3 for 4 at the line. Prairie wound up doubling their first half total in the quarter.
Lapwai seemed content to bomb away from 3-point range as 9 of their 14 shots were from long distance. Unfortunately for Prairie, 4 of those went in as Prairie trailed by as many as 27 at 22-49.
Danly sank both ends of a 1 and 1 to end the quarter with Prairie down 25 at 24-49.
In the fourth quarter it was like a switch got flipped for the Pirates as all of a sudden they became the aggressive team with Wemhoff leading the way.
A free throw by Wemhoff, inside basket by Shayla VonBargen and a basket by Wemhoff on an inbounds play cut the lead to 20 at 29-49.
Lapwai scored on a putback but Wemhoff then scored on consecutive end-to-end driving layups. The first after inbounding after Lapwai’s score and the second when she stole the ball.
After trading scores, Prairie was still down 20 at 35-55 with 3:45 left.
Prairie then put together a 12-0 run to get the lead down to single digits.
Wemhoff scored to start the run. VonBargen scored on a nice move down low and Danly followed with a basket.
A Lapwai turnover led to a basket by Wemhoff and she followed 30 seconds later with another end-to-end drive for a lay-up. Wemhoff then fed VonBargen who made an up and under move inside for a lay-up to cut the lead to 47-55 with 1:12 left to play.
Prairie wasn’t doing this against Lapwai’s reserves as the starting unit was in for most of the run. Lapwai coach Eric Spencer called a couple of timeouts to try and stem the tide.
Lapwai finally broke through when Micah Bisbee scored both ends of a 1 and 1. Prairie got a free throw from VonBargen but Lapwai answered in the final 10 seconds for the final 10-point margin.
Prairie had outscored Lapwai 24-9 in the fourth quarter as Wemhoff scored 13 of her game-high 20 points and VonBargen added 7 of her 9 points. Prairie turned the ball over just 1 time in the quarter while forcing 8 turnovers from Lapwai. They scored as many points in the fourth quarter as they did in the first 3 quarters. Hopefully that will give them some confidence going into the state tournament.
As mentioned, Wemhoff led the scoring with 20 points and added 4 assists, 3 steals and 7 rebounds before fouling out with 49 seconds left.
VonBargen scored 9. Danly scored 8 with a team-high 9 rebounds along with 3 steals and 2 assists. Tidwell scored 7 and Uptmor and Talyss Lustig scored 2 each.
Lapwai held a 33-36 edge on the boards.
Prairie was 19 for 45 from the field, 42%, after a 10 for 15 fourth quarter. They were 10 for 22 at the line, 45%. Lapwai was 23 for 51 from the field, 45%, and 4 for 12 at the line, 33%.
Prairie takes a 16-6 record into the state tournament where they will open against District 4 champion Valley at 6:15 p.m., MST, Thursday, Feb. 18 at Columbia High School in Nampa. Genesee will play Liberty Charter in the game right after Prairie while Lapwai will play at 3 in the afternoon.
