Letters to the editor from this week's Chronicle:

Redneck Review
No. 46 3/7/2016
The long and tedious primary season continues on. (In Idaho, a chance to vote your choice comes this Tuesday, already past by the time this article hits the local press.)
For democrats, front-runner Clinton continues to edge ahead of Bernie Sanders, but not enough to push that declared socialist out of the picture. On the republican side, Donald Trump continues to baffle the experts and dismay the establishment leaders who cannot understand the frustration felt by average Americans who are sick and tired of growing government debt, higher taxes, more regulation and increased loss of basic freedoms.
Behind a bit, but showing increased strength, Ted Cruz also continues to dismay party leaders whose attempt to back Marco Rubio seems to be back firing, as his vote count continues to deteriorate. The prospect the "Grand old Party," better known as the GOP, faces, that their two leading candidates are both hated by the establishment party, has leaders there desperately searching for a way to derail their candidacies.
Lets face it folks! In recent decades, it really has not mattered a whole lot which party is in command in Washington. True, the republican side has talked tough on government spending and on reduced regulation, but a check of the record shows that more often than not, policies out of their administrations have also shown a creep down the socialist slope. The "No child left behind" program out of the Bush administration really was not a whole lot different from the "Common Core" policy recently coming during the Obama terms. Both might have been well intentioned, but both share the same faults, a belief that one-size-fits-all, top-down programs can somehow work for every child, and every school, and every state in the union.
Both of course, involve the same increases in regulations, and increases in cost, and of course, both ignore the gigantic problem of individual differences, at the individual and district and state levels. Thus you can read about and understand the difficulties different areas around the country have trying to meet their national standards.
Maybe it is high time to give close scrutiny to the essential differences between the two underlying philosophies. On the left or liberal side, you have the socialist dream that the role of government is essential is determining the best set up for national welfare. Many different definitions can be found, but essentially some basic ideals can be identified in any truly socialistc system:
1) Common or government ownership or control of land and all factors of production.
2) Government control or assignment of the role of individual workers.
3) Income equality of individuals, based on "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need," a basic socialist requirement.
Compare that to the system which provided for the explosion in standards of living that has made the USA the envy of the world, the old fashioned capitalism once found here:
1) Private ownership of property and the means of production.
2) Free enterprise, the right of each individual to choose the occupation of choice.
3) The profit motive. Wealth distribution based on the ability to satisfy others needs.
Bluntly, socialism has failed miserably every time attempted in the past, compared to our USA record breaking rise to the top in the history of nations. The choice this year is ours!!

To The Editor
With deepest appreciation to the Bundy Family et al
Like so many valiant souls before you, your personal freedoms, your self-determination and that of your loves ones, have arbitrarily been taken from you.  For having harmed no one and nothing of substance, but rather for simply standing selflessly and courageously in defense of other people's innate rights to life and property, you yourselves now live in chains.
Even while untold millions around the world gratefully and prayerfully remember you, we, too, write to assure you that you'll never be forgotten, praying to the heavens that your sacrifices be not in vain!
Be comforted as you recall that, back through time, it happened to the very best of them:  to the biblical prophets, to Jesus the Christ, to America's founders.
In your name and on your behalf we pledge to fight on...for the undying Cause of Truth and justice for which you've committed your very lives, and given your all.
Sad indeed it is, what the enemy of Liberty can do to one's outer life, and to our outer world.  But as God lives, this ("satan") Opposer cannot touch - - can never harm - - your true essence, the eternal Reality that defines you.
Ever with you in the spirit of divine love,
Carol Asher
