Lady Pirates edge Asotin in 8 innings
The Prairie Lady Pirates overcame an early 4 run deficit to win in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the eighth, 7-6, over Asotin Tuesday, April 5 in their home opener at Cottonwood.Faith Uhlenkott picks up a walk-off single, scoring Kylie Tidwell from third with a single in the 8th inning.
Asotin scored twice in the top of the first on a single and a hit batter. A wild pitch moved the runners up. The first run scored on a comebacker when pitcher Hanna Ross opted to get the out at first rather than at the plate. The second run scored on a dropped third strike with catcher Sam Remacle also opting to go for the out at first.
Prairie answered with a run in the bottom of the first when Hailey Danly doubled to left and scored when Ross followed with a double to the fence in left.
Asotin added 3 more in the second inning on a double, walk, squeeze bunt and triple for a 1-5 lead.
Prairie was able to load the bases in the bottom of the second with Danly at the plate. Danly crushed the ball to deep center but the wind knocked it down and kept the ball in the park where it was caught for the third out.
Ross settled down after a rocky first two innings and allowed just 1 unearned run on 3 hits the rest of the way.
Prairie got back into the fame in the bottom of the third. Ross led off with a single down the left field line and went to second when the fielder misplayed the ball. After a pair of outs, Remacle scored Ross with a single to right center and went to second on the throw back in. Abbie Uhlenkott looped a single behind third base to score Remacle and went to second on the throw home. Sydney Bruner kept the train rolling with Prairie’s third straight 2-out single, a shot up the middle that scored Uhlenkott to cut the lead to 4-5.
Neither team scored in the next 2 innings.
In the bottom of the sixth Kylie Tidwell led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored the tying run on Danly’s groundout to short.
Asotin took back the lead in the top of the seventh on a 1-out error. The baserunner then stole second and moved to third on a passed ball before scoring on a sacrifice bunt.
In the bottom of the seventh Remacle and Abbie Uhlenkott both reached on errors by the shortstop. Bruner moved them over to second and third with a comebacker to the pitcher. Prairie then followed Asotin’s example from the top of the inning as Kodie Tidwell executed a sacrifice bunt that saw Remacle able to score after the throw went to first for the out.
Kylie Tidwell had a shot to win it but her deep fly ball to center was caught for the third out forcing extra innings.
In high school softball, the person who made the last out in the previous inning starts the inning on second base. The Asotin runner advanced to third on a groundout to Danly at short but Ross then induced a popup to Danly and got out of the inning on a groundout to Kylie Tidwell at second.
In the bottom of the eighth, Kylie Tidwell started the inning at second. Danly tried to end it quickly but her deep fly to left was caught within a few feet of the fence. Ross then beat out an infield single and Sarah Seubert reached when the third baseman dropped her short fly ball to load the bases. Faith Uhlenkott then ended it in the Pirates favor with a walk-off single that scored Kylie Tidwell.
Prairie had 12 hits in the game with Ross collecting a double and 2 singles. Danly, Remacle and Bruner had 2 singles each while Kylie Tidwell, Faith Uhlenkott and Abbie Uhlenkott each had a single.
