Primary Election set for Tuesday
The Primary Election is set for next Tuesday, May 17 with an override levy and several contested races featured.
School District #242 is seeking an override levy of $350,000, the same amount as last year.
There is also contested race for State Supreme Court Justice to succeed Jim Jones, who is retiring. There are 6 names on the ballot but one, Christ Troupis, has dropped out. That leaves Robyn Brody, Sergio Gutierrez, William “Breck” Seininger, Curt McKenzie and Clive J. Strong in the running. If one of the five receives more than 50% of the vote they will be elected to the position. If no one candidate receives a majority, the top two will be on the ballot in the November General Election.
In the political party elections, the Republican ballot has the contested races of local interest.
For State Senator District 7, Carl Crabtree of Grangeville is challenging incumbent Sheryl Nuxoll of Cottonwood for the Republican nomination. The winner will face Democrat Ken Meyers, who is unopposed in the primary, in November.
For State Representative of District 7, Position A, Priscilla Giddings of Whitebird is challenging incumbent Shannon McMillan of Silverton for the Republican nomination. That winner will face Democrat Jessica Chilcott, who ran against McMillan two years ago, in November.
For State Representative of District 7, Position B, Kris L. Steneck is challenging incumbent Paul Shepherd for the Republican nomination. That winner will likely be the November winner as there is no Democrat filed for that position for the Primary.
Both Idaho County Commissioner posts that are up for election are contested in the Republican Primary. Former Cottonwood Mayor Denis Duman is challenging incumbent Jim Chmelik for the third district position and a 2 year term while Rusty Bennett is challenging incumbent Mark Frei for the second district position and a 4 year term. Neither position has a Democratic challenger at this time.
The U.S. Congressional Representative position has contested races on both the Republican and Democratic ballots. Gordon Counsil and Isaac Haugen are both challenging incumbent Raul Labrador on the Republican ballot while Shizandra Fox, Staniela Nikolova and James Piotrowski are vying for the Democratic nomination.
The only contested race in the primary for the U.S. Senator position held by Republican Mike Crapo is on the Constitution Party ballot where Ray J. Writz is facing Pro-Life, a person formerly known as Marvin Richardson. That is also the only position with any candidates on the Constitution Party ballot.
Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day and the polling places for each precinct are listed in the legal notice on page 10. All the sample ballots are on pages 10 and 11.
