Override levy passes, Duman, Crabtree win
The Cottonwood School District #242 override levy passed in voting Tuesday, May 17. Idaho County vote totals show 440 yes and 291 no for a 60.1% yes vote.
Both Idaho County Commissioner posts up for election were contested. In District 2, incumbent Mark Frei held off challenger Rusty Bennett 1,750 to 1,369 to win the Republican nomination. There is no Democratic challenger so it Frei will run uncontested in November. In District 3 challenger Denis Duman polled 2,014 votes to 1,157 for 2-term incumbent Jim Chmelik giving Duman the Republican nomination. On the Democratic side former Commissioner Jim Rehder polled 70 write-in ballots and will be on the November ballot.
In the District 7 state legislative positions 2 of the 3 incumbents went down to defeat. For State Senator challenger Carl Crabtree received 2,504 votes to 2,383 for incumbent Sheryl Nuxoll. Nuxoll outpolled Crabtree in Bonner, Clearwater and Shoshone Counties but Crabtree had a 209 vote edge in Idaho County, 1,732 to 1,523. Crabtree will face Democrat Ken Meyers in November. Meyers was unopposed in the primary.
The State Representative Position A incumbent, Shannon McMillan, also went down to defeat as Priscilla Giddings outpolled her 2,848 to 1,798. Giddings had a huge edge among Idaho County voters, 2,224 to 881. Giddings will face Democrat Jessica Chilcott in November.
State Representative Position B incumbent Paul Shepherd held on for the Republican nomination, outpolling challenger Kris Steneck 3,261 to 1,193. Shepherd will run unopposed in November.
In the 4-way race to succeed Jim Jones as Idaho Supreme Court Justice, no one pulled more than 50% of the vote so the top two finishers will have a runoff in November. Robyn Brody pulled 44,371 votes and will face Curt McKenzie, who had 41,268 votes, in November. Sergio A. Gutierrez received 31,596 votes and Clive Strong received 30,931 votes.
For U.S. Representative, incumbent Raul Labrador received 81% of the Republican vote and will run against Democrat James Piotrowski in November. Piotrowski received 56.2% of the Democratic vote in a 3-way race.
In the U.S. Senate race incumbent Republican Mike Crapo and Democrat Jerry Sturgill were unopposed in the primary and will face off in November along with Constitution Party candidate Ray J. Writz who defeated Pro-Life in the primary.
