Letters to the editor from this week's Chronicle:

Redneck Review
No. 58 5/30/2016
RNR #57 closed last week with the question, "What can a single individual do" in dealing with the many things around us that threaten our way of life and the existence of our nation!
Economically, a growing national debt of 19 trillion plus with no concerted effort to do any thing about it is of real concern to most of us. That growth plus several years now of zero or near zero interest rates was supposed to get our economy going again, but to date, has primarily fueled a dangerous bubble in the stock market, while adding relentlessly to the cost of living and operating expenses for farmers and small businesses alike. The FED's monthly hints of increased interest rates cause shudders in the market, and most people know they cannot raise it substantially without causing another recession or even worse, a major depression! The prediction here is that the FED will resort again to more QE, (simply more debt) or a desperate resort to negative interest rates to avoid a free fall!
And let us not even think about the political situation in this country! The recent executive order that individuals can now choose the restroom of their "gender" choice has several states in open rebellion. Add this to the threat posed by the Clean Water Act which is now threatening rural families, the recent standoffs over the use of federal land and the massive influx of illegal immigrants and potential Jihadi Muslims adds to a concern for our national welfare. No matter where you turn, our federal government today issues regulations and demands conformance in matters which are definitely unconstitutional! A quick reading of Article I Section 8 of that document, and a review of Amendment 10 will provide excellent support for that claim!
But it is in the moral area where our nation is the most vulnerable! The horrific murder, one at a time, often involving the most barbaric methods, of some 50 million plus unborn babies is alone enough to seal our fate. "Political correctness" requires that we turn a blind eye to this practice and rationalize it away by citing "women's rights," but the undisputed fact is that each abortion involves the callous destruction of the most innocent and defenseless of human beings. Not even Hitler with his massacre of Jews, and Lenin and Stalin with their murder of Kulak farmers in Russia can compete with us in the number of deaths involved!
And of course, no one dare talk about the current acceptance of homosexual "marriages." We are supposed to ignore the time-tested definition of "marriage" as the union of one man and one woman with the capacity to continue the human race. And for certain, ignore the many references in the Bible which some 80 to 85% of us claim to read and accept, which bluntly condemns the practice in no uncertain terms.
So, what can an individual do about all this? Nothing one must admit if one falls into the camp of the socialist or materialist today who looks to political and economic experts for the answer to everything. Those of us who dare to question the decisions made by them are labeled terrorists, or homophobes, or perhaps even enemies of the people. Somehow we are simply required to go along with the crowd, remain "politically correct" at all times!
But we can do a lot if we subscribe to the belief that each of us in an individually created child of God, with the capacity to "change the world" by prayer and example. In the giant tug of war going on today between good and evil, one never knows if one more person on the side of right might not be enough to turn the tide! As an old saying goes, if God is for us, who can stand against us?

Regarding Jim Rehder’s Letter to the Editor last week:
Rehder states that he “visited with Denis Duman, who defeated Mr. Chmelik, and am satisfied with his views and goals as county commissioner.” In reality, they are more than mere acquaintances. In 2008, Duman contributed $500 and wrote a letter of support for Rehder’s campaign. In 2010, Duman gave $250 to Rehder.  Rehder would have you believe his support for Duman is new, but public records reflect a very different reality.
Rehder disagrees “with Mr. Chmelik that the election results were the result of a rigorous campaign against him by ‘green groups – environmentalists’.” Just follow the money for yourself by going to the Secretary of State’s website. All that PAC money leads back to the Idaho Conservation League, et al.
Rehder complains of the Commission and “their mishandling of the county garbage issue/ there is over a 30% increase in garbage service expenditures with no sensible solution to county garbage in sight.” Like other spin masters, he does not note that the garbage contractor for the Prairie refused to re-up their contract at the same price, was unwilling to work with our recyclers, nor that the County Commission picked the lowest cost of two proposals.
Rehder whines “It’s disheartening to watch the commission’s lack of support for community and organization block grant requests…; they make community organizations, who are already hard working volunteers, jump through unnecessary hoops to gain their grant approval sponsorship.” The County CANNOT sponsor two grants at the same time, thus we had to wait on the Kids Klub grant. Perhaps Jim has become so accustomed to Democratic leadership not playing by the rules that he feels that no one needs to.  As much as he would like to mislead the public into believing that we are a board of cold-hearted, volunteer-hating Republicans, the facts speak for themselves. (See CEDA’s letter requesting withdrawal of sponsorship for Kids Klub due to the awarded Syringa Hospital grant.)
Lastly, if the County ultimately sends the dedicated money ($5000) to the “Coalition of Counties”, it will be as part of a group of 50 rural counties throughout the west who are working to get proper management of our Federal lands. Commissioner Chmelik will have no ‘personal’ financial gain from this group at all, as Rehder and others claim.
Spin. Mislead. Lie if you must. Rehder’s embrace of the democrat mantra shines through.
