Summit at Grangeville Invitational
The Summit Academy Lady Patriots had no dual matches this past weekend but did compete at the Grangeville Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 17, where they took second in the consolation bracket as they won 2 of their 5 matches.
They opened the day wit a 12-21, 15-21 loss to Logos in pool play.Ally Sonnen stuffs a Kamiah spike attempt.
Their next pool play match came against Clearwater Valley where they won 21-10, 21-12.
In their final pool play match they lost to Salmon River 11-21, 10-21.
That gave them third place in their pool and matched them against Kamiah, who was 4th in the other pool in the consolation bracket. They beat Kamiah 17-21, 21-16, 15-12 to advance to the consolation final.
In the consolation final they faced Tri-Valley which is a Cambridge-Midvale co-op. They lost to Tri-Valley 13-21, 19-21.
We don’t have any details from the Logos match but against C.V. they jumped out to a 5-1 lead behind 3 aces from Kayla Rehder and never trailed in the opening game.
Lexi Currier and Ally Sonnen each had a 4 point service run as Summit built a 17-7 lead. The rest of the game was sideouts except for a kill by Rehder with Lucy Osborne serving.
Summit never trailed in the second game either as Rehder scored 2 kills to get them to a 2-0 lead.
C.V. tied it at 2 but then missed a serve and Summit led the rest of the way.
There were no big service runs in this game until late when Erin Chmelik served 4 straight to turn a 16-10 lead into a 20-10 lead. She had 3 aces and Sonnen added a kill.
Against Salmon River Summit took a 2-0 lead on a pair of kills by Rehder but Salmon River came back and took control with a 5-15 run late turned a 6-6 tie into an 11-21 Salmon River win.
Salmon River dominated the second game jumping out to a 1-8 lead.
Summit was able to get back within 4 at 4-8 and again at 5-9 but Salmon River widened the lead from there to win by 11.
In the consolation semifinal against Kamiah, Summit took a 6-3 lead as Rehder had a 5-point service run that featured 2 stuffs and a kill by Sonnen plus a free ball kill by Hailey Stubbers.
Kamiah came right back through to take a 7-12 lead and led the rest of the game.
Kamiah jumped out to a 2-6 lead in the second game before bricking a serve. Chmelik then put together a big service run to put Summit on top. She had 4 aces while Sonnen added 3 kills as Summit took a 10-6 lead.
Summit was then able to hold on for a 5-point win to even the match.
In the deciding game the score went back and forth as the lead changed hands 4 times. Kamiah held their final lead at 10-11 but then missed a serve.
Rehder then served Summit into the lead as Sonnen and Stubbers each scored a kill and Rehder added an ace to get to match point.
A hitting error gave Kamiah the serve but Lexi Currier set up Stubbers for the match-winning kill.
In the consolation final against Tri-Valley Summit fell behind 4-11 and 7-17 in the opening game and went on to lose by 8.
The second game was a different story as Summit tried to repeat what they did against Kamiah.
Summit fell behind early but took their first lead with Currier serving  as she had 2 aces and added a free ball kill for an 8-7 lead.
The lead changed hands several time 5 times after that with Summit’s final lead coming at 15-14 after a dig of serve by Bridget Beckman went back over and found an open spot.
After Tri-Valley tied it at 15, Summit could never retake the lead although they tied it at 16, 17, 18 and 19.
At 19-19 after a tip by Beckman led to a missed hit by Tri-Valley, the Titans were able to score the sideout and then the match winner.
Summit played well despite missing starter Taylor Lustig, who was on a family trip. Freshmen Stubbers and Chmelik did a good job filling in at her spot.
