Pirates split league matches, go 4-1 at Border Battle
The Prairie Lady Pirates had a busy week as they split a pair of league matches and then won 4 of 5 matches at the Border Battle Tournament, helping Idaho to a win. Scores were 25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 25-18. 
Kamiah jumped out to a 2-8 lead in the opening game. Prairie came back with 5 aces from Mykaela McWilliams to take a 9-8 lead but Kamiah then took back the lead and mostly held it, except for a tie at 16 until late in the game. Kamiah led 17-20 when Leah Higgins scored a sideout to sent Chaye Uptmor to the service line. A kill by Madison Pecarovich, an ace, a kill by Angela Wemhoff and 3 aces had Prairie at game point. Wemhoff then spiked the ball off a Kamiah block for the game-winner. Kamiah again led early on in the second game at 4-7. Prairie came back behind 3 consecutive jump serve aces by Sydney Bruner for an 8-7 lead and led 15-8 after a 6-point service run by Darlene Gehring. In that run she had one ace with Wemhoff scoring 3 kills and Nicole Poxleitner and Uptmor 1 each. Prairie still led 17-10 when a missed spike gave Kamiah the serve. Kamiah served for 8 straight points to take the lead and Prairie never got it back as the Kubs evened the match. The third game was back and forth early on with Prairie finally getting some separation with Uptmor serving. Uptmor took over at 9-8 and served Prairie to a 14-8 lead with 2 aces plus 2 hills from Wemhoff and one from Higgins. Prairie held a 4 to 6 point lead until Pecarovich served up 2 aces with Bruner adding a kill for a 22-13 lead. Kamiah got back within 6 at 22-16 and 23-17 before a block by Uptmor and a kill be Wemhoff ended it. In the fourth game Prairie fell behind 7-10. A kill by Higgins, 2 aces by Wemhoff and a kill by Sam Remacle put Prairie up 11-10. Kamiah tied it at 11 but a kill by Uptmor and an ace by Gehring gave prairie the lead for good. Uptmor had 16 kills in the match including a block plus 19 assists and 7 aces. Wemhoff had 15 kills, 2 assists and 2 aces. McWilliams had 7 kills and 6 aces. Higgins had 6 kills, 2 assists and 2 aces. Bruner had 4 kills, 2 assists and 7 aces. Remacle had 4 kills. Poxleitner had 3 kills. Pecarovich had 2 kills, 24 assists and 8 aces. Gehring had 2 aces. Josie Peery had 1 ace. In the JV match Prairie beat the Kubs 25-8, 25-18, 9-15. Kristyna Krogh served Prairie to a 5-0 lead in the opening game and later on Alexis Hiler had a 10-point service run that put the game away. Krogh had 3 aces with Sabrina Lustig adding 2 kills while Hiler had 5 aces with Anna Vinsova adding 4 kills and Krogh 1 kill. The second game started out to be as lopsided as the first as Prairie took leads of 5-1 and 9-2 behind the serving of Emma Gehring and Lustig. They expanded the lead to 17-9 as Krogh had 3 straight aces. Kamiah got a run going late and pulled within 3 at 20-17 before Prairie pulled away with Madison Hinkelman serving 2 aces to end it. The third game was all Kamiah as hey jumped out to a 0-9 lead and cruised to the win. The C team won all 3 games, no scores available. Scores were 18-25, 20-25, 25-20 and 22-25. Prairie’s front line got hot at the net in the third game, recording several blocks on Genesee to pull out the win. In the JV match Prairie turned things around against Genesee as they won 2 of the 3 games after getting swept earlier this season. No results available on the C games.  You
wouldn’t have thought they were going to get to that point in the first
game though as they trailed nearly the whole game and lost by 9 points.
They turned things around in the second game though and led most of that game. A kill each by McWilliams and Bruner gave Prairie a 2-0 lead and they led at one point 8-3. SJE fought back to an 8-8 tie and after Prairie surged back to a 12-8 lead, SJE came back to take their first lead at 12-13. McWilliams scored a back row kill to tie it and Wemhoff served up an ace and Remacle and Bruner each scored a kill for a 16-13 lead. Prairie led the rest of the way and looked like a lock to win when SJE bricked a served to make it 24-19. SJE held off game point 4 straight times though before Higgins scored the game-winning kill. In the third game Pecarovich and Bruner each served 3 points as Prairie took a 7-3 lead. They still led 12-9 after Bruner scored a kill but SJE scored a sideout and then served 4 straight aces to get to match point. McWilliams scored 2 straight kills to tie the game at 14 but SJE then scored 2 straight kills of their own to pull out the win. 
In the opening game Prairie fell behind 1-6 but fought back to tie the game at 10-10. They never could get into the lead though and Dayton pulled away for a 14-20 lead and then held off Prairie for the 5 point win. In the second game McWilliams took over the serve at 2-3 and served Prairie to a 9-3 lead. She had 5 aces while Higgins and Wemhoff each added a kill. Dayton fought back though to get within 1 at 14-13 and again at 16-15 but couldn’t get that point needed to tie until late. Prairie led 23-20 when they missed a serve and Day then scored 3 straight points to take their first lead since 2-3 at 23-24. McWilliams scored a kill to stave off match points but a missed serve gave Dayton another match point chance. McWilliams again scored the kill to tie the game at 25-25. A kill by Dayton scored the side out for a third match point chance. This time is was Uptmor who scored a kill down the right side to tie it and Wemhoff then scored the game-winning kill as games were capped at 27. In the third game Dayton took a 4-8 lead but Uptmor served 2 aces and Higgins stuffed a spike to tie it at 8-8. After a trade of sideouts, another block by Higgins gave Prairie the lead and a kill by Pecarovich made it 11-9. Dayton tied it at 11 but a kill by Bruner and 2 aces by Higgins put Prairie at match point. After a missed serve by Higgins, Uptmor scored the kill that gave Prairie the match.  As
you can tell by the final scores, both games were close with several lead
changes with Prairie able to finish better.
The first game saw the lead change hands 6 times with Pomeroy leading late at 19-21. The next point was a great volley that finally ended on a block by Uptmor. Higgins then hit a spike that went long but a Pomeroy blocker had gotten a finger on the ball as it sailed by to tie the game. Pomeroy then got called for a double hit and Bruner served up 2 aces to get to game point at 24-21. Bruner then missed a serve but Uptmor then scored a kill to win the game. The second game only had 4 lead changes with Prairie leading for a long stretch midgame as Pecarovich had a 5-point service run that turned a 12-13 deficit into a 17-13 lead. She had just 1 ace with McWilliams scoring 2 kills and runner adding another. Pomeroy finally took back the lead at 21-22 but Bruner scored a kill to tie it and put Higgins on the service line. McWilliams stuffed a Pomeroy spike to for the final lead change. Higgins served an ace and Bruner finished off the match with a first touch kill. 
Asotin came out well in the first game, taking a 4-6 lead but Prairie took control with Uptmor serving. A kill by Wemhoff sent Uptmor to the service line at 7-7 and she served 9 straight points. She had 4 aces with Higgins scoring 2 kills and a block and Wemhoff adding a kill as Prairie took a 16-7 lead. A double hit violation ended Uptmor’s run. Higgins served 4 straight to turn a 19-9 lead into a 23-9 lead. She had 3 aces and McWilliams added a kill. A missed spike gave Asotin the serve but a kill by Bruner and a back row blocker violation gave Prairie the win. In the second game we had Prairie taking a 12-8 lead but the official scorer had it as only 10-8 and those 2 points turned out to be crucial. There had been 20 serves to that point so there was no way it could have been 10-8. Anyway, at 10-8, Asotin got a sideout and then took the lead with 2 aces. After a trade of sideouts Asotin scored 4 straight for an 11-16 lead. Prairie trailed much of the rest of the way although they should have won it when Higgins served an ace that made the score 23-23. If they’d had the 2 points the somehow lost earlier that would have been match point. As it was, Asotin scored the sideout and then scored an ace to win it 23-25. In the deciding game Prairie took the early lead but Asotin kept it close, trailing just 6-5 when Higgins scored a kill to send Wemhoff to the service line. 2 aces later Prairie led 9-5. After a sideout Higgins sent a spike to the back line for a kill and put herself on the service line. Bruner won a joust at the net and Pecarovich scored a kill to make it 12-7. After a sideout Bruner scored a kill to give Prairie back the serve. Pecarovich serve an ace and McWilliams ended it with a first touch slam. In the opening game Clarkston got several short service runs late while Prairie struggled to score when they got the serve. With that Clarkston was able to turn an 8-9 lead into a 15-23 lead. Prairie got back within 19-23 on 2 kills by Higgins, an ace by Wemhoff and a kill by Bruner but Clarkston then scored a sideout and added the game-winner. In the second game it was 2-2 when Clarkston missed a serve. McWilliams then scored an emphatic first touch kill and added a block for a 5-2 lead. After a sideout, McWilliams scored a kill then served an ace which was followed by a kill each by Bruner and Uptmor for a 9-3 lead. 3 aces in a row by Higgins plus a kill by Pecarovich gave Prairie an 18-6 lead. Clarkston scored 5 straight points to cut the lead to 7 but that was as close as they would get. In the third game Clarkston led 2-4 then bricked a serve. Two aces by Uptmor and a kill each by Higgins and Wemhoff made it 7-4. After a trade of sideouts, Wemhoff put together a service run with an ace plus 2 kills by Bruner and 1 each by Uptmor and Higgins for a 13-5 lead. Clarkston scored 3 straight but Bruner ended the run with a kill and Pecarovich ended it with a kill. For the day McWilliams recorded 53 kills which included 9 blocks. She also had 1 assists and 14 aces. Wemhoff had 33 kills, 7 assists and 8 aces. Bruner had 33 kills, 1 assist and 13 aces. Higgins had 27 kills, which included 5 blocks plus 9 assists and 11 aces. Uptmor had 25 kills, which included 3 blocks, 70 assists and 12 aces. Pecarovich had 10 kills, 68 assists and 10 aces. Remacle had 6 kills. Peery had 4 kills. Poxleitner had 2 kills and Gehring had 2 aces. Prairie is now 4-3 in league play and 9-8 overall.
It was a Dig Pink event are Kamiah last Tuesday and Prairie, without a lot of notice, dug out the shirts they used at last year's Prairie event with a couple that might be from before that.
