Trump wins presidential election
Republican nominee Donald Trump won the election for U.S. President Tuesday, Nov. 8.
Although Democrat Hillary Clinton appears to have edged Trump in the popular vote by about 200,000 votes nationwide, Trump won the all-important Electoral vote. In Idaho County Trump won by a margin of 6,441 to 1,196 and statewide 409,822 to 190,183.
Locally the only contested Idaho County race was for Sheriff and incumbent Republican Doug Giddings held off independent challenger Carlos Martinez  by less than 400 votes. Giddings polled 4,331 votes and Martinez 3951.
Republicans also swept the state legislative offices. 
Carl Crabtree defeated Democrat Ken Meyers for District 7 State Senator. Crabtree won Idaho County by a huge margin, 6664 to 1403. Crabtree won district-wide by a vote count of 14,323 to 5,071.
Priscilla Giddings defeated Jessica Chilcott for District 7 Representative, Position A. She won Idaho County by a similar margin as Crabtree, 6171 to 1832. Giddings won district-wide by 13,647 to 5,634.
Paul Shepherd was unopposed for District 7 Representative, Position B.
In other County races Republicans Denis Duman and Mark Frei were unopposed for County Commissioner and Kirk MacGregor was unopposed for County Prosecuting Attorney.
In  statewide races Republican Mike Crapo easily won re-election to the U.S. Senate polling 449,791 votes. Democrat Jerry Sturgill was a distant 2nd with 188,620 votes and Constitution Party candidate Ray J. Writz polled 41,746 votes.
Republican Raul Labrador also was re-elected as First District U.S. Congressman outpolling Democrat James Piotrowski 241,621 to 112.761.
For Supreme Court Justice, Robyn Brody outpolled Curt McKenzie statewide by 298,509 to 258,948. McKenzie outpolled Brody in Idaho County 4,240 to 2,895.
The only statewide constitution measure on the ballot, HJR-5, was approved by the voters 4,831 to 3,009 in Idaho County and 347,862 to 278,668 statewide.
