Lady Pirates beat Grangeville
In what could best be called an ugly game the Prairie Lady Pirates defeated Grangeville 41-27 at Cottonwood Tuesday, Nov. 22.
Prairie made just 3 of 17 shots from the field and 1 of 4 at the line in the first quarter but managed to take a 7-0 lead as Grangeville was 0 for 8. If Prairie has ever shut out Grangeville in a quarter before, it had to be a long, long time ago.Kylie Tidwell drives the baseline past a Grangeville defender. She wound up going under the basket and scoring on a shot from the other side.
Kylie Tidwell had 4 of Prairie’s 7 points while Chaye Uptmor scored 2 and India Peery had the only made free throw in the quarter.
Grangeville finally got on the scoreboard at the 6:51 mark of the second quarter when they made a free throw.
Prairie twice led by 9 points in the second quarter, the first after a 3-pointer by Tidwell at 14-5 and the second after a 3-pointer by Jordyn Higgins that made it 19-10, which was the halftime score.
After a 2 for 14 first half, Grangeville finally began to sink some shots in the third quarter while Prairie connected on just 2 of 15 attempts. That enabled the Bulldogs to pull within 2 points twice, at 21-19 and 23-21. The latter score is where it stood heading into the fourth quarter.
Prairie finally started to sink some shots in the fourth quarter and Grangeville cooled down after the quarter break as the Pirates opened the fourth quarter with a 14-2 run that put the game away.
Josie Peery started the run with a putback. Angela Wemhoff scored a lay-up after a steal. Tidwell added a free throw. Wemhoff then scored inside on a feed from Leah Higgins and Leah made it 33-21 with a 3-pointer on a feed from Chaye Uptmor.
Grangeville finally got their first points of the fourth quarter at the 3:07 mark but Prairie then added 4 more points, all at the free throw line, for a 37-23 lead with just 57 seconds left. Each team added 4 more points.
For the game Tidwell was the high scorer with 12 points. Wemhoff added 7 with Uptmor scoring 6. Leah and Jordyn Higgins scored 5 each with Josie Peery scoring 4 and Sydney Bruner and India Peery adding 1 point each.
Prairie held a 39-35 edge on the boards led by Josie Peery with 13. Leah Higgins added 10 rebounds.
Wemhoff had 6 steals and Uptmor had 3 assists.
Grangeville had 31 turnovers while Prairie had 22.
Prairie was 15 for 53 from the field, 28%, and 8 for 19 at the line, 42%. Grangeville was 9 for 37 from the field, 24%, and 8 for 13 at the line, 62%.
Prairie is now 3-0 on the season.
The JV team also won by a score of 45-25.
Kodie Tidwell got Prairie off to a good start with a pair of steals that led to baskets and a 4-0 lead. Kristyna Krogh added a free throw to make it 5-0.
Grangeville finally scored at the 4:00 mark.
Grangeville twice pulled within 3 points as Prairie failed to capitalize on all the free throw opportunities they were given. Krogh ended the quarter though by connecting on 3 of her final 4 free throw attempts after making just 1 of her first 7. In all Prairie was 4 for 16 at the line in the opening quarter as apparently Grangeville’s defensive plan was to foul.
Prairie led 10-4 at the end of the quarter.
A 6-1 run to open the quarter extended the lead to 16-5. Sarah Ross opened the quarter with a steal and ensuing lay-up.
Prairie eventually led 22-7 as Alexis Hiler and Kendra Duclos each scored off of a steal and Tidwell added a basket.
Grangeville scored 3 at the stripe but a basket off of a steal by Theresa Wemhoff and a final basket of the half by Duclos made it 26-10 at the break.
In the third quarter Grangeville banged home some 3-pointers to get back within 7 points at 28-21 but Prairie finished the third quarter with an 8-0 run to make it 36-21. Hiler started that run with a basket inside. Krogh hit a 3-pointer then Tidwell converted a 3-point play.
Prairie expanded on their lead in the fourth as Tidwell added 4 more points and Hiler and Hope McIntire had 2 each.
Grangeville tried to get back into the game with 3-pointers but went 0 for 8 from long range and 2 for 16 overall in the quarter.
Prairie had 3 scorers in double figures led by Hiler with 13. Tidwell scored 11 and Krogh 10. Duclos added 5 points with Wemhoff, Ross and McIntire adding 2 each.

Krogh had 8 steals with Wemhoff adding 5 steals and 5 assists.

Grangeville wound up getting tagged with 27 fouls with 2 players fouling out. Due to varsity swing players leaving in the fourth quarter they had just 4 available players for the final 4 minutes of action and 2 of those finished with 4 fouls. Prairie was whistled for 18 fouls with only 1 fouling out.
The C team also won, making it a clean sweep, 43-30.
