Lady Pirates clinch state berth
The Prairie Lady Pirates clinched a state tournament berth by defeating Troy 42-32 in their District Tournament opener Thursday, Feb. 2 at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston.
The win sets up a Prairie-Lapwai matchup for the District Championship for the fourth straight year. The game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 at the LCSC Activity Center.Angela Wemhoff had 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead Prairie to a win over Troy at District.
The winner of that game will open state action at 3 p.m. Mountain Time Thursday, Feb. 16, at Columbia High School in Nampa against the play-in survivor of our third place team, Wallace and the District 3 4th place team.
The loser plays at 8 p.m. Mountain Time against the third place team from District 3.
In the game against Troy, Prairie started slowly as they trailed the entire first quarter. Once by as many as 5 points at 4-9.
A basket each by Leah Higgins and Angela Wemhoff closed out the quarter and cut the deficit to 8-9 at the quarter break.
Prairie took their first lead of the game on a basket inside by Josie Peery 30 seconds into the second quarter. A bank shot by Kylie Tidwell made it 12-9.
Troy cut the lead back to 1 then Prairie went on a 14-2 run helped out by 8 Troy turnovers.
Josie Peery scored on a feed from Wemhoff then Wemhoff drove to the hoop and was fouled, converting a 3-point play. After a Troy basket, Wemhoff banked one in from 15 feet, India Peery drove to the hoop for a basket that was set up by a Wemhoff steal, and Josie Peery converted a 3-point play. Wemhoff closed out the run with a drive for a lay-up that made it 26-13.
Troy closed out the half with a basket to make it 26-15.
The third quarter saw Prairie’s shooting touch disappear as they connected on just 2 of 15 shots from the field. Troy was better at 3 for 7 but couldn’t make up any ground as Prairie had the only 2 free throws in the quarter as each team scored 6 points.
In the fourth quarter Troy was able to rally within 7 points at 37-30 with 2:01 left as Prairie repeatedly went to the foul line but couldn’t take full advantage of their free throws, hitting just 3 of 8 to that point of the quarter.
A driving lay-up by Tidwell put Prairie back up by 9 and Wemhoff made it 11 by converting a pair of free throws.
A Troy putback closed the margin back to 9 with 20 seconds left but India Peery made the final margin 10 with a free throw with 11 seconds left.
Wemhoff led all scorers with 20 points and added 13 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Josie Peery scored 7, all in the pivotal second quarter. India Peery scored 6, Tidwell 4, Leah Higgins 3 and Chaye Uptmor 2.
Prairie had the rebounding edge at 34-28 with Josie Peery adding 7 and India Peery 6.
Tidwell and Josie Peery had 5 steals each while India Peery had 3 assists.
Prairie was 15 for 44 from the field, 34%, and 12 for 22 at the free throw line, 55%. Troy was 15 for 39 from the field, where they outscored Prairie 30-32, for 38%, but did not attempt a single free throw in the game.  Troy had 17 fouls with 2 players fouling out to just 9 fouls for Prairie.
Prairie also had the edge on turnovers with 19 compared to 23 for Troy.
Prairie takes a 19-2 record into the District Championship game.
