Lady Pirates take second at District
Lapwai jumped all over the Prairie Lady Pirates defensively in the first quarter and went on to win the District championship 36-70 at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston Friday, Feb. 10.
With the loss Prairie will take on Liberty Charter at 7 p.m. PST Thursday, Feb. 16 at Columbia High School in Nampa in the 1A, Division 1 state tournament.
Lapwai will take on Troy, who beat Wallace and Ambrose in play-in games, at 2 p.m. PST.Angela Wemhoff battles Lapwai’s Iris Domebo who tries to take the ball away.
Prairie turned the ball over 16 times in the first quarter alone, leading to just 6 shot attempts as Lapwai jumped out to leads of 0-14 and 2-20.
Chaye Uptmor finally put Prairie on the board with a basket at the 2:13 mark and later added 3 free throws in the quarter for all 5 of Prairie’s first quarter points. She actually made all 4 of her free throws but was called for a lane violation on her second attempt.
Lapwai led 5-25 at the end of the first quarter.
Lapwai made it 5-31 in the second quarter before Angela Wemhoff found Josie Peery open for a lay-up in transition.
Lapwai then scored another 5 straight before Prairie put their first mini-rally together, outscoring Lapwai 10-4over a 4 minute stretch as Wemhoff and India Peery each scored 4 and Leah Higgins added the other 2 on an inbounds pass from the side from cousin Jordyn Higgins.
During that span Wemhoff also picked up her third personal foul and sat out the final 2 minutes of the half.
Lapwai scored 2 free throws late to make it 17-42 at the half.
Prairie had another 11 turnovers in the second quarter making for 27 in the first half.
Lapwai had a 3-12 run to open the third quarter and squash any hopes of a Prairie rally. Also during that time Wemhoff picked up her fourth foul on a charge, although there was apparently some confusion at the scorer’s table as to whether that was her third or fourth.  Just seconds later she picked up her fifth foul going after a loose ball on defense and left the game for good with 4:27 left in the third quarter.
A 3-pointer at the buzzer of the third quarter gave Lapwai a 31-63 lead and invoked the running clock for the fourth quarter. Both teams got their reserves some playing time in the fourth quarter.
Uptmor, Josie Peery and India Peery each scored 7 points to lead the Pirates with Jordyn Higgins adding 5, Wemhoff 4, Kylie Tidwell 3, Leah Higgins 2 and Sydney Bruner 1.
Lapwai was led in scoring by Koyama Young with 24 and when she scored her final point in the third quarter she had outscored Prairie 20-24 all by herself.
Prairie had the edge on the boards 39-25. Leah Higgins and Josie Peery each had 8 to lead the team while Uptmor added 6.
Uptmor and Wemhoff had 2 steals each and Wemhoff and Jordyn Higgins each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 13 for 36 from the field, 36%, and 8 for 20 at the line, 40%. Lapwai was 29 for 61 from the field, 48%, and 7 for 10 at the line, 70%.
Prairie takes and 18-3 record into the state tournament with all 3 losses coming to Lapwai, each by a successively larger margin.
