Lady Pirates win opener
After having 3 games cancelled due to wet fields the Prairie Lady Pirates finally got a game in and won a wild game at Culdesac by a score of 12-10 in their season and league opener Thursday, March 23.Sam Remacle heads for third on one of her two triples at Culdesac.
Prairie won the game despite having most of the calls go against them in the game. Two runs came in on illegal pitches and the final out got postponed two batters due to another illegal pitch. Prairie also had a home run turned into just a triple on an out call at the plate.
Prairie scored first with a pair of 2-out runs in the first inning. Sarah Ross hit a 1-out single and went to second on a passed ball. Sam Remacle reached when the first baseman dropped the throw. Alexis Hiler came in to courtesy run. Sydney Bruner then scored both runners with a double down the right field line.
Culdesac answered back with 2 runs of their own on a pair of singles, a stolen base, 2 wild pitches, a passed ball and the first illegal pitch.
Prairie took back the lead in the second as Leah Higgins and Sierah Poxleitner each beat out infield hits. After there were 2 outs Faith Uhlenkott scored both runners, who had moved to second and third on a passed ball, with another infield hit. Uhlenkott stole second then stole third and scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2.
Culdesac came back with a run without benefit of a hit as the only baserunner reached on a passed ball on strike 3. Another passed ball moved her to second and a groundout moved her to third. She then scored on an illegal pitch.
Prairie made it 6-3 with a run in the third. After there were 2 outs Josie Peery was hit by a pitch. She stole second, went to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored as Higgins singled to right.
Culdesac took their first lead in the bottom of the third as they came up with 4 runs. The first 4 hitters all reached on an error, RBI single, RBI triple and a walk. The last two batters each scored from third by way of a wild pitch that gave Culdesac a 6-7 lead.
Prairie took the lead back in the fourth as Kylie Tidwell reached on a 1-out error. After a second out Ross beat out an infield single with Tidwell scoring. Remacle then tripled over the centerfielder’s head to score Ross and make it 8-7.
Uhlenkott faced only 4 hitters in the bottom of the fourth, stranding a runner at first after a 2-out single.
PFaith Uhlenkott sends a pitch towards the plate.rairie could have scored more than 1 in the fifth but baserunning problems cost them. Peery led off with a single but was called out for leaving first base before the pitch. Higgins then came up and crushed the ball to deep left. It appeared she had circled the bases for a homer, beating the throw home, but was called out for missing the plate and getting subsequently tagged out.
With 2 outs and the bases empty Poxleitner worked a walk and Kodie Tidwell followed with a single to right as Poxleitner came around to score.
With the score at 9-7, Prairie, Culdesac managed to tie it in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs, both after there were two outs. Prairie should have had a 1-2-3 inning but the third Culdesac hitter took a swing at a pitch in the dirt that got past the catcher and wound up at third. Culdesac, with a new life, strung together 3 singles to tie up the game.
Prairie quickly took back the lead as Ross walked and scored on Remacle’s second triple of the game. Hiler, running for Remacle, then scored on a groundout by Bruner to make it 11-9.
An error and a single led to a run for Culdesac in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the lead to 11-10.
In the top of the seventh Prairie added an insurance run. Uhlenkott beat out a 2-out infield single stole second. She then scored when Ross’ popup got dropped by the shortstop. Uhlenkott, running with the contact was able to score easily to make it 12-10.
Culdesac tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh. The leadoff hitter reached on an error but was forced out at second. The next batter hit a grounder to Kodie Tidwell in right with Tidwell able to throw her out at first as the baserunner went to second. That brought up Culdesac’s leadoff hitter who worked a 3-2 count then hit a short fly ball to right that Tidwell caught for what appeared to be the final out. Unfortunately another illegal pitch was called putting the batter on first with a walk. The other baserunner was sent back to second instead of advancing to third and we’re not sure why. Maybe it’s because the illegal pitch resulted in a walk. The next batter beat out an infield single to load the bases before the game finally ended on a popup to Kylie Tidwell at short.
Uhlenkott gave up 10 runs on 10 hits with 2 walks and 9 strikeouts.
Prairie had 13 hits led by Remacle who had 2 triples and 2 RBI. Higgins had a triple and 2 singles and an RBI. Uhlenkott had 2 singles and 2 RBI. Ross had 2 singles and an RBI. Bruner had a double and 2 RBI. Kodie Tidwell had a single and an RBI and Peery and Poxleitner each had a single.
Prairie is 1-0 both overall and in league play.
Their doubleheader against Kellogg at Lewiston set for Saturday, March 25, was called off due to weather.
Also their game at Lapwai on March 28 has been postponed and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on May 2 when Lapwai is scheduled to play at Cottonwood. No word yet on makeup dates for the Kendrick or Kamiah cancellations.
As it is their next game will be when they Culdesac on April 12 after Spring Break.
Prairie     2 3 1 2 1 2 1—12 13 3
Culdesac 2 1 4 0 2 1 0—10 10 5

A somewhat controversial play, at least for Prairie fans. Leah Higgins can be seen straddling the plate above. Right after that she appears to be sitting on at least part of the plate (photo at right) and hasn’t been tagged yet. She was called out, turning a home run into a triple, for missing the plate before the tag was applied.

Sarah Ross slides into second with a stolen base.

Alexis Hiler, courtesy running for catcher Sam Remacle, slides into second with a stolen base.

Third baseman Josie Peery gets ready to throw to first after fielding a grounder.

Second baseman Leah Higgins catches an infield pop fly.
