Lady Pirates take second at State
The Prairie Softball team reached the state championship game for the first time since 2013 but came up short against Horseshoe Bend and finished in second place in the tournament held at Lewiston’s Airport Park Friday and Saturday, May 19-20.
Prairie opened the tournament with an 11-10 win in 10 innings over Notus on Friday. On Saturday they faced Horesehoe Bend and lost 0-4. They earned another shot at the Mustangs with a 12-11 win over Potlatch, who had eliminated Genesee and Notus on Friday. In the championship game they lost 3-11.
Vs Notus
Notus was the team that gave Prairie both of their losses last year at State and it looked like they might do it again except for the never-say-die attitude of the Lady Pirates.Kodie Tidwell watches the ball head for the grass in left center on what turned out to be the game-winning hit against Notus.
Prairie scored first when Kylie Tidwell led off the bottom of the first with a single to left and stole second. Faith Uhlenkott then got robbed of at least a single when a catch was called on a fly ball to left that it appeared the only time the fielder had the ball in her mitt was when she picked it up off the ground after rolling over the ball. Sarah Ross then got the RBI on a single to left to make it 1-0.
Notus took the lead in the top of the second thanks to 4 hits and a pair of errors as they scored 4 runs, none of which were earned runs.
Prairie got back within 1 thanks to 3 extra-base hits in the bottom of the second. Josie Peery hit a 1-out triple to the left field corner. She scored on SierahPoxleitner’s groundout. Kodie Tidwell doubled to left and went to third on a wild pitch. Kylie Tidwell then tripled to the gap in right center to score Kodie but was then stranded at third.
In the top of the third Notus got a leadoff single but Prairie then turned a shortstop to second to first double play. A flyball out ended the inning.
Faith Uhlenkott again blanked Notus in the fourth despite committing an error.
Prairie tied it in the bottom of the fourth when Peery led off with a double. She scored on a 2-out, 2 base error by the left fielder on Kylie Tidwell’s deep fly ball.
Notus took back the lead in the fifth. A 1-out single followed by a pair of wild pitches set up a sacrifice fly that scored the go-ahead run.
Prairie tied it again in the bottom of the sixth when Poxleitner hit a 1-out double. After a second out, Kylie Tidwell again hit a deep fly ball that went off an outfielder’s glove for an error. This time it was the centerfielder and turned out to be a 3-base error as Poxleitner scored easily from second.
In the top of the seventh Uhlenkott surrendered her first walk of the game to lead off the inning. A dropped infield pop-up put two runners on base with no outs. After a strikeout a flyball to right fell for a 2-run double despite Kodie Tidwell almost making a spectacular catch. Another error resulted in another run. Prairie got out of the inning when Remacle threw out the baserunner trying to steal second.Notus led 8-5 going into the bottom of the seventh.
Notus gave Prairie some help to start their rally as Ross led off the inning by reaching on an error. Sam Remacle followed with a double to left with Ross going to third. Sydney Bruner was hit by a pitch to load the bases and bring the winning run to the plate. After an out, Peery singled to left to score both Ross and Alexis Hiler, who was courtesy running for Remacle. Peery wound up going all the way to third as the throw went to the plate. Peery then scored the tying run on Poxleitner’s groundout to short.
That put the game into extra innings where the last player to make an out starts on second.Notus got a leadoff single to score the go-ahead run but Prairie got out of the inning without further damage.
Kodie Tidwell started on second for the Pirates and scored on Uhlenkott’s 1 out single that dropped in behind the shortstop and in front of the outfielders. Ross followed with a single that moved Uhlenkott to second. Uhlenkott tagged and went to third on a deep flyball out by Remacle but the inning ended when Ross was called out for leaving early at first.
In the 9th, 2 wild pitches wound up scoring the go-ahead run for Notus. Notus also had a runner called out for leaving base early which helped Prairie get out of the inning.
Ross started on second for Prairie in the 9th. She went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an errant pickoff attempt to force another extra inning.
A great defensive play helped Prairie keep Notus scoreless in the 10th. A 1 out single put runners on first and third. A stolen base made it second and third. The batter then tried a bunt but it went only a foot in front of the plate. Remacle jumped on it quickly and threw out the baserunner at first and Bruner’s return throw nailed the runner trying to score from third. The runner from third did not get a good jump like you’d expect on a squeeze play.
Prairie now needed just 1 run to win it. With Josie Peery on second, Poxleitner was hit by a pitch leading off. Kodie Tidwell then singled to left center. Peery came flying around third, then stopped and went back as she realized she’d missed the bag. She was still able to beat the throw to the plate for the winning run.
Prairie had 14 hits in the game. Josie Peery was a home run short of a cycle with a single, double and a triple with 2 RBI. Remacle had a double and a triple. Kylie Tidwell had a single and a triple and an RBI. Kodie Tidwell had a single and a double and the game-winning RBI. Ross had a pair of singles and an RBI. Poxleitner had a double and 2 RBI. Uhlenkott had an RBI single and Bruner had a single.

Vs. Horseshoe Bend
One of the rare highlights in the first Horseshoe Bend game was a triple by Sam Remacle. In a semifinal game on Saturday morning Prairie ran into the best pitcher of the tournament in Horseshoe Bend’s Kate Renfrow. She shut out Genesee in their 10-0 win on Friday and then did the same to Prairie.
Uhlenkott matched zeros with Renfrow for 3 innings. Then Renfrow’s twin sister, Reilly Renfrow, who is also the catcher, split the gap in right center and circled the bases for an inside the park home run to give the Mustangs the lead.
Prairie looked to answer in the bottom of the fourth when Remacle tripled with 1 out but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.
The Mustangs added 3 runs in the sixth on 2 hits, a walk and 2 errors.
In the bottom of the sixth Prairie got two runners on for the first time in the game and Kylie Tidwell and Ross both singled but the runners were stranded after a flyball to center and a popup to short.
Prairie tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh as Peery and Poxleitner each had a 1-out single and Kylie Tidwell walked with 2 outs to load the bases. Uhlenkott tried to keep it going but her fly ball went right to the left fielder to end the game.
Prairie outhit Horseshoe Bend 6-4 in the game but for the most part scattered their hits. Kylie Tidwell had a pair of singles. Remacle had a triple and Ross, Peery and Poxleitner each had a single. Renfrow had 7 strikeouts in the game.
Uhlenkott gave up just 4 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Vs. Potlatch

Potlatch won the coin toss to determine the home team and it appeared that might be huge in determining the winner.Faith Uhlenkott with a first inning single against Potlatch that helped Prairie score 3 in the inning.
Prairie started well as the first four hitters all singled to open the game with 3 of them scoring. Kylie Tidwell singled down the left field like and stole second. Uhlenkott singled up the middle to score Tidwell. Ross beat out an infield single toward third and Remacle singled up the middle to score both Uhlenkott and Ross.
Potlatch answered back with a run in their half of the first and 2 more in the second to tie the game at 3-3.
In the third Prairie scored twice to retake the lead thanks to a couple of Logger errors. Ross singled to left to lead off the inning and got all the way to third when the leftfielder mishandled the ball. Remacle then reached on an error by the second baseman as Ross scored. Remacle went to second on the play. Bruner then singled up the middle to score Hiler, who was running for Remacle. India Peery getting a rare chance to hit, doubled to center but Bruner was called out at the plate trying to score from first on the play.

Uhlenkott then pitched a pair of 1-2-3 innings as it was tied at 9-9 heading into the 7th inning.
In the 7th Kylie Tidwell worked a walk with 1 out. Uhlenkott singled up the middle. Ross then doubled to left to score both runners and Remacle singled to right center to score Ross and make it 12-9.
Potlatch wasn’t done though as their leadoff hitter tripled to right and tried to stretch it to a home run. Kodie Tidwell threw to Leah Higgins who relayed the ball to Remacle at the plate and the runner was called out. That was a huge play as the next hitter doubled and the one after that hit a 2-run homer to cut Prairie’s lead to just 1 run.
