Misty Johnson, the River Guide
Cottonwood’s Misty Johnson has been working as a river guide for Holiday River Expeditions.
She came to Idaho from central Oregon in 1996 to work as a horseback guide. The company also owned a rafting company in Riggins. She was lucky enough to train on the oars on the Salmon River that year and fell in love with it.
She knew she was hooked and hasn’t lived more than an hour from the Salmon River since.
Some of her favorite things about being a river guide include: the beauty of the water and the outdoor lifestyle, sleeping on her boat out under the stars, unplugging from everyday stress and helping her clients unplug from their stressors.
Her favorite river trip is the Main Salmon 5 or 6 day trip from Cork Creek (end of road up by Salmon, ID) to Carey Creek (end of road upriver from Riggins.) “We get to visit Buckskin Bill’s Museum, Polly Bemis Ranch, float by Mackay Bar and many other historic sites,” said Johnson.
“I met my husband of 15 years in Cottonwood. I have 2 teen children now, who share my love of the outdoors and our beautiful river. My kids have been on several river trips with me on all stretches of the Salmon River,” continued Johnson.
“The Salmon River country is some of the most beautiful I have ever seen. If you want to lose yourself in the great outdoors, go with the flow, connect with nature, come float with us on the River of No Return,” concluded Johnson.
She also guides on the Owyhee River in southeastern Idaho. The Owyhee River is one you can only float in flood stage, usually in April.
