Lady Pirates win season opener
The Prairie Lady Pirates opened their 2017 volleyball season with a league win at Kamiah Thursday, August 24 by scoresSydney Bruner had her jump serve working, especially in the first game. of 25-9, 24-26, 25-16 and 25-17.
They got off to a slow start in the opening game but that turned around when Sydney Bruner went to the service line.  She took over with the score at 3-3 and jump served 13 straight points which included 8 aces. Leah Higgins added 3 kills and Jordyn Higgins and Theresa Wemhoff each added a kill. Kamiah tried to throw her off by using both of their timeouts during the run but Bruner was unaffected. Her run finally ended when Bruner herself missed low on a spike from the back row.
Prairie outscored Kamiah 9-6 the rest of the game for a lopsided win. Angela Wemhoff added 2 service aces and Kristyna Krogh added 2 more.
Prairie did not carry that momentum into the second game as they fell behind 1-5.  They rallied back to take the lead though on a 6-point service run by Krogh that included 4 aces with Theresa Wemhoff adding 2 kills for a 9-6 lead.
Prairie extended the lead to 15-7 after a 4-point run by Bruner but then things started to come unraveled.
Kamiah put together a 6-point run that tied the game at 16-16 before Madison Pecarovich scored on a dig .
Kamiah finally took the lead at 18-19 and never let Prairie take it back although the Pirates were able to tie the score 5 times, the last at 24-24.
Leah Higgins scored a kill to ward off Kamiah’s first game-point chance to tie it at 24-24 but a missed served gave Kamiah a second game point chance and this time they cashed it in.
Prairie looked to retake control of the match in the third game as they jump out to leads of 4-0, 7-1 and 12-2. Their biggest lead came at 17-4 after a 4-point service run by Krogh that saw Alexis Hiller score a pair of kills and Pecarovich and Angela Wemhoff each add another kill.
Kamiah was able to rally back with 18-10 after 3 straight aces but a foot fault on the next serve ended that run.
Prairie got to game point at 24-13 after a kill by Leah Higgins but Kamiah fought off game point 3 times before Leah scored the game-winner on a first touch spike at the net.
The fourth game was a back and forth battle until late in the game.
The lead changed hands 3 times early on. Once Prairie took the lead at 9-8 on an ace by Pecarovich, they never let Kamiah lead again although the Kubs managed to tie the score at 11 and 13.
A missed served by Kamiah gave Prairie the lead for good at 14-13 but they still couldn’t break free of the Kubs until Angela Wemhoff took the serve with the score at 18-16.
Jordyn Higgins scored on a tip, Angela added 2 aces, Hiler scored 2 kills and Angela added another ace to get Prairie to match point at 24-16. Kamiah scored a kill that just caught the back line but Prairie then ended it when Theresa Wemhoff’s spike was misplayed for a carry violation.
Leah Higgins scored 20 kills in the match which included a pair of blocks. She also had 5 aces. Pecarovich had 24 assists, 6 kills and 6 aces. Theresa Wemhoff had 8 kills and 2 assists. Hiler had 7 kills and 2 assists. Jordyn Higgins had 6 kills and 2 assists. Angela Wemhoff had 5 kills 1 assist and 6 aces. Krogh had 4 kills, 16 assists and 6 aces. Bruner had 10 aces and 1 assist.
Prairie is 1-0 in both league and overall.
The JV match was similar to the varsity in that Prairie dominated the first game, stumbled in the second then won the match by scores of 25-6, 21-25, 15-11.
In the opening game Sabrina Lustig served Prairie into the lead as she took over and 3-2 and served 5 straight points, 2 on aces.
The lead stayed around 5 to 7 points until Hope Schwartz scored a kill that put her on the service line at 14-6. Schwartz served out the rest of the game, 11 straight points, 6 on aces. Anna Vinsova added 2 kills and a stuff block and Madison Hinkelman and Ashton Landers each added a kill in that final run.
There were several lineup changes for the second game and this group didn’t gel quite as well, falling behind early.
Vinsova had a 4-point service run that turned a 9-9 tie into a 13-9 lead.
Kamiah came back though and eventually took back the lead in the middle of a 5-point service run and never gave it back.
In the decisive third match Prairie went back to the first game lineup and Schwartz made it 13 straight service points with a 2-0 start before finally missing a serve.
Kamiah bounced back to tie the game at 5-5 and again at 6-6. A missed served put Emma Gehring on the service line and 3 straight aces gave Prairie some separation.
Kamiah cut the lead back down to 2 at 12-10 but a kill by Lustig and an ace by Schwartz got Prairie to match point at 14-10.
A net violation gave Kamiah a point but Lustig scored the match-winner kill off a set from Schwartz.
