Lady Pirates lose two matchesr
The Prairie Lady Pirates got swept by the two league favorites in home volleyball matches last week.
On Tuesday, August 29 they lost to Genesee 20-25, 22-25 and 22-25. Then on Thursday, August 31 they got blitzed by Troy 12-25, 16-25 and 16-25.
Vs. Genesee
The match against Genesee didn’t feel like a 3-game sweep even though it was as all 3 games were close and hard-fought.Jordyn Higgins makes a pass against Genesee. Behind her is her cousin Leah Higgins.
In the opening game Prairie fell behind early on but took their first lead with Jordyn Higgins serving. Angela Wemhoff scored a back row kill for the sideout to make it 7-10 and Higgins served 4 straight points for an 11-10 lead. She had 3 aces while Leah Higgins scored a kill on a tip.
The game stayed within a couple of points with Genesee tying it only to have Prairie retake the lead until Genesee tied it at 16-16 on a bad serve by Prairie. Genesee then scored 4 straight service points to pull out to a 4-point lead.
Prairie twice cut the lead to 3 at 17-20 and 18-21 but Genesee was able to pull out the 5-point win.
The second game saw Prairie lead early on by a couple points with Genesee tying the score at 3, 5 and 7.
Genesee finally took their first lead at 7-8 and pushed the lead to 8-13.
Madison Pecarovich served 3 straight aces to cut the lead to 12-13 only to have Genesee score the sideout to keep them from tying it.
Prairie managed to tie the score finally at 15 and again at 17 and 20 but were unable to retake the lead as Genesee held on to win by 3.
The third game saw 4 lead changes with Prairie taking their final lead of the game at 12-11 on an ace by Pecarovich.
After Genesee took back the lead, Prairie managed to tie it at 13 and 14 but were unable to take back the lead.
Genesee led by as many as 5 at 16-21 only to have Prairie rally back within 2 at 22-24 before giving up the match point.
For the match Leah Higgins had 11 kills, which included 2 blocks, plus an assist and an ace. Angela Wemhoff had 8 kills, 2 assists and an ace. Josie Peery had 9 kills, which included 3 blocks. Kristyna Krogh had 6 kills and 13 assists. Theresa Wemhoff had 4 kills, which included a block, plus 2 assists. Pecarovich had 2 kills, 13 assists and 5 aces. Jordyn Higgins had 2 kills and 3 aces.
The JV team won their match 2 games to 1 by scores of 25-21, 19-25, 15-13.
Madison Hinkelman served a pair of aces early on for a 5-1 lead only to have Genesee come back and take the lead at 8-9. Genesee eventually led by as many as 5 at 12-17 before Prairie started to rally.
At 13-18, Hope Schwartz tipped the ball on second touch for a sideout. Ashton Landers served Prairie to within 1 point with 2 aces plus a kill by India Peery.
After each team bricked a serve, Peery took over on the service line and served Prairie to a 22-19 lead. She had an ace and Sabrina Lustig had 3 straight kills.
After trading sideouts for awhile, Prairie got to game point on a hit by Landers that led to a Genesee hitting error. Hinkelman then scored the game winner off of a Genesee block attempt.
In the second game Prairie quickly fell behind 0-6 and spent the rest of the game trying to dig out of the hole.
They were able to fight back within 1 point at 18-19 after a tip by Landers but couldn’t get over the hump as Genesee then outscored them 1-6 to win the second game.
With the third game being a deciding game, Prairie fell behind 2-5 early on and trailed until Hinkelman scored a kill to make it 9-10 and send Schwartz to the service line. 
A kill by Landers tied the game and a kill by Lustig put Prairie ahead for the first time since leading 2-1. Hinkelman and Landers each added a kill to make it 13-10.
Genesee got back within 1 at 13-12 before Lustig scored a kill to get to match point. Genesee fought off one match point before Schwartz scored the match winning kill when she was able to push the ball deep past the defenders to the back line.
The C team also won their match, winning the first two games before dropping the third.
Vs. Troy
Troy put on a dominating performance against the Pirates led by sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Kwate. Kwate is listed at 5’8” but has great leaping ability and a lot of Josie Peery spikes the ball against Troy.power and accuracy in her right arm. She killed Prairie all evening as Troy set her up no matter where she was on the court for her power spikes. If that wasn’t enough she has a devastating jump serve as well and rarely missed with it.
Prairie actually started the game well, scoring the first 3 points on an ace by Pecarovich, a block by Leah Higgins and a Troy hitting error for a 3-0 lead. Troy then scored the next 7 points to take the lead for good.
After trading sideouts Prairie got their first taste of Kwate’s jump serve for 2 aces. After a timeout, Sydney Bruner was able to dig one of Kwate’s rockets and got a kill out of it.
Troy kept their lead and added to it by keeping Prairie from scoring on serve.
Prairie’s final point of the game came on a block by Leah Higgins to make it 12-20. Troy then got the side out and Kwate served out the game with 3 of the 4 points being aces.
Troy scored the first 2 points of the second game but Prairie was able to come back and take a 5-3 lead on a bricked serve, net foul, kill by Leah Higgins and an ace by Angela Wemhoff.
Prairie actually held onto the lead for much of the game, taking their biggest lead at 13-10.
Troy took the lead back at 14-15 but Prairie was able to tie it on a bump by Pecarovich.
From that point on though it was all Troy as they finished the game on a 1-10 run with Prairie’s only point coming on a tip by Theresa Wemhoff.
In the third game Prairie fell behind 0-2 but a block by Angela Wemhoff followed by 3 service points from Wemhoff gave prairie a 4-2 lead. She had an ace and Leah Higgins had a pair of kills.
Prairie also led by 2 at 5-3 on a kill by Jordyn Higgins and 6-4 on a back row kill by Leah Higgins.
Troy then scored 4 of the next 5 points to take the lead for good.
Prairie was still in the game at 10-14 when Kwate decided to take over. First she scored the sideout kill and then jumpserved 7 points in a row, 6 of them aces, to put the game out of reach at 10-22.
For the match Leah Higgins had 12 kills, including 2 blocks, with 2 assists and 2 aces. Peery had 8 kills. Angela Wemhoff had 4 kills, including a block, plus 2 assists and 2 aces. Bruner had 3 kills and 2 assists. Jordyn Higgins had 3 kills. Krogh had 14 assists and 2 aces. Pecarovich had 1 kill, 5 assists and 1 ace. Theresa Wemhoff had 1 kill.
Prairie is now 1-2 in both league and overall on the season.
The JV team lost their match 25-18, 9-25, 7-15.
In the opening game Prairie fell behind 0-5 but bounced back after Troy bricked a serve. Schwartz served 6 straight for Prairie to put them in the lead at 7-5. She had an ace while Hinkelman and Ellea Poxleitner each had a pair of kills and Landers added another kill.
Troy was able to tie it a 9-9 but a kill by Schwartz put Halle Klapprich on the service line. She served 3 aces and added a back row kill to make it 14-9.
Troy came back again to tie the score at 15 but a dig that fell in for a sideout put Emma Gehring on the service line for 3 more points. She had an ace and Anna Vinsova added 2 kills for a 19-15 lead.
6 of the next 7 points came on sideouts with Lustig serving an ace for the only non-sideout point as Prairie led 23-18. Peery then served out the game with Gehring scoring a kill and Peery ending it with an ace.
In the second game it was close until at 4-5, Troy scored a sideout and then got 11 straight points from junior Rozi Nelson that gave the Trojans a 4-17 lead. That put the game out of reach as Prairie lost big.
For game 3 Prairie won the toss and got to serve first but Troy scored a sideout and came back with 6 more points for a 0-7 lead.
Landers scored a kill and Gehring added another but Troy then got another sideout and scored 4 more for a 2-12 lead.
Troy then cruised to win game 3 and the match.
The C team lost all 3 of their games
