Lady Pirates rally to beat Potlatch
The Prairie Lady Pirates dropped the first two sets against Potlatch and were looking at a third straight league loss before rallying back to win in 5 games Tuesday, Sept. 5 at Cottonwood.
Scores were 20-25, 23-25, 25-13, 25-18 and 15-9.Josie Peery looks to tip the ball at the net against Potlatch. Angela Wemhoff watches.
The match scheduled for Lapwai on Thursday, Sept. 7, was postponed to Monday, Oct. 2 due to the Lapwai football team’s game being moved up to Thursday so they could play Troy in the Kibbie Dome.
Prairie started the match well as Angela Wemhoff, Sydney Bruner and Kristyna Krogh served them to a 10-5 lead.
Their biggest lead of the game was 6 points at 12-6 and again at 13-7. Potlatch then started their rally.
The Loggers took their first lead since scoring the game’s first point at 15-16. After 6 straight sideouts, Potlatch finally scored a service point to make it a 2-point lead. Prairie twice cut it to 1 but at 20-21 Potlatch scored a side out and then served out the game.
In the second game Prairie fell behind 3-8 and had to battle from behind the whole way.
They got back within 2 points at 13-15, then slipped back to a 5 point deficit at 14-19.
At 18-22, Krogh pushed the ball deep to the corner over the defense for a sideout. Madison Pecarovich then servedup an ace and Josie Peery followed with 2 kills and a block to give Prairie their first lead of the game at 23-22.
Potlatch was able to score the sideout though and then served 2 aces to win 23-25.
Having to win 3 straight, Prairie was facing their first loss ever to Potlatch at the 1-A level and it was in the 1990’s the last time they lost to Potlatch at all.
Wemhoff and Bruner served Prairie to an 8-2 lead in the third game. Potlatch rallied back within 2 at 9-7 but another deep push by Krogh for a kill put Jordyn Higgins on the service line. Jordyn responded with a 6 point service run that included 2 aces with Pecarovich, Krogh and Wemhoff adding kills and Leah Higgins scoring on a block for a 16-7 lead.
Prairie played strong defense the rest of the way, siding out all but 1 Potlatch serve.
At 21-13, after that 1 Potlatch service point, Bruner sent a ball over from the back row that led to a 4-hit violation. Krogh then took over at the service line with 2 aces followed by a game-winning kill by Leah Higgins.
Prairie led most of the fourth game but couldn’t shake loose of Potlatch until the end.
With 3 straight aces, Wemhoff helped serve Prairie to a 7-3 lead only to have Potlatch score the next 4 and tie it at 7-7.
Prairie took back the lead but Potlatch again tied the game at 11. A kill by Leah Higgins broke the tie and Prairie held onto the lead the rest of the game.
A kill each by Wemhoff and Leah Higgins put Prairie up by 3 but Potlatch pulled back within 1 at 14-13.
It went on like that for a bit, Prairie would extend the lead only to have Potlatch rally back. The final time came at 19-18. At that point Krogh pounded a spike that hit the top of the net and caromed off for a kill. She then went to the service line with Leah Higgins scoring a kill followed by 3 aces from Krogh. Jordyn Higgins got the game-winning kill to tie the match at 2 games each.
Potlatch scored first in the winner-take-all fifth game and also led at 1-2. A free ball by Jordyn Higgins scored for Prairie and put Bruner on the service line. A kill by Jordyn Higgins and an ace by Bruner gave Prairie the lead for good.
Potlatch stayed close for awhile, cutting the lead to 7-6 with an ace but a kill by Leah Higgins sent her cousin Jordyn to the service line. Jordyn Higgins then had her second solid service run of the match with 5 straight points that included 3 aces to put Prairie in control. Leah Higgins added a kill and a block as Prairie took a 13-6 lead.
Potlatch got within 5 at 14-9 but Peery then scored the match-winning kill.
For the match we had Leah Higgins with 14 kills, which included 2 blocks, plus 2 assists. Angela Wemhoff had 14 kills, 2 assists and 6 aces. Peery had 14 kills, which included 1 block, plus 2 assists. Jordyn Higgins had 13 kills, 1 assists and 5 aces. Krogh had 9 kills, which included a block, plus 18 assists and 8 aces. Pecarovich had 3 kills, 26 assists and 3 aces. Bruner had 2 kills, 1 assist and 6 aces. Theresa Wemhoff had 2 kills.
Prairie is now 2-2 in both league play and overall.
The JV team won both of their games, 25-13 and 25-19.
The opening game was close until Emma Gehring served a pair of aces and Sabrina Lustig added a kill for an 11-4 lead.
After a couple of sideouts Anna Vinsova served 2 aces and Madison Hinkelman added a couple of kills to make it 16-5 and Prairie pretty much cruised to a big win after that.
In the second game Prairie fell behind 1-6 and then 4-11 but fought their way back into it.
India Peery took over on the service line with Prairie still down 11-14 and served the Pirates into a 15-14 lead with a couple of aces while Ellea Uhlenkott  and Sierra McWilliams each added a kill.
Potlatch answered by taking a 16-18 lead. At that point Lustig scored a kill to put Ashton Landers on the service line. Landers served 3 straight aces to give Prairie a 20-18 lead.
After a trade of sideouts Gehring took over on the service line and served out the match. She had 2 aces while Landers and Ellea Poxleitner each added a kill.
