Lady Pirates have busy week
The Prairie Lady Pirates had a busy week. They won their only league match of the week, sweeping C.V. 25-16, 25-10 and 25-12 at Kooskia Tuesday, Sept. 12. They then lost a 5-set match at Orofino 25-22, 20-25, 19-25, 25-22, 3-15 Thursday, Sept. 14. Finally on Saturday, Sept. 16 they took second at the Grangeville Invitational Tournament. In pool play they beat Nezperce, Kamiah and Summit. In the championship bracket they beat Summit again before losing to Salmon River, who has now won this tournament 2 years in a row.
At C.V.
Prairie had little trouble with the Lady Rams as they opened up leads of 7-1 and 13-3 in the opening game. C.V. managed to rally back within 7 at 19-12 but Prairie pushed the lead back to 10 and wound up winning by 9. Josie Peery spikes the ball at C.V.
Jordyn Higgins had the biggest serving run of the game with 5 straight aces to take the score from 8-3 to 13-3.
C.V. actually scored the first point in the second game but that was their only lead as Angela Wemhoff served Prairie to a 4-1 lead as Josie Peery scored a pair of kills and Wemhoff added a back row kill.
Sydney Bruner added 2 jump serve aces while Kristyna Krogh added 3 to push the lead to 12-3.
Alexis Shears came off the bench late in the game to serve 4 straight points, 3 of them aces with Theresa Wemhoff adding a kill that pushed the lead to 23-9.
Peery served the game-winning ace.
In the final game Bruner served 5 straight aces to turn a slim 4-3 lead into a 9-3 lead.
Alexis Hiler added 5 aces over two turns at the service line covering 7 serves.
For the match Peery had 13 kills and an ace. Leah Higgins had 6 kills, including a block, 1 assist and 1 ace. Angela Wemhoff had 4 kills and 4 aces. Madison Pecarovich had 3 kills, 11 assists and 2 aces. Jordyn Higgins had 3 kills and 5 aces. Krogh had 2 kills, 16 assists and 5 aces. Theresa Wemhoff had 2 kills and 2 aces. Alexis Hiler had 1 kill and 8 aces. Bruner had 7 aces and Alexis Shears had 3 aces.
The JV team also won all three games by scores of 25-23, 25-21 and 15-2.
The first game saw Prairie fall behind 2-6 buy they came back to tie it on a bricked serve followed by a 3-point service run by India Peery. She had an ace while Emma Gehring scored a pair of kills.
Prairie took back the lead with Anna Vinsova serving. She had 2 aces with Sierra McWilliams and Sabrina Lustig each adding a kill as Prairie took an 11-7 lead.
Prairie held on to the lead until C.V. rallied to take a 19-20 lead. A kill by Ellea Poxleitner quickly tied it and Prairie took back the lead on a pair of aces by Vinsova.
C.V. took back the lead at 22-23 but a kill by Lustig tied it. Then with McWilliams serving, Lustig added another kill and Gehring then scored the game winner.
In the second game prairie got off to a hot start as Madison Hinkelman served 6 straight points for an 8-1 lead. She had 4 aces with Ashton Landers and Vinsova each adding a kill.
Prairie maintained a solid lead until late in the game when C.V. rallied to pull within 2 at 23-21. At that point Hinkelman scored a sideout kill and with Lustig serving, Vinsova scored the match-winning kill.
The third game was all Peery at the service line. Hope Schwartz scored a sideout kill to tie the game at 2-2 and send Peery back to serve.
C.V. never got to serve again as Peery served out the match. Of her 13 straight points, 11 were aces with Hinkelman and Halle Klapprich scoring kills for the other two points.
The C team also won all 3 games.
At Orofino
It was two well-matched teams in the match at Orofino and it showed in the 5-game result.

Prairie finally opened up a lead when Angela Wemhoff went to the service line after a block by Peery scored a sideout to make it 15-13. 3 aces by Wemhoff plus 2 kills by Leah Higgins and another block by Peery made it 21-13.
Orofino rallied back within 23-20 before Angela Wemhoff scored a sideout kill to get to game point. Orofino then scored a sideout of their own and an ace to cut the lead to 2 before bricking a serve to give Prairie the game.
The second game saw Orofino dominate early on as they jumped out to leads of 2-8 and 3-11.
Prairie managed to rally back within 3 at 18-21 after 2 aces by Leah Higgins and a kill by Peery, but Orofino held on to even the match.
Orofino again jumped out to a 2-8 lead in the third game but Prairie was able to rally back to tie it at 10 and again at 12 but was unable to take the lead.
Orofino got to game point at 16-24, their biggest lead of the game, before Prairie rallied with 3 straight points before a missed serve ended it giving Orofino a 1 game to 2 lead.
Prairie took the early lead in game 4 with Krogh serving 2 aces for a 7-3 lead.
Orofino got back within 2 points several times but Prairie was able to hold them off and force a fifth game.
After fighting to force a fifth game it appeared Prairie had nothing left as Orofino dominated from the start leading 1-8, 2-14 and finally 3-15.
For the match, Angela Wemhoff had 16 kills, 2 assists and 4 aces. Leah Higgins had 14 kills, including a block, with 1 assists and 4 aces. Peery had 11 kills, including 3 blocks. Pecarovich had 4 kills 18 assists and 1 ace. Hiler had 5 kills, including a block, and 1 ace. Krogh had 3 kills, 19 assists and 6 aces. Jordyn Higgins had 1 kill, 1 assist and 2 aces. Bruner had 2 assists and 2 aces.
Prairie won the JV match in 2 games, 25-10 and 25-22.
The opening game was close until Landers took over at the service line with the score tied at 9-9. She served Prairie to a 16-9 lead with 2 aces and 2 kills each from Lustig and Gehring plus another by Schwartz.
After a trade of sideouts Geh-ring went to the service line and served out the game collecting 5 aces with Lustig and Hinkelman each adding a kill.
The second game saw Prairie take an early lead and this one stayed close to the end. Orofino led just once, at 1-2 and the game was tied just 3 times, at 1, 2 and 18.
Orofino rallied from a 17-10 deficit to tie it at 18 but Vinsova scored a kill to keep them from taking the lead.
Poxleitner then served 3 aces with a kill added in by Hinkelman to make it 23-18.
Orofino got back within 2 at 24-22 before Schwartz scored the match-winning kill.
The Prairie C team won their match in 2 games to 1.
Grangeville Tournament
At the Grangeville Tournament, Prairie swept their way through their pool defeating Nezperce 25-18, 25-10; Kamiah 25-15, 25-15 and Summit 25-14, 25-13. That earned Prairie a bye through the quarterfinals and they wound up facing Summit, who had upset Logos, again in the semifinals. Prairie again beat Summit 25-18, 25-21.
That put them up against Salmon River in the championship. Salmon River had also gone through without losing a game. The Savages wound up dominating Prairie 14-25, 17-25 for the championship.
Vs. Nezperce
Prairie started the day against a solid Nezperce team that would wind up second in the pool. Prairie took a 2-0 lead in the opening game on a kill by Angela Wemhoff and an ace by Pecarovich and never trailed.Leah Higgins makes a block against Kamiah at the Grangeville Tournament.
Nezperce kept mostly within a couple points until Pecaorvich’s second service turn. She had an ace, Angela Wemhoff had 2 kills and Peery added another as Prairie pushed their lead to 16-10.
Prairie led 19-11 after 2 more kills by Peery but Nezperce was able to rally back within 3 at 21-18. 
At that point the Indians missed a serve and never got the chance to serve again as Krogh served out the game. A kill by Theresa Wemhoff, an ace and a block by Leah Higgins accounted for the final 3 points.
In the second game Krogh had a service run of 7 points that broke open a close game. She took over at 5-3 and had 3 aces with Peery scoring a block and Angela Wemhoff a kill as Prairie took a 12-3 lead.
Prairie sided out every Nezperce serve the rest of the game as they eventually won by 15.
Vs. Kamiah
In their second match of the day against Kamiah, the Kubs took a 1-2 lead, but that was to be their only lead of the opening game.
Angela Wemhoff served a pair of aces to give Prairie a 4-2 lead and a 3-point service run each by Bruner and Krogh extended the lead to 12-5.
Kamiah got back within 3 at 14-11 and kept the deficit around 3-5 points until Bruner scored a kill on a service dig to put Krogh on the service line again. Krogh served out the game with 1 ace plus a kill each by Leah Higgins, Theresa Wemhoff, Angela Wemhoff and Bruner.
In the second game Kamiah took an early 2-5 lead. Prairie rallied back but Kamiah still held a lead as late as 9-10. A bricked serve plus a kill by Hiler and an ace by Angela Wemhoff put Prairie ahead.
Kamiah tied it again at 13 but a kill by Peery gave Prairie the lead for good.
Vs. Summit
Prairie closed out pool play against Summit Academy. Summit took an early 1-4 lead on a couple of aces by Lexi Currier but Leah Higgins scored a sideout kill and Angela Wemhoff served Prairie into the lead with 2 aces plus a kill by Peery.
Prairie did a good job of siding out Summit’s serves as Summit scored only 2 points on serve the rest of the game, both with Lucy Osborne serving. 
Summit didn’t allow Prairie any big service runs but enough 2 and 3 points runs allowed Prairie to pull away and win by 11. Pecarovich and Bruner each had a 3-point run with a pair of aces each.
In the second game Prairie jumped out to a 5-0 lead as they sided out Currier’s first serve and Pecarovich served 4 straight. She had an ace with Jordyn Higgins adding 2 kills and Krogh another.
Summit was able to get back within 3 a couple of times but could get no closer. 
A 3-point service run by Bruner pushed the lead to 7 and a later 3 points run by Jordyn Higgins pushed the lead to 9 at 20-11.
Hiler had a pair of aces to make it 23-12 and after each side missed a served, Krogh served an ace to end the match.
Vs. Summit-Semifinals
Prairie had to play Summit again in the semifinals after the Patriots knocked Logos out of the tournament.
Angela Wemhoff served 4 straight points to give Prairie an early 6-1 lead in the opening game and Bruner served 3 straight aces with Leah Higgins, Theresa Wemhoff and Krogh each adding a kill as Prairie took a 13-2 lead.
Summit was able to fight their way back into the game with a 1-7 run as Claira Osborne served 2 points and Currier added 4 more that pulled the Patriots within 18-14.  4 points was as close as Summit would get though as Prairie held on to win.
The second game was more competitive throughout as Summit led early at 1-3. Prairie answered with 5 straight for a 6-3 lead behind Jordyn Higgins’ serving.
Summit again rallied and took back the lead at 8-9 and again at 9-10. 
A kill by Jordyn Higgins sent Hiler to the service line and she had 3 aces with Jordyn Higgins and Peery each adding a kill for a 15-10 Prairie lead.
Summit never led again although they were able to pull within 1 at 21-20 and again at 22-21 before Prairie scored the final 3 points to end the match.
Championship vs. Salmon River
In the championship match Prairie faced a well-coached, very athletic team in Salmon River.
The Savages jumped out to leads of 0-6 and 2-13 in the opening game.
Prairie was able to get as close as 4 points at 11-15, Salmon River then scored the next 7 to put the first game away.
Prairie took a 4-1 lead in the second game and still led at 8-6 before Salmon River put together a string of 5 straight points to take the lead for good.
Prairie is now 7-4 on the season and 3-2 in league play. This week they play at Genesee on Thursday, the Border Battle Tournament at Pomeroy on Saturday and then return home for the “Think Pink” match against Lapwai, Tuesday, Sept. 26.
