Lady Pirates take third at District
The Prairie Lady Pirates swept Potlatch on Tuesday, Oct. 17 and then lost a five-set match to Genesee on Thursday, Oct. 19 to wind up in third place at District.
Vs Potlatch
In loser-out action on Tuesday Prairie swept the Loggers 25-16, 25-14, 25-22.
Prairie started slowly as Potlatch jumped out to a 1-4 lead in the opening game. Prairie fought back to tie at 5-5 on a tip by Theresa Wemhoff and then took the lead on 4 straight aces by Leah Higgins.Kristyna Krogh serves against Potlatch at District.
Potlatch wasn’t done though as they rallied to take a 13-14 lead before bricking a serve.
Angela Wemhoff then served 4 straight aces and Mattie Pecarovich added a kill for a 19-14 lead.
Potlatch got back within 3 at 19-16 but a point by Angela Wemhoff on a free ball after Jordyn Higgins made a save on an errant pass scored the sideout. Jordyn then served out the game. She started with an ace, Sydney Bruner scored on a free ball from the back row and Leah Higgins then scored 3 straight kills to end the game.
The second game saw another slow start as Potlatch led 4-5 but a block by Josie Peery tied it and Kristyna Krogh served Prairie into the lead with a 4-point run. Krogh scored on a tip and Peery scored 2 kills and a block for a 10-5 lead.
Potlatch was able to close within 2 at 13-11 but 3 kills by Leah Higgins and an ace by Jordyn Higgins pushed the lead to 6 at 17-11.
Leah Higgins served a couple of aces to get to 20-12 and Krogh served the final 4 points. She had one ace while Angela Wemhoff had 2 kills and Peery scored the game-winning kill.
In the deciding third game Prairie never trailed and the score was tied only twice, at 0-0 and 3-3. A bricked served by Potlatch broke the second tie and Leah Higgins served 2 aces and Peery added a kil for a 7-3 lead.
Bruner had a 4-point service run to push the lead to 15-7 as she had an ace while Leah Higgins had 2 kills and Angela Wemhoff 1.
From there the game saw a lot of sideouts until Prairie got to match point at 24-17 on a back row kill by Alexis Shears.
Potlatch then scored a sideout and was able to scored 4 more points before Leah Higgins won a joust at the net for match point.
For the match Leah Higgins had 16 kills and 8 aces. Angela Wemhoff had 9 kills, 20 assists and 6 aces. Peery had 8 kills, including 2 blocks and 1 assist. Pecarovich had 4 kills and 2 assists. Theresa Wemhoff had 3 kills, 2 assists and an ace. Krogh had 1 kill, 14 assists and 1 ace. Jordyn Higgins had 1 kill, 2 assists and 3 aces. Bruner and Alexis Hiler each had 1 kill and 1 ace. Shears had 1 kill.
Vs. Genesee
With northern Idaho allowed just 2 teams to State this year instead of the 3 of the past few years, Prairie knew they would have to get past either Troy or Genesee to make it to State for a fourth straight season.
Saturday they came up 1 point short against Troy and on Thursday they again came up just short, this time against Genesee, losing 21-25, 25-21, 26-24, 22-25, 13-15.
The whole match was a back and forth affair with neither team able to build much of a lead.
Genesee led most of the first game although Prairie led briefly several times at 3-2, 10-9 and 14-13.
At 14-13, Genesee scored a sideout on a missed served and then Courtney Burt served 3 straight aces.
Genesee led by as many as 4 at 15-19 but Prairie closed within 1 on a tip by Angela Wemhoff, an ace by Sydney Bruner and a kill by Jordyn Higgins that made it 18-19. Genesee was able to hold them off for the win.
In the second game Prairie took a 10-7 lead after an ace by Theresa Wemhoff and 2 kills by Josie Peery but Genesee tallied back with 4 straight points to retake the lead.

A 2-hit violation against Prairie gave Genesee back the lead but Peery tied it on a kill. Bruner was then able to serve out the game. She had 2 aces, Angela Wemhoff scored a kill and Bruner ended it with another ace.
In the third game Angela Wemhoff served Prairie to a 3-0 lead with 2 aces plus a kill by Leah Higgins.
Genesee came right back though to tie it and later led by as many as 4 at 12-16.
A kill by Leah Higgins and 4 service points by Jordyn Higgins gave Prairie a 17-16 lead.
Genesee came back and took a 21-23 lead late in the game. 2 kills by Angela Wemhoff tied the game at 23-23 but a missed spike gave Genesee a game-point chance.
Angela Wemhoff scored a sideout kill and then with Bruner serving, scored another kill on a tip. Leah Higgins then won a joust at the net to give Prairie the game.
In the fourth game, Prairie fell behind early and Genesee led by as many as 8 points at 8-16.
Prairie still trailed 15-21 when Jordyn Higgins scored a sideout kill. 
That sent Bruner to the service line, who had served out the two wins. She was able to get Prairie within 1 at 20-21 on an ace, 2 kills by Leah Higgins and a kill by Angela Wemhoff. A 2-hit violation ended that run and Genesee held on to tie up the match at 2 games apiece.
In the fifth game Jordyn Higgins served 2 aces and Madison Pecarovich added a kill for an early 5-2 lead. 
Prairie held the lead until Genesee took it at 10-11.
A kill by Angela Wemhoff tied it and she served an ace to put Prairie back on top. A missed served tied it at 12-12 and Genesee took a 12-13 lead on a missed spike.
A sideout kill by Leah Higgins tied it at 13 setting up a pivotal point. Unfortunately Prairie missed the serve to give Genesee a match point chance and then hit a spike just long to end it.
For the match Leah Higgins had 24 kills, including 2 blocks, with 2 assists and 2 aces. Angela Wemhoff had 19 kills, 25 assists and 6 aces. Peery had 12 kills, including 2 blocks. Theresa Wemhoff had 7 kills, 3 assists and 3 aces. Pecarovich had 7 kills and 4 assists. Jordyn Higgins had 5 kill, 1 assist and 4 aces. Krogh had 1 kill, 27 assists and 1 ace. Bruner had 1 assist and 6 aces.
Prairie ends their season at third in District for the second straight season but this year without a chance to advance to State. Their final record is 21-11.
