Summit second at District, loses state play-in
The Summit Academy Lady Patriots pulled off a couple of upsets to take second at the District Tournament at Lewiston’s LCSC Activity Center but fell short of a State Tournament berth in a State Play-in Game.
On Wednesday, Oct. 18, they beat Nezperce 26-24, 25-23, 21-25, 17-25, 15-5 to eliminate the Indians and beat them for the first time after two losses during the season. On Thursday, Oct. 19, they repeated that feat against Kendrick, winning in a sweep 25-21, 25-17, 25-19 to claim second place at District. Finally on Saturday, Oct. 21 they faced Council in a play-in game at Grangeville and got swept 17-25, 8-25, 16-25.
Regardless, it’s still the best finish ever for a Summit volleyball team.
Vs. Nezperce
In the elimination match against Nezperce, a team they had lost to twice, winning just 1 game in the two matches, Summit came out and battled, winning two close-fought games to take a 2 sets to none lead in the match.
Nezperce came roaring back though to win the next two games and send the match to a fifth, and deciding game.
Lauren Stubbers and Taylor Lustig stepped up at the service line in the final game, delivering several aces to stake the Patriots to a 7-point advantage. When Summit is hitting their serves they are a much better team.
Vs. Kendrick
On Thursday night in the second place game, Summit faced 2nd seeded Kendrick who had swept them twice during the season, including just 9 days earlier on Summit’s senior night.Taylor Lustig and Erin Chmelik back away to let a Kendrick serve go long at District.
Kendrick started the first game like they were going to sweep again as they jumped out to a 1-5 lead after 4 straight aces. A Summit tie out broke the server’s rhythm and she served on into the net. Lustig then served Summit right back into the game with two aces and Erin Chmelik and Lauren Stubbers each adding a kill for a 6-5 lead.
Kendrick came back to retake the lead and held it, except for a couple of ties, until bricking a serve to tie the score at 16-16. 2 aces by Lauren Stubbers gave Summit the lead. They never trailed again although Kendrick was able to tie the score at 18, 19, and 21.
Lustig scored the tiebreaking sideout kill to make it 22-21 and Kayla Rehder then served out the game with 3 aces.
Kendrick again took the early lead in the second game and led by as many as 6 at 6-12.
A kill by Hailey Stubbers sent Rehder to the service line for 3 aces plus a kill by Lauren Stubbers that cut the lead to 11-12.
After a trade of sideouts, Summit finally took the lead on 2 aces by Lexi Currier at 14-13.
Kendrick tied the score at 14 and again at 15 but a serve into the net put Summit ahead and Lauren Stubbers all but clinched the game with a 6-point service run. She had 4 aces and Chmelik added 2 kills for a 22-15 before Stubbers served on just wide for a sideout.
Kendrick scored a point but Rehder scored a sideout kill and Lucy Osborne served out the game. Chmelik scored a kill to get to game point and Summit won it when Lucy’s dig of a Kendrick spike found the floor on the Kendrick side.
Summit flipped the script in the third game and took the early lead at 3-0 and 4-1.
Kendrick came back to tie it at 4 but a kill by Claira Osborne sent Lauren Stubbers to the service line for another 6-point service run. She had 3 aces while Claira added 2 more kills and Rehder had a kill as well for an 11-4 lead.
Kendrick never got closer than 3 points the rest of the way as Summit claimed a sweep and 2nd place at District.
For the match Courier had 8 kills, 9 assists and 4 aces. Chmelik had 8 kills, 1 assist and 1 ace. Claira Osborne had 6 kills 1 assist and 1 ace. Lucy Osborne had 3 kills and 10 assists. Lustig had 3 kills, 3 assists and 3 aces. Rehder had 3 kills 1 assist and 6 aces. Lauren Stubbers had 2 kills, 3 assists and 11 aces. Hailey Stubbers had 2 kills.
State Play-In vs. Council
After their best finish ever at the District Tournament, Summit had a chance to advance to their first ever State tournament but they ran into a superior Council team in the play-in match at Grangeville Saturday, Oct. 21, and lost in 3 games, 17-25, 8-25, 16-25.Lauren Stubbers looks to tip the ball past a Council defender in the state play-in match.
Council looked like they could’ve beaten any of the White Pine League Division 2 teams as they had a solid offense with outside hitter Chelsie Testa who could pound the ball as well as anyone Summit has seen all season and 5’11” middle Brittany Schon who was a force at the net and left-handed as well making it harder to defend her. Testa also had a very wicked serve which came in as hard as any of her spikes.
Summit fell behind in the opening game 0-4 and 1-7 but rallied back. Lauren Stubbers served an ace and Hailey Stubbers served two aces as Summit pulled within 1 at 7-8.
Council then answered back with 4 straight points and 12 of the next 16 points to take an 11-20 lead and went on to win by 8 points.
Council took a 0-7 lead to start the second game but Currier served Summit right back into it with 4 aces plus a kill by Lustig that made it 6-7.  Unfortunately that was it in the second game for the Patriots as they were unable to score anymore when serving while Council put together runs of 6 and 7 points to win going away.
Summit took their only lead of the match in the third game on a kill by Lauren Stubbers that made it 4-3. Council then scored the sideout and the next 2 points.
Summit was able to tie the game at 7 and again at 8 when Lauren Stubbers blocked a Council spike, but Council then took the lead for good, outscoring the Patriots 8-17 the rest of the way.
For the match Claira Osborne had 6 kills 1 assist and 1 ace. Chmelik had 4 kills, 1 assist and 1 ace. Lustig had 4 kills. Lauren Stubbers had 4 kills, including a block, 1 assist and 1 ace. Rehder had 3 kills and 1 ace. Hailey Stubbers had 2 kills, 4 assists and 3 aces. Currier had 1 kill, 7 assists and 4 aces. Lucy Osborne had 6 assists.
Summit’s season ends with a 12-14 record, which includes their match record at the Grangeville Tournament.
